Vladimir Putin whispers, "I wish Russia were restored to its historical greatness."

One shriveled finger curls shut on the cursed monkey paw, and Khanbaliq once again demands tribute from a weak and crippled Russia.

This is not a “woe is me” post, but rather a “canary in the coal mine.”

I’ve now been dealing with debilitating bronchial symptoms for five solid weeks. All COVID/RSV/flu tests have come back negative throughout this time. But I’m currently in my second period of being unable to taste or smell anything. The standard medical interventions—antibiotics and steroids—are not fixing the problem.

I think we need to start being honest about a few things. People face a real risk of contracting a respiratory disease that can have significant, long-term consequences. We lack effective tests for this syndrome. We do not have effective therapies. The true impact of this situation is being suppressed. Proper resources are not being devoted to these issues.

Please take care of yourselves, my friends. You do not want this in your lives. Vaccinate, mask up, stay away from people if you can. I will be OK. I hope the same for you and yours.

DaveMWilburn,

@hal_pomeranz I'm so sorry. I have friends with long COVID, POTS, etc., and it's pretty awful stuff. We're still learning about the different ways these infections can damage organs and create long-term debilitating effects, but we aren't devoting anywhere near enough resources to study them, treat them, or take care of the people suffering from them. We'd rather just move on as a society and ignore the people left behind, and it makes me so damn mad.

I hope you get some relief soon.

I have had several people that received the ban hammer recently grousing about how it goes against my air of “kindness” and the quote I have in my profile. I firmly believe in the importance of being kind to other people. But there are limits.

Do not confuse kindness with weakness, please.

DaveMWilburn,

@jerry they're confusing being nice with being kind. Kindness requires actively confronting misconduct and cruelty, even where it might inconvenience the antagonists or make them uncomfortable.

folks, dunno how many of you have four small kids, but 6pm is the worst time in all the day to try to do work, especially when that would involve stomaching two hours of Tucker Carlson speaking to Putin. I won't be "live tweeting" but stay tuned for @meduza_en's brief summary

DaveMWilburn,

@kevinrothrock @meduza_en if the brief summary doesn't include an in depth psychological examination of the uncharacteristically tiny table, then I will be extremely disappointed.

I mean this in a loving way, but I have never encountered as many avowed anti-capitalists, communists, and anarchists as when working at Google.

And it's not that your career choices must perfectly reflect your ideals... but there's gonna be a lot of tombstones engraved with "he only partook in apex capitalism as a joke".

Valuable lessons were learned, but not the ones that the mother thought would be learned.🤷🏿‍♂️

    • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
    • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
    • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
    • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

    DaveMWilburn,

@mekkaokereke this is why it's so weird that so many white Americans resist comprehensive police reform. We suffer from this crap, too, even if it is at a lower rate than minorities. Police reform would help all of us.

Hey @jerry this is super low priority and please don't mess with your weekend plans to look into this, but do you have any idea why Bookmarks would be busted on the web interface for my infosec.exchange account? I see this on both mobile and desktop, but it works with 3rd party clients like Tusky. I think I started noticing this shortly after you upgraded glitch-soc in anticipation of the security patch, although it might have been a coincidence.

    DaveMWilburn,

@jerry well, if it's dumb but it works, then it ain't dumb. And it works! Thanks!

The fact that funding for major US national security policy endeavors is being held hostage because Republicans are still pissed that their previous president was caught welcoming Russian election interference and soliciting Ukrainian bribes is simply breathtaking.

I have this memory of drinking frozen OJ growing up. It came in a little paper cylinder, and you put it in a pitcher and added water then stirred and it was orange juice. There was apple juice too...

Is that a thing anymore? What the heck was the frozen juice thing about. I can't even find it anymore.

    DaveMWilburn,

@futurebird yep, we had Minute Maid or Donald Duck brand OJ from concentrate when I was growing up. I think you can still find Minute Maid in the frozen aisles of some grocery stores, but I think you have to hunt around for it.

Quick survey because I need to replace my 14-year-old monitor: Do I need a 4k monitor if I'm using it mostly for email, web browsing (with video) and occasional streaming? Is it worth spending extra, or will a non-4k monitor suit my needs? Keep in mind, I'll likely use this monitor for 14 or more years, so please make your recommendation what that in mind.

Update: Thanks for all the comments so far. To answer a few questions: I have room for only 1 monitor, so I want it to be no smaller than 27" because I often have multiple windows open it it'd be nice if I could put them side-by-side sometimes. I'm willing to go bigger, if it fits into my budget. I'd like to spend no more than $600.

    DaveMWilburn,

@dangoodin I went with a QHD rather than 4k for my 27" with no regrets. I'd go 4K if I were going bigger than 27" though.

When the Director of CSIS calls for kinetic responses to cyberattacks, we should all sit up and take note. We should also all be very concerned. The proposed rules of engagement in this article include:

The United States can and will use all elements of state power to effectively defend the homeland against any threat, in any domain. The Department of Defense stated a version of this policy in the context of integrated deterrence, but it is worth a high-level official saying it again. The official should point out that U.S. policy refuses to target civilian critical infrastructure, so a proportional response to a cyberattack on our critical infrastructure would be serious and likely include economic or military measures.

The article directly calls out the challenges of attribution and understanding of intent, but defaults to a retaliatory stance for reasons that are, in my opinion, deeply hypothetical—especially the hand-wavy claim that "AI" is going to make these threats more dangerous. There is absolutely no evidence for that claim.

The cyberwar might be here, but every day the intelligence community and military make de-escalatory choices about how to respond to these attacks. I contend we're better off for them doing so.
