If you have the smoke alarm sensor, it may be worth updating it to the latest firmware.

I had an issue where it would go offline every now and then. Discovered they have a new version of the firmware that may address this issue.

Its always good to review the firmware updates every now and then on devices.

TYIL - This year I learned in that…

"I'll fix this little bug before moving onto the things I should be doing"

The bug is because of some bizarre standards compliance change that didn't list the issue as a breaking change and all chatter claims it is benign yet it has actually broken and entire category of shit

WHELP. Tech that was stable for 7 years just broke for some reason, cool, cool. Thanks and

Hey folks, what do we like for a temp/humidity sensor?

Use case: I’m going to sprinkle them around the rooms in my house.

Requirements: , , is preferred. Open to as well. Would prefer something that’s accurate or is able to be calibrated/adjusted.

I see the one is $13 US and that seems super cheap… not in a good way. Is the thing a piece of junk?

Given that we've seen three companies in just the last couple of weeks enshittify their device or API offerings (Hue requiring a cloud account, Chamberlain disabling API access, Mazda sending a cease and desist to the Mazda developer), I've created a GitHub repository to track problem devices & APIs.

I think it'll be good to have a central location to point new users to with a list of stuff not to get.

PRs welcome.

This is one of the reasons why I like Zigbee and Z-Wave over Matter and WiFi. These technologies are designed for fully local functioning of smart devices.

I am a bit afraid of Matter, which makes smart devices to be part of the IPv6 network.

Will manufacturers require cloud registration to activate a device, or to enable Matter support in the product?

Or even, will manufacturers start pushing for internet access enabled Matter networks?

Did just lose z-wave connectivity after the latest update for anyone else or just me? I suddenly lost like a hundred devices all at once. I feel like Obi Wan when that planet blew up. Great disturbance in the force over here.

Anyone know if there's a smart lock/dead bolt sensor that DOES NOT allow you unlock remotely but tells you if the deadbolt is unlocked (and ideally able to only lock it)?

Used the day of #hilary to work on random things.

Work laptop is chugging along updating #gentoo packages, almost bricked my #zwave dongle with a borked upgrade via #homeassistant , caught up on online orders I needed to make, did many loads of laundry, and had a great breakfast that Melissa made.

This #tropicalstorm was productive!

Just completed - not installing - but actually adding the combo /CO2 detector (yes, @TechConnectify: Photocell) to my Z-Wave controller, instead of just relying on the sound of it to alert me.

Now they all text me & my husband if there's a fire - in case we're out of the house.

We have a dog. This way we can call a neighbor to get my pup out of the house should the need arise.

Don't know why I didn't do this before. Thanks for cajoling me to test, @TechConnectify! ❤️

Hey folks what do we like for smart plugs these days?

Preference would be something with or compatibility with . Otherwise, main requirement would be ability to monitor power.

I also have good and networks though if theres something you really like with those protocols.
