Old oil wells are burping up toxic brine.

"In the oil fields north of Fort Stockton, #Texas, a large leak discovered at the beginning of December has joined a growing list of aging oil and gas wells in the area that have sat quietly for decades only to reawaken and spew toxic water."

“The worst thing about this one is that it’s toxic [and] radioactive #ProducedWater that is going into the #groundwater,” said Burch."

"“” is water that returns to the surface as wastewater during oil and gas production.
The water typically contains hydrocarbons from the deposit as well as naturally occurring toxic substances like arsenic and , salts and chemical additives injected into the well to facilitate extraction. These additives include and numerous other toxic substances that have the potential to harm human health and contaminate the environment."
