Die geringere Unfallbeteiligung dürfte unter anderem daran liegen, dass ältere Menschen nicht mehr regelmäßig zur Arbeit fahren und somit seltener als jüngere am Straßenverkehr teilnehmen. Bei Destatis arbeiten deutlich kompetentere Statistiker als ich (nicht Statistiker), aber der Schluss von "alte Menschen sind im Vergleich zu ihrem Anteil an der Gesamtbevölkerung weniger in Verkehrsunfälle verwickelt" und "Alte Leute fahren sicherer" ist doch groß. Erstens das offensichtliche Problem, das def Abschnitt selbst aufgreift. Wer weniger teilnimmt hat weniger Chancen Mist zu machen. Das sagt aber noch nichts darüber aus, wie denn die Verkehrsteilnahme aussieht, wenn teilgenommen wird.
Ein weiteres Problem könnte z.B. die Bevölkerungsverteilung verglichen mit der Unfallswahrscheinlichkeit in bestimmten Orten sein. Der Teil ist jetzt reine Projektion, aber: sagen wir ältere Leute wohnen eher in ländlichen Gebieten, und dass in ländlichen Gebieten weniger Unfälle passieren, weils halt weniger Mist zu machen gibt. Sofort ist offensichtlich, dass ältere Leute nicht notwendigerweise besser fahren, sondern durch ihre Umstände geschützt werden. Eine tickende Zeitbombe, falls dann mal ein Ausflug in die Stadt unternommen wird.
Tl;dr: traue keiner Statistik, die du nicht selbst ausgelegt hast.
