It’s because Big Clay® wants to keep you from buying into loam’s narrative.

Three cheers for the loam empire, may its topsoil never erode!

Aleric,

We have two cats. They’ll both get their heads in the hole and get stuck.

Aleric,

You don’t get things done? Man, if my ADHD is flaring up, I start like fifteen projects and get each one at most 10% done, get frustrated, and end up playing video games and eating ice cream. That’s like 150%!

Aleric,

100%, excel is great for spreadsheets and garbage as a database, yet so many people keep using it as a database. I’m currently pushing for my department to transition their many “excel databases” to proper databases and I’m getting mass surprised Pikachu face because no one else knows they’re not the same.

Aleric,

Indeed, I’m pushing for SQL but work in a field that sees Excel as a huge improvement over past practices. They’re about one step removed from writing on toilet paper.

My original career was in a much more data intensive field, so I’ve become “that guy” regarding proper data storage and hygiene. Case in point: we sit directly next to IT. Every time we talk about data collection, I’ll get up on my SQL soap box and one of the IT folks will let out a comical groan.

Aleric,

Why are we still referring to these human shit stains as settlers? Invaders? Genocidists? Murderers and thieves? Settlers gives them a legitimacy they lack.

Aleric,

You pro-genocide, Israeli apologists wankers are the worst.

“Booo hooo, the poor Israelis systematically displaced and subjugated an entire population and that population is fighting back? What nerve, the Palestinians should all die quietly so “settlers” can move into their homes.”

You’re really just the worst people. I’d say you’re less than people but that’d make me just like the Israeli government.

Aleric,

Resemble a monopoly, yes, in the way a horse resembles a zebra. They might look similar but are decidedly different. Let’s break it down.

Private care monopoly: having no competition to lose business to, cuts corners as much as possible, maximizing profits while degrading quality of service. Can be ostensibly held to standards of care by local authorities but, being the only option, can often tell them to piss off.

Socialized hospital: being neither beholden to shareholders nor having a profit motive, has no financial incentive to cut corners provided the hospital is adequately funded. Funding is often contingent on achieving standards of care. Government can step in and reform underperforming facilities.

Given your previous replies, I suspect I’m going to regret this comment, but I’m feeling like rolling the dice.

Aleric,

That’s a lot of words and quotes when it would have been a lot faster to simply say:

“I am unable to contradict anything you said without pulling points out of context, completely disregarding others, and (my favorite of all) ending with a point that not only has been contradicted multiple times elsewhere, but is directly, stunningly contradicted by the very article we are commenting about.”

Thanks for the laugh, mate. You yanks are drowning in your kool-aid while screaming at anyone offering help that you’re Olympic swimmers.

Aleric,

I never understand why people think whataboutism arguments actually mean anything. Do they do this at home too? When their significant other suggests they need to do a better job picking up after themselves, is their first response about how the neighbour across the way is a bit messy so it doesn’t matter?

Aleric,

I’m in the United States. Way back in the day, I worked as a bill collector. A customer made a similar comment to me while my supervisor was recording the call, just coincidentally for quality. They reported him to the police and I was later asked to testify at his trial. He was sentenced to six months in jail for making terroristic threats.

For context, this was shortly after 9/11 so people were on high alert. I doubt anyone at Lemmy is going to report you, we’re just concerned that sort of behavior is going to cause an amount of trouble that later cost/benefit analyses would lead you to regret.

Aleric,

That’s the internet way, though! When provided with criticism, double down on whatever you’re doing in the most melodramatic way possible. Do so doubly if the criticism is well meaning.

Aleric, (edited )

Little known protesting fact: if your protest doesn’t solve all problems at once, at least one neckbeard will post the smoothest-brained criticism somewhere online while frantically masturbating over how clever they think they are.

I hope you have clean socks.

What did you get up to during the COVID quarantine?

I was in school so when that was put on hold I essentially played video games like it was a job. I remember vividly playing Grand Theft Auto IV in one sitting for the Liberty City Minute achievement and I’m pretty sure I played through Master Chief Collection....

Aleric, (edited )

Warmsoder there is what you might call a “serial bullshitter”, so they’re probably just making it up. I’ve caught them lying a few times. It’s sad.

Aleric,

I’m guessing the original commenter lives in an uninsulated tin shack in the Arizona desert.

Think about if we switched the girl with Mitch McConnell and the painting with one of him as a turtle head emerging from Donald Trump’s prolapsed anus. What would the title be? “Bitch McConnell”? “Fuck this guy”? “Am I turtley enough for you now, Donnie”? Most of us would be okay with that. I’d be okay with it because Mitch McConnell intentionally and publicly hurts people for his personal gain. But my point is the title refers to the content.

Posts like these, where it’s mean spirited humor that comes at the expense of an anonymous person or groups of people, often have titles that avoid referring to the content and even more rarely refer to the “joke”. Is it because they know even referring to it shows you know you’re being an asshole? Does actually owning it make more people uncomfortable?

“Fat girl Jabba Pizza Hutt lool”

“Photoshop: Painter mocks sad little girl for being overweight”

See. It makes you look like an asshole, because it’s an asshole post.

At least mock yourself too: “childhood lead exposure leads to significantly reduced intelligence and a diminished capacity for empathy”

What can we do when something is too vast to provide representative examples for?

I feel like often people ask me “Oh yea? Name some examples.” and the burden is on me to prove something by providing representative examples. But often it’s so overwhelming how many examples there are for something that I feel obligated then to either list everything, or try extra hard to find good examples, and even then...

LOL. Why would you care to debate atheists? Assuming you follow an Abrahamic religion, you have your bipolar sky wizard with his bizarre, inconsistent mythos, while we have standards of evidence for what we believe.

While we do poke fun at the religious, most of us ultimately don’t care what you believe. We do care about the batshit actions taken by the ostensibly religious to enforce their personal beliefs on others, presented in the guise of religion. If the latter isn’t you, we’re typically not concerned. So why do you care?

Aleric, (edited )

I appreciate the sentiment, but I don’t even know if I have a soul. I’ll probably find out in the next thirty years.

I worry about the capacity for the religious to engage in active critical thinking, something that is necessary for a thriving, functional society but needs to be -at least temporarily- suspended to be religious, but I’m generally not going to debate theists over that point because it’s disrespectful of their beliefs. It’s also completely fruitless and frustrating to engage in debates with someone whose arguments aren’t grounded in observable, testable phenomena. They’ll always “win” because they can make up whatever they want.

Anyhow, we largely leave you alone, please leave us alone too. We’d appreciate it. With that being said, you have my encouragement to go hard, Galilee guns blazing, on any atheists who give you shit for being a theist.

Aleric,

They made it up. I won’t be surprised if it goes this way, but there’s no indication that’s how it is now.

Aleric,

Cameras everywhere, all the time, backed up to the cloud in multiple locations. A copy on a private server would be ideal. It’s not foolproof but it’s better than nothing.

It wasn't just the goblins — is J.K. Rowling doing Holocaust denial now? (forward.com)

The most famous forms of Holocaust denial and revisionism tend to focus on Jews, casting doubt, for example, on how many were exterminated in the camps. But denying the impact the Nazis had on the other groups they targeted, including queer and trans people, disabled people and Romani people, is still Holocaust denial. Maybe...

Aleric,

Acquiring a copy on the open ocean also provides no royalties.

Aleric,

That’s a great point. I’ve found treasures I’d never have found otherwise in used bookstores.

Aleric,

Give yourself some credit, you have way more hair than that. Sure, it’s not on your head, but you do really well with what you’ve got.
