fedi i want to learn more about how people indexed content before computers. Do you know what search terms to use / any cool things you can link?

@arcade Card catalogs

“The readers guide to periodical literature“ was the first-line index of magazines and other periodicals. Came as annual volumes and monthly updates.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

@arcade Reference books. If you needed a particular piece of information, there was a specialized book for it, frequently updated

For some values of frequently

CoolerPseudonym,

@arcade Library indexes like card catalogs and periodical indexes were among the first things to go online, because the advantages of cost, ease of use, and effectiveness, were so huge and so obvious

Hell, now i'm stressed out. Our cat's medicine didn't auto-refill properly from the by-mail compounding pharmacy we use. The order is stuck sitting in their queue. We're going to run out over the weekend. Can't go without. Now I guess I have to try to get the prescription re-issued by the vet and find a compounding pharmacy in this area that does veterinary work and is willing and able to fill the thing tomorrow. Because it's fucking Friday; of course it is. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.

Remember when Republicans called Gore a sore loser? For using the courts? And Gore didn’t even actually lose!

Attempting to violently prevent lawful transfer of power is exactly the constitutional definition of treasonous ‘levying war’.

I mean, treason shemeason, but c’mon. You can’t storm the capitol with the explicit plan of taking hostages or murdering lawmakers, to prevent certification of the election, and not be committing treason.

Memetext. Jan 6 people waving signs on the Capitol steps. Text reads: “Look, all we tried to do was overthrow an election, assassinate elected officials, and impose a fascist dictatorship. But you fucking liberals won't let it go!!!” Which is crudely put, but not wrong.

I dig these companies that are arbitraging USPS ‘forever’ first-class postage stamps. I think it’s funny - it seems like a lot of trouble to make not that much money, and it involves hoarding postage, which is something the USPS can’t approve of. (I wonder if they foresaw that effect.) Still, you do sort of have an underlying asset.

This is our cat Boots, before we adopted him. The Humane Society shelter took this picture. He was in the shelter for nearly a year, because he was so shy. He’d had a bad time before he was surrendered to the shelter; we don’t know details. To help him, give him something to do, and help a kitten who needed a big friend, he was assigned this kitten to socialize.

Boots is with us now and doing fine. The kitten was adopted too. (Before we got there.)

Boots asleep again. On a colorful green blanket. Most of my pictures of him, he’s sleeping. Catching up on rest I guess

Biden’s arguably governing from substantially to Obama’s left (yeah, not hard, but these are mainstream Democrats we’re talking about) but everyone hates him and perceives him as being right-wing and/or doing absolutely nothing

It’s interesting? I guess

I mean whatever. Democrats gonna dem. They are what they are

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

I’m an utter pessimist about US politics though. There aren’t alternatives. “The Dems could be a progressive party and win!” I think that’s demonstrably (well, almost, as it’s counterfactual) untrue.

I think literally the best possible outcome in US politics is…not Trump. Because things can get rather worse.

Being mad because US politics produces nothing better than the Democrats is like being mad at the movements of the earth’s crust, and blaming the crust for not being different than it is

Normalize censoring Nazis

It’s fine

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

And—back to the two selves, public and private, shallow and deep—there is something deeply problematic about separating yourself this way. Personally, I know exactly how this is meant to work and why, and I still can’t do it. The sense of indignation and despair, when I don’t get my way, is simply too strong.

Of course, I don’t think of it as ‘not getting my way’, I think of it as the society going horribly wrong, but the point is that the system itself can’t but ‘see’ it that way.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

So liberalism is a system in which nothing really matters, in which the system can’t take notice of what matters and what doesn’t matter. Wheras every individual has deep commitments about what matters, which are both essentially human and, often, rationally defensible! Liberalism sees difference as exception, whereas we each think we have reasons for making our ‘exception’ the rule. Liberalism can’t treat humans as human. This is a genuine and indefeasible paradox.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

Now, again, this is not some secret. This is the point. Insofar as we all obtrude into the political sphere with our deep commitments, and refuse to give them up precisely because we think they have universally human value, the system stops working, and what are we left with? Well, from liberalism’s own self-understanding, only the omnium bellum contra omnes. The war of all against all. The end of rational constraint. Either totally irrational infowars or actual violence or, certainly, both.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

So how can liberalism be intolerant of intolerance when I’m arguing here that many of ethical commitments, which we essentially have, are universalizing in a way that to the liberal polity necessarily looks aggressively intolerant of their contraries? They’re all like that! The liberal state has no more reason to aggressively exclude nazism than any universalizing commitment, and in practice, it does not reliably make such a distinction. So the paradox of tolerance is a real paradox.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

In actual fact, liberalism does aggressively suppress the actualization of commitments that it sees as incompatible with its institutional nature, and does so pretty indiscriminately. In fact it’s a lot better at crushing left-wing commitments and/or social justice commitments than it is naziism. And I would say that liberalism is, on its own internal criteria, not wrong to do this: the left-wing set of liberatory demands in fact ARE more incompatible with liberalism’s internal imperatives.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

We’re the most dangerous ones. If the paradox of tolerance is not a paradox and liberalism has a coherent position from which to exclude ideologically-driven universalizing commitments, from its own self-understanding, liberalism is right to go after us first. In fact, our only defense within the procedures of the liberal polity itself is to insist on the shallowness of these commitments, to assert that, in fact, we’re not more dangerous in that way. We like the system. It’s the nazis who don’t.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

Except that’s not right, is it. You know it’s not.

CoolerPseudonym,
@CoolerPseudonym@wandering.shop avatar

Anyway, back to the initial question: why is it okay to censor nazis? Well, if you’ve taken my point so far, liberalism can’t really answer that coherently. These dumbass corporate types who own the big Means of Digitial Circulation who insist that, even though they’re not governments, they are still unwilling to use their ownership rights over the internet to censor, because that erodes the conditions for the liberal deal to operate, are, in fact, correct. On the terms of the liberal deal.
