I'd love your input...

I recently (2021/2022) sold my gas cars and bought two EV’s. Though I kept my two motorcycles. I’ve been compiling my thoughts about how it’s been so far, and realized I have compiled pages and pages of notes and those notes are all over the place. Just tons of little tiny differences to massive differences in the driving...

CADmonkey,

I’ve pictured an EV as something you’d treat like a cell phone - once you are home and not using it anymore, you plug it in to charge. Is this what you do, or do you use charging stations? It seems like a great way to avoid standing in the cold pumping gas.

This Year’s Iowa Caucus Is On Track For Lowest Turnout Since 2000 (www.nytimes.com)

A New York Times analysis of the results released so far estimated that the final turnout will be around 110,000 voters. As of 11:30 pm Eastern time, about 105,000 votes had been recorded. That would be significantly below the 187,000 Republicans who voted in 2016, which was a record turnout. About 122,000 voted in 2012, 118,000...

CADmonkey,

I still remember his Tulsa rally, in one of the reddest states in the US. He got tricked into thinking there would be a million people present. And he bragged on it. But only 6,000 people showed up.

CADmonkey,

I think that’s right.

CADmonkey,

Protesting is a threat. The problem is, when you don’t get what you want, you’re supoosed to foklow through on that threat.

CADmonkey,

I recently sold two bikes, one that was weird and uncomfortable (but fun) and one that was fun but needed work almost every time I rode it. I bought one new bike that just works and it’s been a blast.

Having multiple bikes is only fun for me if I have enough time to ride and maintain them all.

CADmonkey,

There’s more to go wrong on an old washing machine and each control board was unique to the machine

What? Old washing machines just use switches and a cam that’s on a timer. Anyone who can read a basic schematic can figure out what is wrong with one.

CADmonkey,

Having a newer machine cost me slightly less money on utilities, and considerably more in washing machine parts.

CADmonkey,

Does an old school washer dryer that runs off timer relays / knobs / push buttons really have a CPU?

Nope, it’s just a timer-drive. cam triggering switches. The physical cam IS the CPU.

We have reached a point in time where there are adults who think everything that runs through multiple steps must have a microcontroller, because only really really old machines* do without.

*For the most part. I bought a brand new whirlpool dryer late last year, and it has a mechanical timer in it.

CADmonkey,

I recently tried some dual-color silk filament. Half the filament is one color, half is another color. It makes cool looking parts that are different colors on each side.

CADmonkey,

There is a more-or-less constant stream of air moving across the US. This stream of air is pushing the cold air at the north pole up north.

As the earth warms, this stream of air weakens. It can’t push the cold air up north, which causes the titty that is the polar vortex to sag ever southwards.

CADmonkey,

Even if they had the custom 3D printed joysticks?

CADmonkey,

For years I’ve improved frozen pizzas by just adding more mozzarella.

CADmonkey,

Often times, I go to bed with intentions of sleeping early, only to find out that my wife has other plans for me. ❤️

CADmonkey,

This is awesome. Miéville is one of my favorite authors. The Scar and Iron Council are my favorites after Perdido Street Station.

CADmonkey,

I have four of them, they know. Any small animal that gets in their yard has about five seconds to escape before being eaten.

CADmonkey,

It’s fun when you’re a guy who can do a convincing woman’s voice before dropping right back into a gravelly baritone.

CADmonkey,

I think the 2nd Descent game worked in a similar fashion. Entering a cheat code from the first Descent game would reduce you to 1% shields and health.

CADmonkey,

As does the auto industry, aerospace…

Outside of construction and plumbing plenty of stuff is metric here. Even our weird imperial units are based on metric units.

CADmonkey,

I have a lot of specifications stuck in my head from previous jobs. A fun one is that precast concrete bridge beams aren’t just concrete and rebar. They typically have a bunch (20-30 or more depending on size) of 13 mm steel cables that are each under about 13,000 kg of tension. The cables are pulled to a specific tension in the concrete form, the concrete is poured around them, then the cables are cut at each end.

CADmonkey,

A place I used to work had a similar problem with people flushing the wrong kind of paper. Turns out the company, which sold expensive charcoal grills, wasn’t putting enough tp in the employee bathrooms.

CADmonkey,

Because it’s easier to find a car covered in 2A stickers and pictures of AR15’s and steal the guns out of it.

CADmonkey,

Polls by whom, asking who, with what methodology? If it’s cold-calling people to ask them who they will vote for you can bet that nobody under 60 is answering.

CADmonkey,

One of my favorite games makes no mention of the main character’s gender, and the main character is always depicted in an outfit that is a sort of cross between a spacesuit and worker’s coveralls. And it doesn’t make one bit of difference in the game.

CADmonkey,

Yup!

CADmonkey,

Two things have saved me money in this life - being able to cook, and being able to fix things.
