Since April is #AutismAwarenessMonth, I felt like I should amplify the fact that people with #Autism and #Autistic spectrum disorders almost unanimously feel that #AutismSpeaks is counterproductive in that it actively avoids allowing autistic representation, and focuses on suppressing autistic traits in general rather than trying to bolster coping skills and give autistic people wider acceptance in society.
It's the equivalent of an organization about people in wheelchairs, run entirely by people who are inconvenienced by them, pulling attention away from advocacy for ramps in order to find ways to make the wheelchairs less obtrusive, at the expense of the people in wheelchairs.
Please don't #lightitupblue as it supports the awful #autismspeaks that has always seen autism as a 'disease' to be 'cured' and among many, many other issues, in their current '100 Day Kit for Parents' they advise parents of recently diagnosed autistic children to 'grieve for the loss of their non-autistic child' as if we are changelings that killed the 'real' child and replaced them. Please #lightitupred or gold instead
Am I the only person to notice that CBS News showed an advertisement for Autism Speaks today, during national news at 4PM PT? I live in SF Bay Area, and I’m not sure if this was just from local KPIX. I do certainly plan to reach out and raise their attention to the harm this group causes.
I'm new to the party, but I've heard how terrible #AutismSpeaks is, but what are GOOD organizations or resources that are well-liked by #Autistic community? Do any exist? 😵💫
Good article about lack of accessibility in #threads. Except for one problem. Why is the reporter talking to User Way, a wweb overlay company whose marketing emphasizes avoiding lawsuits, as their source? Why not talk to blind #accessibility advocates?
By the way, User Way seems happy to amplify the fact that #AutismSpeaks uses their product for its website, which tells you everything you need to know about #UserWay and Autism Speaks. https://mashable.com/article/threads-accessibility-twitter-alternatives
I think that the #adhd symbol is fairly new but the symbol for #asd/#autism had changed from a puzzle piece (which autistic people themselves hated because it was most associated with #autismspeaks which is a company who thinks they can "cure" autism and other neurodiversities, so o guess we took it upon ourselves to find our own symbol
To be clear: I'm very happy that #StephenStills and #NeilYoung
played together last night, and that the great James Raymond, #DavidCrosby's son and chief collaborator for 30 years, was included. I'm not a fan of #AutismSpeaks - my book #NeuroTribes can tell you why. This was not an event for Croz, but a benefit. But I'm hoping that any future tribute events to
Croz also include his bandmates from the #Lighthouse and #SkyTrails Bands. I'll be there. #music#autism
