The Konmari tidying method breaks the initial discard into phases by categories: clothes, books, papers, misc, and sentimental items. I wonder what the categories are for a home workshop because it can't all be misc. #konmari#shopLife
I see many randomized scenarios while working in a college machine shop. It looks like this will be my last quarter helping out as there is a changing of the guard on the way. Only 14 more classes and then that'll be the end of a fun three years with that shop and crew. #shopLife
Groggy morning thought: I'm confused when people ask me why I work every day and don't rest. The workshop is where I rest. It's all the other parts of life that feel like work. #artist#shopLife
The realization that I could heat my shop like a chump 🐵 or I could make every machine tool do useful work and enjoy the "free" waste heat. 😎 #shopLife
Ok, here's where my head is on the topic of an open vlogger's camera. I've designed a shell that will fit a variety of SBCs, sensor & lens combos, custom input systems, power sources, and rear display panels. The FreeCAD source file is to a large extent parametrically driven so that the shell can be rearranged for different dimensions without too much fuss. The idea is to take care of the fiddly camera bits and make it easily hackable for personal preferences. #mdc#openHardware#FreeCAD
Apparently, Overture TPU and the X1C nicely play together which is sweet because I'm tired of the gaps in my camera where the rubbery nubbies should be.
I ordered a few kinds of buttons to find the most satisfyingly clicky clicks to fit under the TPU covers. Also, a 5 position rotary switch is on its way to become the mode chooser: photo, video, review, livestream, upload (I think). I already have a little five-way momentary switch (l, r, u, d, click) for menu nav. #mdc#3DPrinting#shopLife
Is there already project to build a quality open licensed camera like a Sony EV-Z10 (pictured) which I think of as, for lack of a better term, a "VLOGging camera"?
❓
I know about projects like the CinePi (https://github.com/schoolpost/CinePI) and of a variety of unusual and cool shaped cameras (e.g. https://github.com/alekthegenius/Raspberry-Pi-Digital-Camera).
🙅
I've seen a few very basic RPi camera cases but I've found no advanced project to make something in the vein of Sony's, APS-C sensor, emount, flip-around touch display cameras.
In conversation with other machine designing folks I've discovered that most of us pick two or three sizes of bolts and stick with them. I use M3 for ~all of my miniatures and M6 for larger projects around the shop.
What do you do? #shopLife
These days I don't often get the chance to explore the guts of random machine tools but this video brought back the specific mix of excitement, respect for elders, fear of fucking up in an expensive way, and the joy of grokking the system. #machining#shopLife https://youtu.be/Iy1DOUKsBRc
When the world news is too much I'm deeply grateful for a few hours at my workbench. I hope that you have a bench and that something calming is on it. #shopLife
Because why spend 30 minutes soldering when you can spend six months building a machine to spend five minutes soldering? So say we all. #shopLife https://youtu.be/rfSAW3zDQ7M
On first impression I like this approach of reusing 3mm cardboard from shipping boxes to make the walls of #FreeGrid modules. The bases print in almost half the time of printed-wall equivalents and the cardboard is easier to change out when modules need to be modified. Gaffer tape seems fine but for modules I suspect will be long lived a more durable tape and adhesive could make sense. #shopLife
I use scissors to cut parts from aluminum cans for projects around the shop and occasionally as shim stock but check out this slick method for removing the top and bottom to create uniform stock: #shopLife https://youtu.be/SCGeuM4de7M?si=k9a0K6aUNiqJOxEo&t=490
Here's my new drill press. It's a Taiwanese (I think) import sold under the brands Mark 1 and Cummins. It has new belts, nearly flawless original paint, and all of the machined surfaces look new or lightly used. I have a more powerful motor collecting dust so I may eventually upgrade for more low speed torque. It was $100 which is less than the cost of a steel rod the size of the main shaft. #shopLife#machining
For the past couple of weeks I've dropped off from posting daily shop videos and I think it was a good decision for both my mental health and because I was working on projects that a) I couldn't share or b) were even more boring than usual. But, I miss making them and I'm back to working on non-secrets so perhaps tomorrow I'll get back into the swing. Who knows, maybe I'll even shoot and edit a video longer than one minute! #shopLife#peertube#youtube
What do y'all use for labeling bins and such in the shop? For years I've written on gaffers' tape with a white paint pen but now I'm looking for something that doesn't depend on my handwriting but is more lovely than the usual little label printers' tapes. #shopLife
I hope this new wave of switchers has a lot of #machining and #shopLife people. Come for the lack of centralization, stay for the chitchat about #cad, #feedsAndSpeeds, and whether left-handed threads are the work of the deep state. 😹
Wasted an hour figuring out that the reason my resin printer would only read from the USB drive that came with it was because the printer firmware requires the drive to have a MBR, use an old version of FAT, and only contain 8.3 length file names. Apparently, my printer lives in 1992. #3dPrinting#shopLife
I wonder how many times I'll run machine grease through my hair before I kick the habit of running my fingers through my hair while thinking. #ShopLife
