@Ex_spurt@aus.social

He/Him. Your friendly local, mostly retired guy. Likes sciencey stuff, cars (especially the electric and/or heavily armoured kind), wandering around in the bush, mucking around with food. Ex electrician, soldier, salesman, business manager, consultant, public servant. Proud dad and step-dad. Eternally frustrated customer of https://scorpinc.solutions. Partly retired. May randomly talk about #tanks. Opinions are my own and subject to change.

What's the deal with Startrack and Austpost? Is Startrack like just the shitty cheap bit? I don't get sms or email advice of ST delivery and have to go to the airport to pick up if I miss it. Not using this supplier again if that's the best they can do

timrichards, to auspol
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

There seems to be a dispiriting spiral whereby timid centre-left governments get elected to deal with real problems, but because they're so timid – and scared by vested interests – prove to be ineffective.

So then exasperated voters turn to right-wing politicians who seem at least shouty and confident. (sigh)

The lesson? Supposedly progressive governments should be more confident, less scared of their own shadows and the tabloid media, and actually try to make useful if challenging changes. (Yes I am looking at you, Albanese. Biden too.)

Ex_spurt,
@Ex_spurt@aus.social avatar

@timrichards the purpose of the system is what it does.

Many so-called progressive parties are effectively owned by wealthy donors and populated by wealthy politicians. Even leaving out the blatant corruption that also occurs, just the day to day self interests of all the high net worth individuals involved ensures government for the rich. And the rich are becoming increasingly fascist as their power grows and becomes more assured.

Democracy has succumbed to corruption and no longer works, just like Communism did.

What is this article, I feel like I've woken up in a parallel timeline where Australians are expected to tip https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/nov/21/australians-tipping-habits-fail-to-keep-up-with-rising-restaurant-prices-data-reveals?CMP=MySpace

@timrichards @jimbob @NewtonMark sting is in the tail of the article. 0.52% of payments leave a tip (ie: tourists and people paying on corporate cards)

@jpm I experienced the last of the real dodgy Army cooks when I joined. Ration thieves in more ways that one some of those blokes. Every one I have worked with in the last 20 years has been pretty bloody good. Navy Chefs are the real stand outs though. YMMV

Although they're no substitute for Melbourne's trams, I do like Perth's CAT buses.

The CAT (Central Area Transport) buses are free, frequent services that serve the inner city area. The 5 routes are colour coded (red, blue, yellow, green & purple).

@timrichards @the_rail_life what is accessibility like on new Trams? The specialised CAT busses are very good with tilting bodies and extendable ramps. Just wish they were battery electric.

You would have to be three kinds of stupid at once to call a planned anti-war protest on Armistice Day 'disrespectful'. They didn't call it Rememberance Day because they didn't want people forgetting how much fun it was. Ignoring the victims of war is the ultimate disrespect to those who told you not to.
