UN Special Rapporteurs have called on the Colombian Government to urgently investigate the fatal shooting of indigenous journalist Abelardo Liz, following an investigation by Bellingcat and Cerosetenta

With Cerosetenta we investigated the killing of Abelardo Liz, an indigenous Colombian journalist who was shot on camera whilst covering clashes between protesters and the army, in a land demonstration in Corinto, Colombia in 2020. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2023/12/11/the-sound-of-bullets-the-killing-of-colombian-journalist-abelardo-liz/

Bellingcat,
@Bellingcat@mstdn.social avatar

We analysed 118 videos from that day, including the video Abelardo filmed himself. Using both video and audio analysis techniques we could plot the direction and area the bullet likely came from.

Bellingcat,
@Bellingcat@mstdn.social avatar

Our investigation found that the bullet that killed Abelardo likely came from the position of the soldiers that day, in direct contrast to their testimonials that claimed the shooting had come from rebels in the mountains. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2023/12/11/the-sound-of-bullets-the-killing-of-colombian-journalist-abelardo-liz/

The UN has now made public that a month after our publication in January, they sent an official communication to the Colombian Government asking for accountability in the case. The government is yet to respond https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=28725

How do you analyse the scale of changes in a contested environment, difficult to observe on the ground? Bellingcat researcher Annique Mossou takes you through the use of free-to-access satellite imagery tools with real life examples of analysis from the West Bank. https://www.bellingcat.com/resources/2024/05/17/how-to-use-free-satellite-imagery-to-monitor-the-expansion-of-west-bank-settlements/?utm_source=mastodon

In our latest guide Bellingcat researcher Annique Mossou explains how you can use free-to-access satellite data to track the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank… https://www.bellingcat.com/resources/2024/05/17/how-to-use-free-satellite-imagery-to-monitor-the-expansion-of-west-bank-settlements/?utm_source=mstdn

Despite being illegal under international law, settlements in the West Bank have continued to expand. https://press.un.org/en/2016/sc12657.doc.htm

Bellingcat,
@Bellingcat@mstdn.social avatar

You don’t always need to rely on paid satellite tools to carry out research and we show how you can use Google Earth Pro, Google Earth Engine and Sentinel Hub to monitor settlement expansions, highlighting the limitations and advantages of each tool...

Bellingcat,
@Bellingcat@mstdn.social avatar

We used these tools ourselves to examine settlements in the West Bank in the recent Bellingcat/Scripps documentary A Hidden War, but the techniques and tools outlined can be applied anywhere in the world. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2024/04/29/the-hidden-war-in-gaza-and-the-west-bank/

In our recent investigation, Bellingcat’s Carlos Gonzales and the Latin American Center for Investigative Journalism (CLIP) investigated the case of a TikTok Influencer with 150,000 followers whose posts about people smuggling activities didn’t quite add up...

The research also highlighted a trend in human smugglers using the social platform to promote their services.

Many open source tools require understanding of programming languages, which can be a real barrier. But there is a way to access them without coding knowledge. In our latest video Bellingcat's Aiganysh Aidarbekova shows you how to use notebooks to access useful research tools: https://youtu.be/ymCMy8OffHM

Bellingcat,
@Bellingcat@mstdn.social avatar

We've been producing these videos for those who want to learn how to use open source tools but don't possess existing coding knowledge. See the full series playlist on our YouTube and look out for more beginner tutorials coming out soon!

We've seen an uptake in accounts using the term OSINT, in some cases to boost poor analysis. This can be confusing for those looking for considered and objective research in their feed. So we wrote a guide on the warning signs of bad open source research https://www.bellingcat.com/resources/2024/04/25/oshit-seven-deadly-sins-of-bad-open-source-research/?utm_source=mastodon
