poking around at GNOME OS via Boxes,

this isn't like a huge, groundbreaking new thing, but, this System Details dialog here? probably really helpful if you want to help someone with troubleshooting, or for having consistent info for issue reports

no need to tell someone what all info to grab from the About page of GNOME Settings, or have them run some terminal command, or fuss with sending a screenshot

just "click Copy on the dialog and past it here"

making the setup process even easier with a script: https://github.com/zelikos/davincibox/pull/1

Ran into an issue with the container working in Toolbox on my system, so the script only supports distrobox at the moment

but it only takes a minute or two and you should have DaVinci Resolve ready to go

A run of a script named setup.sh in a terminal window. The script sets up DaVinci Resolve in a distrobox container. At the end, DaVinci Resolve is launched from a newly-created launcher from GNOME's activities overview.

revisiting another old one, and...yeah, Star Fox Adventures has not aged as well as Mario Sunshine. lots of jank with how it controls

it also happened to be the first Star Fox game I played...while also being the most different in gameplay from the rest of the series since it originally wasn't even developed as a Star Fox game

a follow-up from my last DaVinci Resolve post a few months back (https://mastodon.online/@Akzel/110289784791639584)

I've set up a "davincibox" repository to build a container with the needed packages for installing and running Resolve on an image-based distro (i.e. Silverblue, Kinoite, etc) from distrobox (or toolbox).

https://github.com/zelikos/davincibox

Note that I'm using an AMD GPU, so I can't test if the Nvidia stuff works right.

Still WIP and in need of polish, but functional

revisiting a classic tonight

the camera controls being inverted is really weird to get used to again, though

it also made me realize why younger me preferred inverted controls in other games for a long while: Sunshine was one of my most-played games as a kid, so inverted felt normal

honestly i'm not even surprised

fired up Horizon Zero Dawn for testing DualSense things; it's recognized as a DualShock 4 by the game, and I had to use Steam Input to enable gyro (but it does work just fine)

but anyway other than that, last time I played it, my setup couldn't really maintain 60 fps all that well. fast-forward 7 months and now it smooth as butter. AMD drivers really do be aging like fine wine

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

also I have no idea why MangoHud is saying the game was running at 2548x1409 there...I loaded the game up again and it's at a normal 2560x1440 now

semi-related to the poll I just posted, but I picked up an Xbox 360 controller I had lying around just to get a feel for it vs my DualSense and Switch Pro controllers, and...it has not aged very well

face buttons and start/select buttons are good, sticks are fine, but not great. triggers would probably feel a lot better if they weren't so narrow

d-pad and bumpers are really mushy though

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

i'd be tempted to get an Xbox Series controller some day for comparison, but I already know I probably wouldn't like it much since Xbox is the one major controller brand that still doesn't implement gyro...

@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

Fellow PC gamers that prefer using a controller, which is your favorite and why?

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

@KaiEkkrin For me, the PS5 controller has been a really nice alternative to the Steam Controller, since it has gyro and the touchpad.

I'm not sure on any of the other extra features. I know some PS games have come to Steam, but I don't have most of them (I should test HZD, tho.. 🤔 )

dunno how well it works outside of Steam either, other than emulators—where it does work well

(also worth noting that all of my experience with it is on Linux, not Windows)

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

@alexyeahdude I like the Dualsense a lot myself, but I definitely agree about the battery. It being built-in and only lasting a few hours are by far the biggest issues I have with it

And yeah, same here. No issues setting up controllers on Linux. They all kinda just work

i want to emphasize that, while I do sometimes boost posts that are anti-Windows (or at least make jabs at it), i am absolutely not the type of person to try pushing "Linux superiority" down people's throats. use what works best for you, Linux or not

i will say that the penguin side is pretty cool though

Okay I finally deactivated my Twitter. Enough is enough. I don't trust that site enough to even have an account on it anymore.

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

@bearmine I deleted the app from my phone weeks ago, and have been using it less and less over time, but haven't quite pulled the trigger on closing my account yet. Gets more tempting to every day, though..

Akzel,

@cassidy Iirc, the accurate trimming option makes it to where the video has to be re-encoded. So you get much higher accuracy, but possible quality loss + it taking a lot longer to trim

revisited Pokemon Shield for a bit, which prompted a quick comparison to Violet

technical & performance issues aside, Scarlet/Violet had a lot of nice improvements over SwSh, with the UI and open world and whatnot

but clothing options were such a massive step backward

GNOME Web users: are you as annoyed as I am with this menu on GitHub refusing to go away? It looks like it’s either busted feature detection on GitHub or a busted CSS implementation in WebKitGTK—regardless, here’s how to fix it

  1. Open ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Epiphany/data/epiphany/user-stylesheet.css

  2. Add:

@supports selector(:open) {
anchored-position[popover]:not(.:popover-open) {
display: none;
}
}

  1. In Web, go to Main Menu → Preferences → Appearance, enable Use Custom Stylesheet
Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

@cassidy on the upside, this issue doesn't happen in the gnome-nightly build, so this workaround hopefully won't be needed for Epiphany 45

this is great to have in the meantime, though!
