This is definitely nowhere near an actual design yet, but for some reason I'm trying to think about how to attach a scoring system to a game about assembling charcuterie boards. 🎲✂️

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

@grimalkina LUA is interesting but maybe too practical. I've been meaning to toy around with Godot but haven't really committed to the effort yet.

Contest cultures ("constantly prove you belong! Prove you're smart! Everything here is a dog eat dog competition!") tear people down under the guise of "toughness" and "identifying brilliance." In psych, we know this is destructive to long term sustainable work and mastery. We know it's systematically leveled at marginalized folks more.

These beliefs are at the heart of it all. This cannot be what we continue to let define who belongs in technical work and cultures.

@grimalkina I'm so tired. But also, thank you for the reminder that maybe it's because the system is set up to be tiring.

    @lzg I feel like we unfortunately live in a society where the most expedient solution to a problem is to shoot/bomb it.

    I spent the better part of a day making a mediocre thing and it feels bad. But actually I should be happier about this and celebrate my shitty first draft, because it's a necessary step towards making something that's actually good.

    So, note to self: celebrate progress, not perfection.

    Sooo. Cookie cutters. Technically they can be made of any material, but sure, metal cookie cutters. The Internet says they became thing in the late 15th century, but they could have existed as early as the, uh ... let's say the Bronze Age.

    WHERE ARE MY BRONZE AGE COOKIE CUTTERS?

    Remember, when people talk about AAA studios, it refers to the sound of the screaming during the process. AA studios have slightly less screaming. AAA+ is all the screaming plus a little bit extra. Indie means the devs scream independently.

    As usual Ed Yong is perhaps the only scicom journalist bringing a true patient-centered perspective to this writing. Please share -- these symptoms aren't mine but they are so wildly debilitating and happening to so many in our community. And our healthcare system and doctors are failing those of us with and

    @grimalkina Now I'm remembering why I left the field of healthcare. Lots of opportunity and interest when it comes to healthcare tech, but trying to actually make positive change was a slog, and I just didn't have the energy for it.

    I can’t have been the only one to think of this but wouldn’t it be nice if you could create a simulated 80s/90s cartoon experience on Netflix or whatever by adding a few shows to a playlist and then have them going through each in the right order but randomised shows? Then I wouldn’t have to keep changing the show for my 3 yo when he gets bored. 3yo’s don’t want to binge watch, they want variety!

    @Alan_Au@mastodon.social avatar

    @CatherineFlick Maybe Animaniacs reruns solve the variety problem?
