After being abroad for 15+ years, I'm reaching that point when being out of place in my home country feels more manageable than being the eternal foreigner.
So TIL that people in #Australia sometimes respond to "Thank you" with "That's alright!" or a gentle "You're alright!".
At first I thought the thing I was thanking people for had actually been more burdensome than I'd anticipated (as if they were interpreting my "thank you" as more like a "sorry for inconveniencing you") and they were in turn reassuring me that the inconvenience was ok.
So anyway, my social anxiety has created language barriers #abroad in an English-speaking country 😅
