Why does make it so impossible to figure out the markup for referencing another issue by # in a new issue?

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@ChasMusic YES! Thanks. I'd figured that out but forgot to update here.

In the end, I'd opened a previous issue where I'd used the syntax to see how I'd done it then, which is really more work than should be necessary.

Even Google was unable to help me (and I remember this being the case long before Google's recent results downslide).

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@jurgenhaas Wait, it does?! I guess it does! That's absolutely horrible documentation.

I've clicked on that link multiple times and dismissed it because it's screen after screen of basic HTML. Not what I was looking for or needed. I was looking for special markdown unique to Drupal.org's wysiwyg, which at a minimum should be called with bold/headings. But really, anything that is unique to the system should be at the TOP, not squeezed in small text just below the footer.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@jurgenhaas The spends so much time and energy on Big Initiatives to build community when there are many, many little things that could be fixed to reduce friction for contributors, all of which go ignored.

The new @drupalassoc certified partners is just delusional, and incredibly US centered, so now if you don't pay a fee you're not listed in the marketplace no matter how much you contribute?

In our case (10 people agency + contractors), a $5000 fee is just not worth it, we were happily paying the community supporter tier but we won't do a 5x increase, it's just not reasonable for our budget.

https://www.drupal.org/association/blog/turning-takers-into-makers-the-enhanced-drupal-certified-partner-program

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@pcambra It also continues to put Drupal agencies, who have a $ incentive to advertise their services, over companies and institutions who pay developers to contribute to Drupal because they USE Drupal themselves for their operations. Those developers' contributions continue to be downplayed.

The bias has been baked into the contribution metric system from the start, and now you also have to pay just to be recognized?

It has come to the point that reading an article about that has very simple sentence structure; vague, repetitive statements; a lack of helpful illustrations; and feels like a grade-school theme paper, you're left wondering if it was written by an LLM, or by a human who is following SEO guidance that dumbs down writing in the aim of getting some max SEO score?

Is that the whole point? To make it impossible to tell humans from computers on the internet?

After 6 years of working on Snapchat's Snap Map, I was laid off today. If you have any leads for backend, open data, mapping, or other cool computer nerd positions, please let me know!

@ian Since you mention open data and mapping, when you asked for leads on "cool computer nerd positions" I thought you were setting up a geospatial database of cool computer nerds.

Yeah, super annoyed to have this show up in PhpStorm.

How do you quantify "a lot" and who exactly are these customers?

Remodelled Former Military Bunker

The Belgian landscape still has plenty military bunkers from WOII. What ASAS arkitektur has done in Norway with one is so genius that I wouldn't mind seeing this overhere too.

Congratulations , something in your stack delivered an error I was definitely not expecting when testing this site.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@mikemccaffrey Looks like they're running BackstopJS.

It's a useful tool, but kind of delicate and easy to generate false positives.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@mikemccaffrey True! But I recently had this very error come up in my own tests when something failed on Backstop's end.

When it works, it's great, but when it fails, I find the lack of detailed feedback/logs frustrating.

I think there’s a big opportunity for a hosting company to provide low-cost hosting that revolves around the upcoming Automatic Updates and Project Browser initiatives. I’m thinking no Git (gasp! I know) with automated backups included. What better way to bring new folks into the community than by providing the easiest of on-ramps to a production site.

Sandeep Sasikumar provides an overview of various Drupal hosting options.

https://www.zyxware.com/article/6670/selecting-right-hosting-solution-for-your-drupal-project

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@ultimike But how does that fit into Drupal's pivot to focusing on "ambitious" site builders? If you don't want to deal with things like git, shouldn't you be using Wix or a hosted Wordpress site?

Also, without a decent, flexible, no-code theme option, Drupal is still very limited for newcomers who want to avoid code. Olivero is pretty but WAY too restrictive.

Disappointing how many people in the Drupal community seem just fine with posting AI art. You'd think the open source community would have more understanding about appropriate and inappropriate use of other peoples' works, licensing and proper source attribution.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@e0ipso That was one of the recent examples that inspired my post, but it's been an ongoing thing with some people's Drupal blog posts, and goes all the way to the top with Dries' latest Driesnote.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@kreynen Appealing, perhaps. And I have seen how it provides a steady dopamine hit to people who use it to create art they couldn't do on their own.

But hang around with artists and you'll see how it's impacting them and their craft. Their impression of people who use such tools is not good: it demonstrates a disregard for the ethical, moral and environmental impacts of the technology.

In general, I find Hanlon's razor a good rule to follow:

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

However, when it comes to mega corporations that should know better (Google) a different rule applies:

"Feel free to attribute to Dark Patterns that which might be plausibly explained by corporate disorganization."

A bunch of website managers at my University are learning that switching to Google Tag Manager for GA4 with the retirement of Univ. Analytics last summer, and accepting GTM's defaults, means a whole lot of unintended cookie sharing among sites under the U's domain.

Result: irregular 431 Header-Too-Large errors.

The fact that setting cookie scope to just one's own subdomain is so unobvious in GTM's configuration sure makes this seem intentional.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@kreynen That looks useful! But I don't think it would be helpful here.

Say you have a university with many subdomain websites managed by different people:
sd1.univ.edu
sd2.univ.edu
sd3.univ.edu

By default, GTM sets your GA4 tag scope as "univ.edu" but doesn't tell you! So all subdomains end up sharing their cookies with everyone else. That leads to unnecessary header bloat...

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@kreynen There is a way to limit your cookie scope to your subdomain, but it requires you to know to set a specific extra configuration with a specific name:

https://developers.google.com/tag-platform/security/guides/customize-cookies#tag-manager

You could possibly exclude all cookies scopoed to the base domain, but you might NEED at least one of those for things like SSO. Figuring out which is from where is tricky.

So the only solution at the moment is educating all GTM managers how to restrict their own cookies' scope & why it's important.

DaleTrexel,
@DaleTrexel@drupal.community avatar

@andy_blum If you claim it was the dog farting, you have to show your dog to everyone on the call.

I don't make the rules. That's just how it is!

I'm transferring all my work from a 2019 MBP to a new M3 Max and YIKES is this thing so much faster than the old Intel.

I will not miss having PhpStorm spin up the fans to max whenever I changed a bunch of files, like using Composer to update our Drupal build.

And @ddev + mutagen sync has virtually no delay at all now.
