@FaceDeer@fedia.io

Basically a deer with a human face. Despite probably being some sort of magical nature spirit, his interests are primarily in technology and politics and science fiction.

Spent many years on Reddit and then some time on kbin.social.

Well, I haven't gone to any of my image AIs and actually asked them to generate naked pictures of young people. So unless you want to go there this will necessarily involve some degree of theoretical elements.

However, according to the article it's possible to generate this stuff with Stable Diffusion models, and Stable Diffusion models have a negligible amount of CSAM in the training set. So short of actually doing the experiment that would seem to settle it.

I think a lot of people don't appreciate just how surprisingly sophisticated the "world model" that these image AIs have learned is. There was a paper a while back where some researchers were trying to analyze how image generators were working internally, and they discovered that if you were to for example ask one to make a picture of a bicycle it will first come up with a depth map of the image before it starts doing anything to the visual output. That shows that the AI has figured out what the three-dimensional form of a bicycle is based entirely on a pile of two-dimensional training images, with no other clues telling it that the third dimension even exists in the first place.

I don't know what specifically Microsoft is planning here, but in the past I've taken screenshots of my settings window and uploaded it to Copilot to ask it for help sorting out a problem. It was very useful for Copilot to be able to "see" what my settings were. Since the article describes a series of screenshots being taken over time it could perhaps be meant to provide context to an AI so that it knows what's been going on.

That just so happens to describe me to a T. I'm a privacy-minded programmer who came here as part of the Reddit exodus. Because I'm a programmer and am aware of how these AIs function, I am not overly concerned about them and appreciate the capabilities they provide to me. I'm aware of the risks and how to manage them.

The comment I was responding to brought up "Linux is better" unprompted. But that's in line with the echo, so I guess that's fine.

Aren't there lots of folks in the comments crowing about how "the embargo is working" and such? If Americans are taking credit for it then it seems quite reasonable to blame them for it.

The GDPR says that information that has been anonymized, for example through statistical analysis, is fine. LLM training is essentially a form of statistical analysis. There's hardly anything in law that is "simple."

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

You don't think LLMs are being trained off of this content too? Nobody needs to bother "announcing a deal" for it, it's being freely broadcast.

You think they don't have the originals archived?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Some are, but they still don't build rockets. I think there's some other factor that's important.

So for example the Soviet Union never had environmental disasters, prison labor and slavery, or its own military-industrial complex?

Obviously bad stuff like that happens. The point is that it's not caused by capitalism, but by more basic and general human nature. The people who think "if only we could get rid of capitalism these bad things wouldn't happen" are being ridiculous.

A couple of months ago the average temperature where I live was well below freezing. Now it's around twenty degrees C.

By this time next year it'll be thousands of degrees!

Pretty sure the big AI corps aren't depending on obsolete second-hand half-burned-out Ethereum mining rigs for their AI training.

There's no need to "torture" cattle to get meat from them. Indeed, meat from animals that are experiencing stressful conditions tastes worse. Not to mention simply having lower productivity. A farm with happy cows is going to be more profitable than one with stressed ones, all else being equal.

Too late, there's a little blood in the water so now everyone hates Microsoft and is pouncing on every drop they think they smell. Being part of an angry mob is fun!

Don't worry, in a couple of weeks or months some other big company or rich person will become the focus and everyone will forget about Microsoft again.

ChatGPT provides false information about people, and OpenAI can’t correct it (noyb.eu)

It’s clear that companies are currently unable to make chatbots like ChatGPT comply with EU law, when processing data about individuals. If a system cannot produce accurate and transparent results, it cannot be used to generate data about individuals. The technology has to follow the legal requirements, not the other way...

It's not the world that would be opting out of the internal combustion engine in this analogy, it would be Europe. There rest of the world would go on industrializing while Europe remains in the 19th century. It would be an insane act of self-destruction.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

It will happen in just under six years.

There was a propellant transfer done during IFT-3's flight between internal tanks, too.

The list's not as big as it seems, several items are very closely related (there's three separate items for "design, build, and test a life support system" for example).

Clicking a checkbox in a settings menu is so complicated, though!

Simpler to install Linux, a whole new operating system, and try to figure out how to either run your Windows apps there or find new equivalent applications to use.

I think it'd be fine to have one-party Democrat rule as a transitional thing. What I expect would happen in the event of a Republican party "total collapse" scenario is that the Democratic party would end up splitting in two in fairly short order. The American electoral system is inherently a two-party system, whenever it strays from that in either direction there are powerful game-theoretic forces pushing it back to that equilibrium.

If we reach the trillions-of-dollars-of-climate-damage state then I'm sure they'll try anyway.

Would be nice if we could have some research into the subject done before then. A pity every time tests are proposed the reaction is "no, that'll only encourage more fossil fuel usage!"

Bonus points if the new Atlas also runs on all fours when it needs to go faster.

Ah, that only happens right after launch when they're still bunched together. Once the satellites get into their final orbit they spread out. The newer models also have anti-reflection systems that make them much harder to spot, SpaceX has been working with astronomers on that.

A naked picture of me simply existing is not equivalent to sexual assault. If you want to make it illegal then treat it as its own thing.
