It's entirely justifiable that much of the immediate concern over the NYC cordon pricing delay is over the MTA funding loss.

But it's the realization that explicitly de-incentivizing driving is basically impossible in the US that worries me most.

in was 30, so I opened the window a few hours ago. Now the AQI is technically 54 (according to iqair.com), but the pm2.5 meter that I have right next to the open window reads 92..

What if we didn't burn the fucking planet down with cars and private jets and leaking methane ("natural" gas) wells and coal-fired electricity?

Sigh. A sad but noble end to a ~15yo pannier. Somehow it got lost on the way to school. If anyone happens to find a white Ortlib pannier on Queens Blvd or near the Kosciuszko Bridge, please let me know. Probably the most valuable thing in there was the (new) bike shorts, but it'd still be nice to have it back. Thankfully no ID/wallet/electronics/fancy clothes in there, just womens' clothes and a $20 kids camera.

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

Ah shit. Turns out she lost one of the new panniers. My new pannier. So if anyone happens to find a black (not white!) Ortlieb pannier on Queens Blvd or near the Kosciuszko Bridge, contact dilinger@queued.net. I'd appreciated if folks shared this post outside of mastodon.

[she thought she'd lost a white one, but I found the other white one in the closet and can't find the other black one, so..]

It's one of the bigger ones; not the normal 20L backroller capacity, but 35L capacity.

chrome update wtf, if you're not running with "use system titlebar" enabled, the minimize, maximize/restore, and close buttons vanish when you maximize the window. Between this and moving the tab finder button back and forth, my faith in disabling auto-updates has been renewed, yet again.

Andres4NY,

@enobacon Theming stuff in chromium is.. interesting. It dynamically loads libgtk3, libgtk4, or libqt* depending on what's available on the system and how you've configured things. Also the xdg-desktop-portal-gtk/gnome/kde packages play a role.

This is creepy af. "I recognize it is important for my parents to monitor what I do on my phone. Nothing on my phone is private."

"While at home, the phone will remain in
these shared spaces:" "I understand that the phone is not allowed
in these rooms:"

That's for kids 14 & older. Did you have a phone in your room? Did your parents listen in? Did they read the handwritten notes you sent to your friends in class? Did they search your room for adult books/mags?

I'm not saying they should have free reign to spend hours a day on 4chan or Daily Stormer or whatever, but also kids deserve to be able to text their friends without parents looking over their shoulder... Jeez.

It's amazing to me that people propose that violence against politicians is somehow never justified.

Politicians have the ability to impose severe violence against you. They can direct police to harass, detain, injure, and potentially even kill you. They can direct government agencies to seize your home, money, livelihood, or even your children. Through legislation, they can literally make your very existence illegal. They have immense power, and you do not. You have few tools against them.

I ran for office, and beforehand had a conversation with my wife about the potential for bricks through our windows. But at the same time, if I am an elected official in power and abuse that power, then I'd be absolutely deserving of that brick (or worse).

In light of NY's awful governor torpedoing , a few facts worth noting:

  1. Transportation is the largest share (28%) of the US's by sector. The next biggest sector, electricity, has been shrinking for the past two decades:
    https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/inventory-us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-and-sinks

  2. By total emissions per year, the US is #2 (behind China):
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions

  3. By cumulative emissions, the US is #1, and it's not even close.

  4. Per-capita above 2% of global emissions, we're also #1.

"US Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Economic Sector, 1990-2022" A graph ordered by most-to-least amount per sector, in million metric ton emissions over time. Transportation is on top (it's hard to tell, but either staying the same or actually growing larger since 1990). Then Electric power sector, which grows a bit between 1990 and 2000, then levels off, and finally starts shrinking to actually a size that's below 1990. Under that, Industry; it shrinks slightly from 1990 to 2022.
Table from wikipedia showing countries and their fossil fuel emissions from 1970 to 2022. China is in first place, but having 0.91 mil tons/yr back in 1970, then 2.4mil in 1990, then 6.2 in 2005, and in 2022 12.6mil. % of world, it's just under 33%. Next is the US, with 4.6mil in 1970, then 5mil in 1990, then 6.8mil in 2005, and down to 4.8mil in 2022. % of world, it's 12.6% Then India, growing from 0.213mil in 1970 up to 2.7mil in 2022, and about 7% of the world's emissions.
"Cumulative CO2 emissions (1850-2021)" A bar graph ordered by billion tonnes of CO2 for each country. The USA is in the lead, at around 425 bil (or over 500bil if you include "Land use, forestry"). Next is China, at just under 250bil (just under 300 including "Land use, forestry").

The fun thing about parenting is the multiple to-do lists. There's the work/professional todo lists. There's the personal todo list. There's the todo list that is the unanswered emails in your inbox. The todo list of just stuff you forgot to add to a list. The todo list of various tasks your kids' teachers are expecting (permission slips, random school events, etc). If you've got kids with disabilities: stuff their doctors/therapists need (who doesn't love another 20 page questionnaire?)...

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

Did you remember to fill out all the camp forms? We're touring yet another middle school tomorrow night. The parent-teacher conf is next week, and the school counselor wanted to schedule something separately. The kids need more underwear, don't forget to order some. Do you have time to run to the store before I pack the kids' lunch for school tomorrow? Your passport expired, was I supposed to remind you or were you supposed to remind me? Our voter ballots are still sitting on the counter.

When I met my wife, she was squatting illegally in this warehouse on Boylston St in Boston. We'd bike from MIT, where there were actual bike lanes, cross the bridge, and suddenly it's just hair-raising chaos with no bike lanes anywhere and masshole drivers (or lost parents in rental cars visiting their college student children trying to find the Turnpike).

Now there's protected bike lanes on Boylston and Brookline? Jealous.

Screenshots, then img2pdf to create a 1.5 MB .pdf 🙄
