I had misunderstood what "Checks & Balances" meant in my civics education. Apparently it means that the balance is tipped in favor of whoever can write the biggest checks to legislators & justices.

That's not "irony." That's exactly the kind of shit that protesters are warning us about.

Rapper Meek Mill is wondering out loud if Africans have access to streaming music apps like Spotify, and if so, if they listen to his music.

There aren't enough stories about the Africans working at big tech companies, but there are a lot of us. There are many Ghanaians, South Africans, Kenyans, and Nigerians ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฟโ€โ™‚๏ธ, working in tech.

I often remind folks that Nigerian 7th grade math curriculum includes binary, octal, hexadecimal, statistics and data, algebra, and geometry.

Every "we're updating our Terms of Service" email that a company sends out should be legally required to include a link that allows you to delete your account.

Oh fantastic, that free service I used once 5 years ago to RSVP for a party still has my email and now has new Terms? How about you lose my information immediately?

Correction: faster than our politicians can respond. Infrastructure can actually be modified pretty quickly once you stop prioritizing cars everywhere.

UGH! I hate when articles act as if kids stopped going outside because parents were afraid of "stranger danger".

Parents were afraid of their kids CROSSING THE STREET. I literally wasn't allowed to cross the street in front of my house (which was a state highway) until I was 11 or 12. The street in front of my house!

All three things are true in the US:

  1. Driving should be a lot more expensive (fewer/no subsidies).
  2. Transit should be a lot cheaper (more subsidies, and ideally free).
  3. Transit should be a lot more frequent, clean, reliable, and predictable.

Time to build: about 45 mins (not including soldering the power supply)
Materials:
(4) $5 Arctic P12 fans
(2) $10 10x20x1 1200D filtrete MERV-11 filters
(2) $7 20x20x1 1500 MERV-12 filtrete filters (pack of 12 off ebay)
duct tape
zip ties
cardboard
12V power supply (free because I soldered a random old adapter, but normally $10 plus $3 or so for a splitter. Or get the fans with built-in splitters)

Total: approx $55, next one will cost about $70.

This is my . It's an old android phone ( 3 running ) with very cracked screen and various kinds of water damage. It's charging using a generic cradle/stand (https://www.ebay.com/itm/333407408496?var=542466415127), and the time is displayed using the following app from https://f-droid.org/en/packages/omegacentauri.mobi.simplestopwatch/

I could use alarms and white noise if I wanted, but I don't need that so I mounted it up high, above a window.

Somehow, #Costco was out of carts. I don't know how that happens. There were people waiting at the entrance, trailing other people to their cars to grab their carts.

"No sweat," I told the security people at the store entrance. "I brought my own cart."

"One editorial opined that the new parkways would, by relieving the traffic load on the Southern and Northern State Parkways, 'Solve the problem of access to Moses' Long Island parks for generations.' The new parkways solved the problem for about 3 weeks. '[...]3 weeks after they opened that I decided to go out to Jones Beach on a Sunday', Paul Windels recalls, '[...]by God it was as jammed the Southern State ever was!'. Moses announced that he had the solution: build 45 miles of new parkways."

Your regular reminder from the 1930s and the 1970s that shutting down highways is not only good for the climate, but good for congestion as well. And any state DOTs or politicians who claim "just one more lane will fix it" are completely full of shit.

I really wish these bike friendly city ranking lists wouldn't count door-zone bike lanes or "protected" bike lanes that use plastic straws (and are clogged with parked cars/trucks) as bike infrastructure.
