As Nicole Vögele gears up to show her latest film at the Visions du Réel festival in April, here is my review of one of her previous films. Set in Taiwan, mostly at night, intimate.

Post from Manila! My book review of "Sine ni Lav Diaz: A Long Take on the Filipino Auteur", edited by Parichay Patra and Michael Kho Lim, has been published and I'm super chuffed to see that my writing has made it to the Philippines as well 🙂

I love this unauthorized of the system, featuring beautiful golden-hour footage from a surreptitiously-attached GoPro on the front of the train, which hitched a ride from SFO to Pittsburg.

The documentary features voices from interesting people from BART’s past and present. I learned a lot about how the system came about, and how it’s run.

The ride is accompanied by the lovely, analog synth-heavy soundtrack of the game Manifold Garden, which invokes an ethereal, futuristic, Blade Runner esthetic as you glide in the first person through tunnels, bridges, and open air, always following the silver tracks ahead.

Kudos to Vincent Woo for this movie. It’s breathtaking. Watch it on your 4K TV.

I'm saying goodbye to regular blogging on Slow Cinema. Why? I tried to explain it on my blog.

“The pain doesn’t make you want to live. How many lives I have? Nine!”

Wang Bing's "Til madness do us part" (2013) is an exceptional document on China's mental asylums, and the sometimes arbitrary reasons for people's detention. It's not an easy watch but essential.

A new Apichatpong Weerasethakul! Albeit only a short film...

"There are demonstrations in Bangkok but the insects on the white bed linen have other concerns, if they have any at all. In his short film hovering on the border between dream and wakefulness Apichatpong Weerasethakul again blends familiar banality with the realm of the dead."
