@Tengrain @Karoli I was anti Trump long before 2016 due to his reprehensible business practices. Every thing I read only makes me more firmly in the “any blue will do” camp. As long as the GOP treats him like a cult leader I won’t even consider any candidate willing to identify with the party.

This is incredibly cool - https://newatlas.com/medical/gut-bacteria-enzyme-universal-donor-blood/

If this works, there will be less wasted blood at the blood bank, and it'll be easier to give transfusions to people with rare blood types.

I would much rather get a "no results" when I'm looking for medical interactions than an helpfully telling me "Here's some bullshit you don't know enough to know is horribly wrong"

Even something as innocent as acetaminophen can destroy your liver if you overdose on it.

Have you ever tried to measure a cat with a tape measure? It will make you question the solidity of dimensional space.

Pica, small cat
Height: 22 to 47cm
Girth: 33 to ??cm (ouch cm)
Length: 37cm
Length w/ tail: 66cm
Weight: 5.9 pounds/ 2.7 Kg
Max Length (Dangle): 74cm! oh no

she's getting longer.

Rate of Enlonganmentation
dML/dt: 1.2cm / second

No signs of increase stopping. Cat keeps increasing.
All clear! ALL CLEAR!
Soon she will be in all locations.

This was a bad project idea.

Is there a project or something so I can give all my local servers working certificates that don't freak out my browser without exposing everything to the internet AND WITHOUT HAVING TO GET CISCO CERTIFIED or whatever?

servers:

  • Home Assistant
  • Ubiquiti router accessed via its .local domain
  • Synology NAS

Each of these is on distinct hardware and while each has their own solutions with varying flexibility, I'd like something generalizable to all based on my "no internet exposure" need

unixorn,
@unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo have a look at nginx-proxy-manager. I use it with a domain hosted by Route 53 and it makes using LetsEncrypt certificates pretty painless.

Reminds me of a place I worked at years ago where they made us all watch an online training session on application security.

Where you had to turn on Flash to watch it.

The good secop and I had a laugh when I told him anyone who finishes the course should get an automatic failure for turning on flash - this was while Flash was circling really close to the drain and it was well known actionscript was just a wrapper to load CVEs.

My setup: version is 2023.12.3 running in a docker container.. I have a brand new m5 atom echo that I flashed using https://esphome.io/projects/

Flashing was successful, I can see the device on my network and ping it, but when I try to add it to HA, I get the error Can't connect to ESP. Please make sure your YAML file contains an 'api:' line.

2/N

When I flashed it, I didn't see where I could either set the api key or copy it if the site generated one randomly - I'm clearly missing something basic.

It doesn't matter whether I click "Add to Home Assistant" from the esphome.io/projects results after flashing, or try to manually add a new ESPHome integration for it.

unixorn,
@unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

@homeassistant @esphome

Either way I try add the echo, HA pops up the dialog with host & port, and it doesn't matter whether I use the m5stack-atom-echo-XYZZYN.local mdns address (which I can ping) or the raw IP address, I still see the same error.

@unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

@motoridersd @homeassistant @esphome @brad

I'm going to try reflashing from the yaml file Jorge linked after adding api and ota keys.

I'll update later whether or not that works.

It probably won't help keep things easy that I'm running ESPHome as a standalone docker container instead of as an addon.

While writing a script, I arrived at a point where I was using variables and trying to do math.

It was at this point that I stopped using BASH and began rethinking my life choices.

It was also at that time where I began using python, even though when I started I was thinking, “I just need a couple of shell commands!”

unixorn,
@unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

@DigitalKrampus

My rule of thumb about scripts is that once it hits ~100-150 lines, I start needing to use arrays or dictionaries, or start declaring local variables, it's time to rewrite in a better language like .

Rewriting 150 lines of shell is at most a day. If you let too many "Just one more line/function" PRs sneak by, suddenly you have a >1k line bash script and rewriting it turns into a multiday ordeal.

Reminder - I created https://github.com/unixorn/internet-of-trash as a list of things that don't work well, have had the vendor try to force you to use the cloud for something that was locally controlled, or are otherwise a pain to use with home automation.

If something is supposedly for but is a pain to use with home automation, please add it to the list.

The goal is to have a warning list of products to avoid, especially for people new to or .

Given that we've seen three companies in just the last couple of weeks enshittify their device or API offerings (Hue requiring a cloud account, Chamberlain disabling API access, Mazda sending a cease and desist to the Mazda developer), I've created a GitHub repository to track problem devices & APIs.

I think it'll be good to have a central location to point new users to with a list of stuff not to get.

PRs welcome.
