#Portland's new Deputy City Administrator of Public Works will start July 1, in transition to the new form of government adopted by the charter reform measure. Public Works will include Water, Environmental Services, and #Transportation bureaus (which will be run by a City Administrator rather than elected commissioners of our current system.) #pdxBikes

Let’s hope that whatever administration we end up with can quickly catch on about how PBOT’s current project delivery process was designed to build and maintain streets for cars. They’re failing to deliver on because they insist on everything being cast in concrete after years of “outreach” that never reaches actual users on the street. Changes on the street need to happen now, match the timeline where we're suffering through becoming

final day to provide feedback about the 82nd Ave Major Maintenance Project. ’s current plans do not include improvements to a majority of sidewalks or any accommodations for people riding along at all, no for the bus line with the highest ridership in ??

Pull it together PBOT, was supposed to fix ODOT's not just add flashing lights.

plenty of smooth asphalt wasted on cars, ridiculous 35mph posted speed, plenty of room for a bike lane but only yellow centerline paint on the street. Turning the corner, old concrete laview is very broken.

But at least some separation there... Why don't more people bike from to ? Could it be the way ODOT sits on this segment like a selfish old dragon, the way it does all of the deadly urban in our metro area?

Pavement being destroyed by speeding drivers, crumbling the foundation to sand before ODOT'll hand it over to local jurisdictions. Right lane is effectively bus-and-turn only, just paint it red some and let's go.

overly-wide lanes, free left turns everywhere and extra space reserved for cars in places where you can't even turn left, a "Bike on roadway" sign cowering off to the far side of the sidewalk at one point (no sidewalks at other points, of course.) I catch up to the driver who farted their cloud of car stink in my face, and they belatedly activate a turn signal.

I've long said that 's problem is that we let the cars decide how we build & maintain our transportation network. If everything is decided by manual + procedures with no single person being held accountable for these choices, the bureau runs itself primarily by corruption / whatever forces are incentivized to maintain the status-quo. The smart move as commissioner is to pull the handbrake, but who can see that in the 1st year

Of course PBOT is going to immediately launch operation "think about it for a while" after driverists cut down their signs they stuck in the street for telling cars what to do, not like they always send crews out ASAP removing any guerrilla devices that potentially obstruct cars (oh wait...) Department of Letting Cars Boss Us Around here needs a better acronym.

's "traffic calming" projects are such kid-gloves weaksauce that doesn't pretend to control the kinds of drivers who are actually making our streets feel unsafe.
