That depends on your use case, I personally really only ever use RSS on my phone. Anyway, as others have mentioned, you can connect the app to FreshRSS for syncing.

Also, feel free to ignore this, but you could probably make your point without being so condescending. Something like “Cool, but the lack of apps across multiple platforms is a deal-breaker for me.” Calling someone’s work “cute, but […] useless” after they provide it for free to the community is kinda rude, especially considering it’s honestly one of the best actively-developped RSS apps for Android.

Sure all privately-owned cars are problematic, but I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that small vehicles have the same impact as massive SUVs/trucks.

Bigger cars are not only more damaging in crashes with pedestrians/cyclists (which you’ve mentioned but seem to think is unimportant?!) but they also cause more accidents because of poor visibility and longer stopping distances. Also, environmentally-speaking, larger vehicles have a much bigger impact than small cars. Not only are they less fuel-efficient, they also cause more damage to roads leading to more frequent need for repairs.

I agree that ultimately reducing the total number of privately-owned vehicles should be the main goal, but we can also simultaneously strive for smaller cars for the vehicles that are on our roads.

Yeah fuck all cars, you’re definitely preaching to the choir there, but if we could get rid of them I’d start with the huge trucks and SUVs first. Your points all remain valid without equating all cars.

Like I truly wish everyone were vegan, but if someone’s gonna eat meat I’d rather they eat a chicken stir-fry than an EpicMealTime-type monstrosity.

Same with cars, I wish everyone would drop this inefficient, antisocial method of transportation, but I’d also rather someone drive a Prius than a Hummer.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

you can’t transition away from just large cars, you still won’t have the carless infrastructure in place anyway

I don’t disagree with this, but that’s not the point I was trying to make. Maybe I wasn’t clear enough, since your paragraph re:veganism addresses an entire other issue than the one I was trying to highlight.

Let me clarify: Vegans, like anti-car folks, are politically extreme compared to the mainstream views. As a vegan, in my ideal world no one would eat meat. Similarly, in my ideal world no one would drive cars. However, we don’t live in my ideal worlds (far from it).

I don’t condone eating meat, nor do I condone driving cars. But for most people, these are normal, everyday things and they get defensive if they feel attacked for doing them.

As an anti-car person, you probably have more in common ideologically with a Prius driver than a Hummer driver. Equating the Prius driver with the Hummer driver is, in my experience, more likely to generate a negative reaction in the Prius driver where they see you as an enemy, and the Hummer as an ally.

I’d rather create more anti-car sentiment than accidentally contribute to motor vehicle solidarity.

Using pre-transition pictures of someone for a dumb meme is honestly pretty inconsiderate.

Silly me, here I’ve been stealing from Loblaws every time I enter one of their stores!

Not much, admittedly, but not eating seafood does a heck of a lot more than not using straws.

If you truly want to write code from scratch, you first need to create the universe.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s a fair criticism, but I wouldn’t recommend Windows as a daily driver to 95% of people either. If you like/care/know about computers, use Linux, otherwise I’d recommend MacOS over Windows (unless said person uses their computer for gaming, in which case Windows’ll give you the least hassle)

I honestly low-key love it when someone in a car yells out “FAGGOT” when I’m walking down the street. I just give them the gayest little wave and yell back “hey girl!” with a huge smile. I enjoy the validation that I succeed in being visibly queer.

Of course, I live somewhere very safe and decently queer-friendly. I probably wouldn’t enjoy it if I felt in danger, but it’s typically a bunch of teenagers who are clearly in their edgy phase.

I am a victim of the network effect who wishes to degoogle. What do I do?

This post is going to be a bit personal (and maybe a little bit out of context, it’s not just Google software I want to remove) but I’m tired of not knowing what to do about it. I want and have wanted to get rid of a bunch of proprietary software in my life, including but not limited to Google’s software, for quite a while...

I’m relatively young, but my parents weren’t always aware of my whereabouts when I was thirteen. Heck as young as 8 years old they let me bike the 5km to school. I think that trust and autonomy was good for me, especially as a preteen/teen.

