Last night I was replacing my dishwasher. I turned off the dishwasher circuit on the panel, started working on it.. then I tried to play some music. No internet. Turns out the dishwasher is on the same circuit as the wifi's power receptacle. Man, I love old houses!

(Luckily I use , so I had music automatically downloaded to my phone in various subsonic clients.)

Kids are like those apex predators on nature shows. The herd of household objects is mostly safe, but they minute they see something that's old and sick, they pick it off. That throw pillow has a small hole? Out goes half the stuffing. A small rip in your fitted sheet? Not anymore, now you have a BIG rip that gets bigger every day.

@peter @hakamadare @adriano @jjoelson I'll also point out that much like academia, the idea of putting things out into the world that anyone can use (science, code) by itself is pretty great; we all benefit. However, when you have unrestricted, essentially unregulated monopolies, they're going to hoover everything up (free AND proprietary). This problem isn't unique to software, and needs to be addressed separately.
