What is your absolute favorite
open source app? ✨

I know it's hard friends,
but you can only name ONE.

Go! 👇👀

michaelharley,

@Em0nM4stodon Firefox/Thunderbird. I install them on every computer.

michaelharley, to Shelly

I've been singing the praises of as a company as I've had good luck with some of the Shelly Plus 2 PM relays, but I've not had such good luck with their smart plugs. I have two plugs stuck in some weird state.

They're showing as unavailable in . During that troubleshooting, I realized they had updated their app.

Ok, no problem. I'll get the new one, but I couldn't log into the new app with the old credentials.

Ok, I'll create a new account on the new platform, but now I can't import my devices as they say they're associated with another account.

Well, that sucks, but fine, let's just reset the devices to factory. But even after they're still associated with the other account... I presume on Shelly Cloud or whatever they call their dumb thing.

I've mentioned a few times here how I have struggled with ESPHome devices because I don't think I'm quite managing things correctly. At least ESP Home is 100% fully local—no 3rd party app is required. No account. My devices don't get registered with the mothership.

All that to say, I'm going to take a closer look at plugs for smart plugs, and probably relays for relay applications.

michaelharley,

@jan how do you join devices to your wifi network? Admittedly, I didn't look very hard but I don't see a way to bypass the sign-in screen of the app.

I'm struggling with and my lights. I've got some buttons to set specific light levels and a toggle for on/off.
When toggling the light off, it dimms down, then turns off - just like I want it. But when toggling it back on, it's on the lowest dimm setting, as it was just before turning off.
That makes sense from a technical point, but I don't get how to store/retrieve the intended light levels when I hit the buttons.

Any hints what I'm missing here?

michaelharley,

@AngryAnt @tokudan the built in way is to use scene.create service call. It allows you to snapshot an entity's state.

Why do websites use this pattern? Why not have account and password on the same page? Often my phone does not recognize that my password manager should supply the username (email) part of my credentials. Is there some security best practice at work here?

I use masked email addresses so it’s a few extra steps to manually get it.

It's surprising to me that doesn't allow for the use of hardware keys to secure my Unifi account.

Hey everyone. We went on a cruise during Thanksgiving with a couple of our friends. I wrote up a trip journal and included a few photos. If that's your jam, check it out.

I'm transferring my domains from hover to porkbun mostly because hover doesn't allow me to use my hardware keys as a second factor.

I can't find if porkbun has a mastodon account so that's kind of a bummer.

Hey folx, are there any table of content plug ins you're using or have read about? I'd like to use a shortcode to create a list of headings in my post. Thank you please.

Hey folks, what do we like for a temp/humidity sensor?

Use case: I’m going to sprinkle them around the rooms in my house.

Requirements: , , is preferred. Open to as well. Would prefer something that’s accurate or is able to be calibrated/adjusted.

I see the one is $13 US and that seems super cheap… not in a good way. Is the thing a piece of junk?

I hate this trend I see where "AI" is being used where "computer software" or "computer algorithm" was once used.

I feel AI is a marketing term and most people give the term too much credit.

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 ().

The new manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube .

is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to (@mozilla) and/or (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

EDIT for clarification: MV3 in Chrome will still allow some ad blocking extensions, but will severely limit their blocking ability and even restricts pre-set filters to 50 MAX.

michaelharley,

@catsalad idk how anyone can use tor as a daily driver. It’s so slowww

I haven't been able to fall asleep since 4 a.m. because I can't stop thinking about that three weeks ago someone said something mysogynistic to me and I wasn't able to defend myself. Why is it so important to put people into imaginative boxes and then hurt them because of those imaginations?! I wish I could said this three weeks ago but once again I turned into stone and even pretended this persons statement was funny.

michaelharley,

@Carex :( I'm sorry this happened. Next time this happens you'll be ready though.

michaelharley,

@Carex if nothing else, you've done all this processing so the next time won't be as... surprising or shocking I guess. Plus you may have a witty retort!

Still, I get it. One of my past times seems to be replaying mortifying moments in my life over and over while experiencing those same awful feelings. 😑

Hey folx, what smart buttons do we like? I have handful of Hue smart buttons connected straight to HA but I need a few more. Would like to avoid Hue but the form factor and functionality is pretty nice.

I see people recommending (#GenreOfTheWeek) #DoomMetal so I wanted to recommend some stuff I've been digging lately. I first stumbled across this genre as #StonerMetal. I then discovered that #SludgeMetal and #DoomMetal were either synonyms or kissing cousins.

Please enjoy Destination Ceres Station: Reefersleep by Trillion Ton Beryllium Ships. I hope it hits you right in the nipples like it does me.

michaelharley,

This might actually be my #1 favorite #DoomMetal / #StonerMetal / #SludgeMetal song/band. When I think of the genre, this riff plays in my head. I've seen this band 4 times and I have lots of nostalgic memories that bubble up when this song comes on. Exit/In in Nashville TN. Amanda the stoner chick I was seeing during this time. The smell of marijuana. A hot sweaty circle pit. Good times.

The Internet is at a point where I trust the geocities-ass page that looks like a child made it more than any slickly produced modern web experience.

I crave your shitty blogs. Give me your UNDER CONSTRUCTION gifs.

So, Patreon made some changes this month that changed the location of a checkbox to charge patrons to a harder-to-find place, and ALSO made it impossible to see if a post is paid for in the browser. Thanks to that, patrons weren't charged for 2 of my 8 videos in October.

michaelharley,

Hey folks, what are some legit, good alternatives to Patreon?

Grrrr. My #HomeAssistant is taking over 30 minutes to upgrade from 2023.10.3 to 2023.10.5.

Is that normal?

Admittedly, it's running on an ancient Raspberry Pi 2. Should I be upgrading to something better - or is the process always this slow?

If you have personal experience with modern Home Assistant devices, feel free to recommend one to me.

michaelharley,

@Edent what about home assistant green? I’m currently running directly on an intel nuc directly but am really interested in ha green.

The bowser situation on iOS makes me so irritated. Apple doesn’t allow users to add custom search engines. You can change it but only from the approved list.

If I try to use a non-safari browser, there’s no way to use ad blockers so the web browser experience is much poorer.

Shit like this is what makes me want to ditch Apple and never look back.

What's the latest thinking on installing software on ? Should I use and connect directly to repositories? I'm using and their "Pop! Shop" uses flatpak. Personally, I think I prefer using their flatpak thing but am I missing a benefit from using apt?

michaelharley,

@mmstick Thanks for the explainer! I'm really just trying to understand if I can default to using the pop shop to install the software I want or if there's any benefit to using apt for installing software when flatpak is available.

michaelharley,

@mmstick are there any advantages to using apt install vs installing with flatpak? Or vice versa? *Assuming a package is available via either method