Contrast with my younger brother, who our father still tracks via Snapchat in his early twenties. I can say the constant feeling of surveillance has definitely had an impact on his mental health.

I got a Pixel specifically to install GrapheneOS on it after going on a huge FOSS/privacy kick last year (coincidentally around the same time I joined Lemmy…)

Look I definitely agree with you, never had a car and never plan on having one, and I try to promote cycling as a means of transportation as much as possible.

That being said, just replying “bicycles” is likely to rub people the wrong way. Bikes are not a 1:1 replacement for motor vehicles. There has to be investment into public transit, especially for intercity travel, as well as investments into safer cycling infrastructure.

@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Cycling to any body of water is a surefire way to put me in a good mood. I rode to a nearby covered bridge over a river for the eclipse the other day, even before the once-in-a-lifetime celestial event I was just having the best day.

Yes, being intolerant of homophobia that habitually results in murders such as the one we’re discussing is totally equivalent to being intolerant of people practising the Jewish faith peacefully!

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Hate and prejudice for a group of people cannot be peaceful, “peaceful homophobia” is an oxymoron.

Am I a coffee heathen?

So back when I was first living on my own. I of course had no money and I still needed coffee. So I just started doing what I would call cowboy coffee. Where the hot water and grounds are just combined. Then the grounds settle to the bottom. I have had a number of people find this quite uncouth and have tried to make me change....

I’m a pretty big coffee nerd, and work as a barista. I have no patience for snobbery. If someone wants to learn more about coffee, the effects of roasting, immersion, percolation, espresso, I’ll gladly infodump to them and share the knowledge I’ve accrued over the years.

If someone is content with their venti soy mocha thing from Starbucks, or their double double from Timmies, or even store-brand instant coffee, and they don’t feel the need to jump into the coffee world, that’s fine by me. The idea that you must like a certain type of coffee to enjoy it “properly” is silly to me. I’m not yucking anyone’s yum.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

I would describe myself as firmly “in the middle”, and I honestly don’t disagree with your points overall. However, I think Windows isn’t really “easier to use” than most Linux distros, it’s just what most people are used to.

That doesn’t take away from your argument, as being familiar with an OS will make it easier to use and that’s completely valid, but someone who’s used Linux all their life would similarly face struggles using Windows. User inertia is a huge factor contributing to Windows’ marketshare.

This is great news, it’s frankly embarrassing that it took this long. I know here in New Brunswick, our Conservative government has done the absolute bare minimum to help out hungry kids, of which there are many (30 000 kids live in poverty in NB, and many more probably suffer from some degree of food insecurity.)

It’s such a no-brainer to invest in this, like even if you’re a heartless neoliberal ultra-capitalist who thinks the poor should suffer, do you not want your future-workforce-in-training to actually absorb their training? Hungry kids don’t learn good.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Anything related to cycling in all its varieties is okay to post/cross-post on !bicycles 😊 IMO user numbers are still too low on Lemmy to get overly picky over what gets posted where, which is why I set up the community as “anything goes”, and I think cross-posting is a great way to get new people to discover the more specialized bike communities.

I’ve been pretty poor lately (I was unemployed for a few months and my previous roommate moved basically in the middle of the night without warning, leaving me on the hook for the full rent) so I’ve been brewing crappy President’s Choice overroasted “morning blend”. It’s bad coffee, but it’s also 15$ for 1.8kg.

I’ve been coming back to immersion brews lately after a long stint of only using my V60 for pour-overs. My love for coffee was born out of a French press, and was pushed further by the Aeropress, both of which I’ve started to mess about with again. I generally find immersion methods more forgiving with low-quality beans than a pour-over.

I’m excited to start having a bit of income again, I can’t wait to try the new offerings at my local roaster. I’m lucky that I found work as a barista, so I do drink quality coffee most days. I just have to suffer grocery-store beans on my days off (that is until my next paycheck!)
