I went to check something on our and um.... 💩!

These drives are spinning platters that have served us well for almost 41,000 hours of use, so I can't really blame them for having a hard time.

Can any of you hardware geeks tell me how worried I should be? This is a configured as a Synology Hybrid Raid https://kb.synology.com/en-br/DSM/tutorial/What_is_Synology_Hybrid_RAID_SHR

I guess i've got some research to do today
@dachary

EDIT: Replacement Drives ordered. Thanks for the feedback.

blackvoid,

@masukomi @Smingleigh As suggested backup the data and start replacing the drives one at a time. The risk of another failing drive during rebuild is high as the stress on the array is intensive. So having multiple drives flagged should be taken seriously.
SHR vs conventional raid is only that it allows a combination of disks that are not of the same capacity. Meaning it will utilize them better but in some cases that makes sense with more drives (number of disk and their size).

@blackvoid @Smingleigh thanks for the confirmation and clarification about SHR

basculement de #gitea vers #forgejo sous #docker, c’est assez simple. #synology
il suffit de changer dans votre docker-compose l’image de gitea pour forgejo.

The Asustor Drivestor 4-bay NAS devices are cheaper than Synology, but I have no idea how their software compares.

JeremiahFieldhaven,
@JeremiahFieldhaven@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Taffer FWIW, I've had a Synology DS420+ for nearly 4 years now, populated with 4 drives.

The initial cost was admittedly significant, not going to lie, but to date I've had (almost) no complaints about it.

The DSM software is decent, easy to maintain, and everything Just Works. Could I have made my own system for less? Absolutely. But for a very neatly presented, self-contained, reliable system it works very well.

Since I can't stop thinking about expanding my NAS (I've got a 2-bay NAS now, apparently my brain "needs" a 4+ bay NAS), so I'm looking into building one from parts vs just buying the 4-bay Synology.

Finding small cases with four drive bays is apparently hard; they've all got 1-2 bays and a huge amount of space for a massive GPU because only gamers buy them?

Hey, you know what? For around the cost of upgrading to a 4-bay NAS, I can just double the storage in my existing hardware. And I can just plug in the new drives (one at a time) and repair the volume.

Ok, so the one weird trick is to limit the amount of report to I dunno 10? Currently, I have 596 🤐

@chad I loved my Drobo. Such a shame what happened to them. I still have my 5D. It is a shame it doesn’t work just because of software.

@chad Not running the mini anymore? I still keep a couple around for the excellent low power performance :)

With ethernet dongles they run multipath iSCSI to the storage server most excellently.

@parigotmanchot Plus de bouton car plastique devenu cassant...Mais je ne désespère pas d'en faire quelque chose en bricolant un interrupteur et en le laissant en interne de toute façon car limité à DS4

parigotmanchot,
@parigotmanchot@mastodon.social avatar

Although I've been using linux and hosting websites on external servers for many years I'm a late comer to the home server network. Probably a good solution for storing and backup of images amongst many other things. My Synology NAS drive arrives in the next few days and I then can start "messing" :sablobsmilehappy: Any starter tips?

My journey started a month ago. I moved all my all my containers and VM from my NAS to a testing MiniPC with Proxmox.

This test was very positive, so I decided to move to a new server. I'm using a cluster to move my LXCs and VMs. I'm very impressed by how simple the process is for a newbie like me. I just need to remove my snapshots before.

Keep learning in my journey! 😊

Justin,

@ironicbadger @lucas3d totally, but I would argue that saying its hardware specific is kind of part of the whole unstable thing
