I hit an amazing milestone today.

Stained Glass Woman now has two thousand subscribers--all free, of course, because SGW is free forever! Two thousand of you are so interested in my little essays that you sign up to have them delivered to your inboxes.

Wow. I'm speechless.

Thank you all so much.

Also available in RSS! (idk if it tracks RSS subscriptions)

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I'm getting tired just thinking about the testing path you would need to follow in order to fork mastodon and keep it as an in-place upgrade from baseline.

  1. stand up a baseline mastodon instance
  2. federate with some peers
  3. fill it with realistic data
  4. migrate to the fork
  5. test the fork
  6. test federation
  7. repeat across several combinations of mastodon base versions and other fedi servers
  8. rapidly, during development
rachel,

@jenniferplusplus Just how bad is the tech debt situation on mastodon vs the alternatives? 😬

Taps mic

There's no such thing as cosmetic surgery. The phrase is BS rhetoric.

Boob jobs, butt lifts, lipo, hair transplants--they should all be fully covered by insurance, for cis people as well as trans, and they should be covered to save costs.

Let me show you the math.

rachel,

@Impossible_PhD honestly kinda mind blowing that they don't cover laser hair removal more widely.

(or hair transplants 😭)

It's been six months since I wrote my FFS article that shows off my restored hairline. So, on a lark, I pulled my hair back to take another selfie.

Yeah, I need to dye my roots, but goddamn if it still isn't coming in, creeping to greater density up front. It's not a lot, but it's there.

rachel,

@Impossible_PhD @JoscelynTransient the wait to see what results I can get are killing me 😭

people running single user instances: anything i should know before going into masto.host? assume i only know enough about computers to get myself in trouble

rachel,

@lampsofgold @NoraReed the opening post on original server is a pretty common thing

Smaller instance means you can be more likely to miss replies by people you're not following

This leads to some pretty fedi flavored issues

Trying to get in to a routine with the new Apple Watch.

For years I have used a Powerwatch which does not need charging, well, maybe a couple of times a year in the Winter. It uses solar and thermal, which is great.

The Apple watch lasts 3 days, but what I need to do is get in to a habit of charging at some point every day.

Not while sleeping, as use to track sleep.

But also not every 3 days, as no way to make that a "routine".

My current plan is "when I poor a whisky" 🙂

rachel,

@tripplehelix @revk some of the garmin watches have super long battery life, mine can go multiple weeks between charges if I'm not using the GPS heavily

can still get notifications, pay with it etc

I spent way too much time today beating my head against ain unfamiliar cloud "problem" only to find the issue was a typo that had propagated. :neofox_flop:

Important bird update: There is a second nest on the porch. We are making plans to setup a camera for this one as well :3

rachel,

Meanwhile the work continues

If I had better motivation I'd try and get a timelapse of this........

i understand the arguments for light themes but jesus fuck they hurt my eyes

rachel,

@eris honestly for some things they are ok, especially when they might be mixed with things that don't handle dark mode well

But things that switch back and forth are the worst for sure

Do I want to go to the hardware store for the 4th weekend in a row????

rachel,

@wyri ended up getting some stuff to finish off some quick mini projects

Also one hardware store had a grill demo with samples. Smoked nuts were honestly kinda confusing, not my favorite nut mix tbh.

For each XZ backdoor that gets found.... how many are out there silently undetected, either in progress or completed and sitting dormant....or actively exploited?

How long till compliance people to require a new flavor of the month security scan for every sub dependency down the entire tree? But also what is the alternative? Bonus points if that team has lost touch with actual development, or thinks that somehow "closed source" isn't often just the same open source with just a proprietary icing on top.

I've said it before, but goodness I can't wait for this "AI" bubble to burst. We are quite overdue for another AI winter.

rachel,

@xgranade the overall quality of most of the Gen-AI things are quite low and are dangerous if the user isn't already experienced.

Thing is..... Every so often I see what major websites look like these days without an ad blocker on. It really does not feel like quality is a concern at all. Capitalists hype-men are forcing the cost low as well...

i think i should just give up on lacp for now

rachel,

@astrid what OS are you running?

I actually liked LACP because I could mess with wiring without downtime, since the link could work with multiple connections down

I got the mostly-salvaged-river-parts e-bike, aka E-xpand-o-bike, into enough shape this afternoon to take it on a ride around the block.

I still need to fabricate a mount for the battery and the controller and do all the cable routing, but it works!

And it looks peak mad scientist on meth right now, so I had to show a picture to the Fediverse.

rachel,

@MLE_online

I love it

Pretty sure a bomb squad would be called if I parked a bike looking like that at work 😅

Y'all, if I posted this kind of shit about cops, y'all wouldn't come up into my mentions honking about good cops or queer cops or trans cops or whatever.

Landlords are the same, and I need everyone to get that.

rachel,

@salad_bar_breath by arguing that "owning housing is a good investment" landlords are actually functioning as housing cops

As long as "property ownership is an investment and it should also go up in value faster than inflation" housing will be scarce and people will be incentivized to hoard it.

rachel,

@salad_bar_breath oh yeah also one of the biggest transfers of intergenerational wealth is housing. And guess what has historically (and still ongoing in various forms) been a huge factor in housing ownership and thus intergenerational wealth in the US???

.... Racism, because of course. From black soldiers not getting GI bills, to red-lining and more. The effects accumulate across generations.

And landlords feed off this shit.

Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.

rachel,

@pluralistic recently I went to a Dr apt, I was kinda in a hurry so I said the address via voice and went with it.

I ended up at a farm barn outside of town. There is nothing obvious to indicate why it happened, no common street or town names. The Dr office notes it is a common occurrence.
