The funny thing about Malaysians is that we are so used to thinking our country sucks that when folks say otherwise we think they have an ulterior motive and are trying to butter us up 😆
I've lived a couple of years abroad and have travelled extensively. I have come to realise every country has its problems. We in Malaysia, for one, take for granted our relative peace from conflict and natural disasters.
Good morning from me and my Payless Pancit Canton Calamansi!!! Added wansoy, shiitake mushrooms sauteed in sesame oil, hard boiled egg, crunchy garlic, and fried shallots.
#MakanApaToday A little experiment: Penang Kopi-O but Kori Kohi style! The coffee drip bag contains beans, sugar, butter, and salt. Made into large ice cubes overnight then slowly melted in a mixture of milk, sugar, and water. #TootSEA#ExpatAsia
Stir-Fried Scallops with Thai Chili Paste. My absolute favorite from Smile Elephant, a small restaurant in Kapitolyo. Best paired with Crabmeat Fried Rice!
#MakanApaToday at INT.Bar / EXT.Cafe in Cubao Ex: The Prestige. ☕
Contains espresso, demerara syrup, angostura bitters, orange bitters, and egg white. Served iced. An excellent blend and a perfect start to any Cubao Ex visit.
Decided to try dishes from cuisines not very accessible in Manila, namely from #LaoPDR and #Myanmar.
Left: Ping Gai (grilled chicken), Tam Mak Hoong (papaya salad), and sticky rice. Unlike the Thai version, the Lao PDR version has no peanuts.
Right: Myanmar's Mohinga, a very satisfying rice noodle in fish soup dish. Contains shallots, lemongrass, chickpea flour, garlic, ginger, banana stems, and boiled eggs. (I need to learn how to make this!!!)
Couldn't decide on dessert at the venue (and it was pretty crowded) so we ventured over to ChaTraMue for iced Thai tea. This is the first ChaTraMue branch in Manila!
The Meet Me at the Manila Carnival series is finished! This final episode is about the end an Era, 1927-1939, the final years of the pageant before the outbreak of WW2.
Episode Recap 6 | The Trung Sisters and the Vietnamese Rebellion of 39 AD
Excerpt below! 👇🏽
The Trung Sisters, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, were heroines of the first Vietnamese independence movement. They headed a rebellion against Chinese Han dynasty overlords and briefly established an autonomous state.
[Side note: Crazy how different the audio on old episodes sound! Happy to report we've come a long way since.]
ATTN #MakanApaToday if you're in Manila, the annual #ASEAN Food Festival (AFF) is going to be at Music Hall, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City, on Sunday (08/06).
Open from 10 AM to 6 PM, entrance is free. Let's go get that tempe!
I love this Thai coffee mix because in addition to roasted coffee and sugar, it has roasted corn, soya bean, margarine, and salt. I add condensed milk too. Perks me right up and I need this because I'm recording today. This mix is available on Shopee at around 160/kilo and I've seen it in stores in Manila at Chatramue MOA and Trinoma.
#MakanApaToday durian! I mistakenly thought dad didn't have enough so I bought some more and now we have a "durian runtuh" situation 🤣
My family likes to eat durian with rice soaked in santan (coconut milk). I have failed my Peranakan heritage by hating the idea of rice + santan, insists my mum.
It's OK, I am a purist - I prefer my durian untouched by anything but my hands 🤭
Throwback #MakanApaToday because it's very stormy and can't get out much. This was our first meal in Penang: Lontong ( #Malaysia ) and Chicken Shapale with Yak Yak fries (Tibet). The nice Tibetan gentleman who owned the stall said he worked with Filipinos in Greece so he knew a couple of words (Kumusta Ka!)
