I'm having a hard time believing, not that a #transportation agency would come up with a plan that was to sweep the broken glass and gravel off of the sidewalks and leave it in the bike lanes for a few days before sweeping it up, just that it wasn't done with intentional malice or disdain toward people on bikes. (months after it snowed and they graveled everything while plowing the snow onto the sidewalks) #BarburBlvd#pdxBikes#Portland#BikeTooter#ClimateDenial#CarSupremacy#ODOTGTFOpdx
I am so tired of hearing about the "privilege & #ableism of the bike community" as an excuse for not investing in protected low-stress bike infrastructure. Those assholes buzzing you on a path (or when you're in the bike lane on streets with no sidewalks) are #drivers on bikes, not members of my bike community. I'm taking my kid to a doctor appt and #CarSupremacy is squatting on 130ft and 65ft swaths of asphalt while we share scraps of space with people walking their dogs. #BikeTooter
hundreds of millions of dollars of federal "investment" going to freeway overpasses and seven-lane car-centric intersections with painted bike lanes are not "reconnecting communities". You're just putting a veneer of modernity on the wall of cars that separates kids and other non-drivers from independence, keeping the vast majority of people enslaved to #motoNormativity. #ClimateDenial#transportation#carSupremacy#ODOTGTFOpdx#legalizeBikes
“For years, advocates have been sounding the alarm on the worsening epidemic of traffic violence in our community and proposing solutions which have been ignored by the City Council,” Sarah Iannarone, executive director of nonprofit The Street Trust, said in a press release. “Of course the problem continues to worsen.”
"...I want to note we’ve been here before,” Lauritzen continued. “We’ve been at somber events, we’ve been at memorials where we say the work is important…that loss of life is terrible. And yet, here we are again.” #CarSupremacy#CarsRuinCities
This decade of status quo prolongment brought to you by failed mayor ted wheeler, sitting on his hands exactly like his owners elected him to do.
@activetowns we need to rethink the notion that "better road designs and public transit will require significant up-front investment" and learn to see the 3-5 redundant overbuilt car streets that are available to serve any given trip vs the unbuilt bike/walk networks that are largely disconnected by the #carSupremacy of these 4-lane stroads. Network-wide quick-build bike connections and bus/turn-only the outside lanes of stroads by shifting operational funds to prioritize people, then iterate.
Here comes Byron's DGAF, stinking his way past two schools and over a hill to avoid some traffic signals on the way to make a U-turn and then fill a yard with fumes on the other side of the neighborhood. Shovels sticking out behind the foldaway mirror probably won't fold the same. Might need a #trafficEngineer to look at what traffic this Local Service Traffic Street is carrying. #BanCars#SafeRoutesToSchool
"a 10-year, citywide push to reduce traffic deaths" #VisionZero is not something that takes ten years. Either you adopted a policy to immediately prioritize people and tell cars to get bent, or you're just stalling and propping up #CarSupremacy while talking about "safety" or wishing for "safety funding" that won't reduce the number or speed of cars. The real solutions are cheap, concrete-filled steel bollards, planters, and similarly stern stuff for modal filters. https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/most-dangerous-intersections-data-18665443.php
Scene: a wasteland of fascist car supremacy, stroads, millions dead per year, many more maimed, most of the rest coerced into working for their car and sitting in traffic awaiting extinction
Bike Advocate: "we should consider policy that prioritizes bikes, somewhat"
People: "not everyone can ride a bike."
😒
If the only reason you can't ride a bike three miles is the car traffic, do you think the car infrastructure might be the problem, or should we just wait to find some perpetual motion and infinite geometric impossibility in a cereal box? #climateDenial#carSupremacy
Of course PBOT is going to immediately launch operation "think about it for a while" after driverists cut down their signs they stuck in the street for telling cars what to do, not like they always send crews out ASAP removing any guerrilla devices that potentially obstruct cars (oh wait...) Department of Letting Cars Boss Us Around here needs a better acronym. #Vision60or70something#PBOT#Portland#transportation#LowTrafficNeighborhoods#CarSupremacy#pdxBikes
Big slowclap.gif for the slow but steady sweeping up of what was all-hands-on-deck spreading gravel. What if those protected bike lanes were connected, wouldn't that help people who are trying to get somewhere but scared to ride in an unprotected lane? This whole event / scenario is a design failure, policy failure, failure of imagination, failure of elected officials to understand how cities work. #Portland#ClimateDenial#CarSupremacy#transportation
the mental gymnastics of #drivers faced with the notion of driving around the block sometimes to avoid extincting our species, is how they get their cardio
PBOT working overtime to clear five car lanes by piling the snow and cut wood in the bike lanes is peak #climateDenial#CarSupremacy just keep serving up half of GHG emissions #GlobalWarming and wonder why people won't get out of their cars. #pdxBikes#Portland#pdxtst
There is not a path to reduced #ClimateChange emissions and a sustainable #transportation system that allows our species to survive #GlobalWarming while maintaining #CarSupremacy with its glut of empty passing lanes and free #parking where all options to choose #eBikes or #transit have been cut off by walls of traffic (cars always either at a standstill or moving at deadly speeds, averaging 20mph.) Many people need to change their plans and stop driving, many car lanes need to be repurposed.
The tendency of #transportation agencies to focus on capital funding and grants is an artifact of the insane century of highway building which has brought us to the current state of #climateDisasters. Also their budgeting process is madness, and money is money. We're suffering so much debt to the costs of daily operating and maintaining a system of #carSupremacy, the lives lost to traffic crashes, emissions, all of this is due to priorities and operational issues, and money is money.
8% of streets cause the majority of fatal crashes but does anyone understand that making those streets safe requires getting people out of cars? #VisionZero needs #VMTreduction, not flashing lights.
#transportation utility fee as a replacement for the #gasTax is a terribly unpopular idea because we're tired of subsidizing #carSupremacy. Crank up the fucking gas tax until drivers are breaking even, and then ask me about creating a source of funding that will still work when you make people quit driving. 🙄 "Portland Bureau of cart befOre The horse", here. #PBOT#FuckCars
