Texas Revamps Houston Schools, Closing Libraries and Angering Parents (www.nytimes.com)

Cheryl Hensley, a librarian in Houston, was excited for the start of school. A veteran of four decades in the city’s public school system, she had stocked her library at Lockhart Elementary, a mostly Black school, with $40,000 in new books, and won a statewide award for her work....

Cybermass,

“yes the libraries should be turned into disciplinary rooms”

“I don’t understand why all of these kids are going crazy and hurting themselves/others, probably the china app”

Jesus fucking Christ america fix your shit

higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs (lemmy.world)

Went to a restaurant in LA today and when I got the check I noticed that it was a bit higher than it should be. Then I noticed this 18% service charge. So… We, as customers, need to help pay for their servers instead of the owners paying their servers a living wage. And on top of that they have suggested tip. I called bs on...

Cybermass,

This line of thinking is what let’s wage thieves sleep at night.

Cybermass,

The sun’s core being filled with a quark plasma soup instead of, for example cotton candy, is also an assumption that is not evidence-based.

It’s almost like we as humans can use logic and reason to determine things to be extremely significantly probable without having proof in our hands.

Cybermass,

Here’s the thing: it doesn’t

Fun fact, none of the Abrahamic religions support gender equality

Cybermass,

Bro… What the fuck

Might as well posted an ad for ladies to be watched through blinds while some creep jerks off

Cybermass,

At this guy’s place they’re only installed in the bathrooms

Cybermass,

Could’ve been funnier if the template wasn’t fucked up

Cybermass,

I bought the pre release, got bored so quickly and never logged more than 2 hours for many many years. I thought they wouldn’t actually keep updating it but they did which is very cool.

Now whenever I open the game to give it a try they force me to get all of this shit I don’t want like a freight thing and I need to build a base and it’s like dude I thought the whole idea was that you could do whatever you want, and then you force me to do all this tutorial shit that I don’t care about? I can’t get into it.

The tutorials should be optional, I wanna explore the universe with just my ship and be a drifter for a while before I find a home planet I like to make my base, I wanna worry about freighters once I’ve experienced the rest of the game not right away. I want to learn the updates at my own pace but it won’t let me so I gave up on it.

Cybermass,

He’s looking to get that good ol’ fashioned German eugenics going again.

Cybermass,

Firefox ftw

Cybermass,

I just use ublock with Firefox, I’m fine with the baked in ads on Firefox I don’t mind supporting them. Considering what the other option is, I want to support them.

Cybermass,

I have no idea who Andrew Wakefield is, I honestly think making news articles about these people is just giving them more of a platform, and something to point at and be like “SEE THEY ARE OUT TO GET ME!! IM THE VICTIM”.

Dumb anti vaxxers are everywhere but I doubt an antivaxxer in Bangladesh knows who these people are. Also the whole anti vax thing died out after restrictions were relaxed and it’s barely important news hearing more of this bullshit we’ve heard about for years when it’s less relevant than ever.

Not global news IMO.

Cybermass,

This is such a bad argument.

“You don’t know who this one conspiracy theorist is so clearly your incapable of understanding that we need to make news about fucking nutjobs everytime they are a nutjobs so that they get more exposure”

How is it even news that she lost her job which she obviously should have lost?

“Hey guys, we got some hot news! The surgeon who fainted whenever he saw blood lost his job!”

Wow thanks for the news, very exciting, very unexpected, it’s totally gonna change things on a global scale for the foreseeable future. Nothing more world changing than someone getting fired for incompetency.

Cybermass,

Ahhh gotcha thanks, I probably won’t remember the name though to be honest.

Cybermass, (edited )

I know I’m not the fucking arbiter of news my dude I literally said IMO.

IMO = in my opinion

There you go, you learned something new. I’m not a mod I’m not calling for this post to be removed I’m just saying in MY OPINION it’s not global news.

Edit: to add onto this point I appreciate that you think it might change some people’s opinions on this anti vaxx stuff but after dealing with my mom’s anti vaxx bullshit I really think anyone who’s dumb enough to believe in this shit won’t be swayed by someone losing their medical license they will just point to it and be like “SEE THE GOVERNMENTS ARE TRYING TO SUPPRESS US! ITS A CONSPIRACY!!”

Every time something like this is in the news my mum just believes her crazy shit even more. It gives credibility that the news and government are colluding somehow.

Cybermass,

I paid for Netflix, cancelled it and got Disney+ instead when they cracked down on password sharing. I am more than happy to end my subscription to Disney and go full pirate, I don’t care and I live in Canada so I’ll never face repercussions.

I’d love to support the creatives but seeing all these strikes it’s not like the execs are paying them livable wages anyways. They complain about not making enough money on streaming then vote to increase just the executives pay by insane margins annually, I can see through your deception execs.

If you are going to hoard your wealth so will I, and when the economy dies cause we are all hoarding our pennies I won’t feel bad for you while you look up from the bounds of the guillotine.

Cybermass,

Of course this comes from the wall street journal lmao straight propaganda

Why shouldn't electric plugs screw in?

I just watched a TikTok about how people used to plug in things to their light sockets when electricity was first becoming popular. And they kept calling the plug a light socket, what rule says it’s not a plug that screws in? And why shouldn’t plugs screw in? We have material science to make plugs and cables hard enough that...

Cybermass,

Basically that weak contact before the device finishes being screwed in would cause a lot of arcing which would definitely cause a short circuit and would definitely trip your breaker almost constantly. The reason lightbulbs can be screwed in is not so much that it’s a convenient way to design an installable electronic but more that lightbulb companies wanted to create a design that would be so easy to replace any person could do it without any training.

So Edison hired a team of engineers to design an easy and safe application and they made the screw in application such that the contact would only get close enough at the very end of screwing and so that none of the metal would be able to contact human skin, avoiding electrocution and minimizing arcing.

For literally any higher draw application this would cause arcing so intense it would flip a breaker or possibly destroy the device and cause a fire. If you want a real life example just take a portable heater, set it to on and plug it into the wall but make that plugging motion last 3-5 seconds. WARNING you will at the very least flip a breaker and at the worst cause a fire and destroy your wall outlet, so don’t actually try this at home lmao
