I think that’s where that scene from Goncharov was set

Australia's iconic eucalyptus was shipped across the globe. Now, this flammable tree has 'gone feral' (www.abc.net.au)

Portugal, Greece, Spain, Chile, California and now Hawaii have all battled wildfires this year as high temperatures and strong winds have whipped small sparks into violent infernos. But fire needs fuel, and what these places also have in common is an invasive species — Australia’s eucalyptus tree....

Perhaps exporting koalas to anywhere with eucalypts could be a solution

In a generation, the idea of keeping cats as pets will be considered socially unacceptable in Australia, and even sharing cute cat photos online will be considered as unacceptable as using racial slurs. Cat memes will be replaced with marsupial memes, much in the way that the Easter Bilby replaced its invasive vermin predecessor.

It’s a good day to be a landlord in Australia

Signal is Flawed, Why XMPP is Amazing! (new animated video) (monero.town)

Some will curse me out for discussing decentralization and freedom. I am NOT saying the average person should be concerned with CIA spying. What I’m saying is that one should promote decentralized internet infrastructures that empower the individual over corrupt institutions, even though this threat model likely does not apply...

Russia’s out-of-control military spending. What are the implications for the rest of the economy? (novayagazeta.eu)

In the first six months of 2023, total budget expenditure rose to almost 15 trillion rubles (€142.3 billion), an increase of 2.5 trillion rubles (€23.7 billion) on the previous year, with defence spending responsible for almost the entire difference, economic analyst Boris Grozovsky says. The Russian government has...

It’s in MbS’ interests that his golf buddy/useful idiot Trump wins the presidential election. As such, we can expect oil prices to keep increasing until November 2024, on the theory that significant proportions of Americans will vote against the incumbent primarily out of hip-pocket pain at the pump.

Repeat offenders: Thousands of Russian prisoners joined the army in exchange for an early release. Many have gone back to crime upon their return (meduza.io)

Since the start of 2023 alone, Russian courts have received at least 64 rape cases where military serviceman (this does not include Wagner Group mercenaries) were the defendants. In 2022, there were 110 such cases. Every second victim was a minor.

What’s the Bare Minimum Number of People for a Mars Habitat? (www.universetoday.com)

A recent preprint paper examines the minimum number of people required to maintain a feasible settlement on Mars while accounting for psychological and behavioral factors, specifically in emergency situations. This study was conducted by a team of data scientists from George Mason University and holds the potential to help...

Presumably some of them would have to be female, making a Mars colony settled entirely by muskies unviable.

Rise of draconian anti-protest laws in Australia is highlighted by UN Special Rapporteur (www.edo.org.au)

A UN Special Rapporteur has raised concerns about increasingly draconian laws that restrict citizens’ rights to peaceful protest around Australia. UN Special Rappoteur Dr Marcos Orellana [1] said in his interim report today that: “Draconian restrictions on the right to protest in several states are also very troubling....

As the old saying goes, “people like to work hard in the past tense”. So mostly retired boomers burnishing the sense of responsibility they avowedly had in previous decades, all the better to mount the moral high ground.

It used to be that Coca-Cola and Pepsi divided the sides in the Middle East between them (one sold their product in Israel, and was banned in much of the Arab world, which the other took). Now history may be repeating itself with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The commonly accepted narrative is that Nick Cave saved Kylie’s career by elevating her from a disposable pop star to indie credibility. Though it’s more likely to be the other way around: before Where The Wild Roses Grow, Cave was largely unknown outside the goth subculture, and getting a bit old there. Kylie exposed him to Middle Australia and arguably put him on a path to National Treasure status, beloved of middle-aged people who read serious newspapers, and few of whom would have ever listened to a Birthday Party record.

When you think about how he was making chart-topping pop by day and fronting The Smiths by night, it boggles the mind.
