I use “Focus Plant: Pomodoro timer” on Android, but there is an iPhone version too. It’s free, with ads, but there is a subscription that removes them. I can only speak to how it works on Android, but in addition to blocking other apps (or at least adding a barrier to get to them) it gamifies things by letting you earn “raindrops” for focusing. Those are used to water little plant monsters, which there are a ton of. You can set a specific timer, regular or pomodoro, or just a count up, and it will show you a little icon for other people who are also currently focusing, which is kind of nice. It’s a bit silly, but the added layers of game and very light social aspect add a little that help me personally. It’s very usable with ads if you want to try it without committing money. I personally subscribe because it makes some of the game bits (sort of loot crates) more fun, but that’s definitely optional. (Good grief this sounds like I’m astroturfing for the company. I’m not, I just tried a bunch of other apps too, and this one has a combination of features that helped my dumpster fire of a brain.)

Ditto! I’ve been playing with 8-bit assembly programming and it’s fascinating how this mechanic was implemented in just a couple bytes of level data.

I second all of this. I started using AntennaPod a couple months ago and like it. It handles “chapters” in podcasts better, too. Searching is fiddly though.

I found this on csdb last night, it’s a fun concept! Thanks for sharing here.

Exploring the available CAD software (faulty.equipment)

Hey there! As a 3D printer addict I do a lot of small parts in CAD to print and use around the house. Lately I’ve been exploring all sorts of CAD software since finding out there’s a more around than just Fusion360 and Onshape so I started exploring what’s out there and jotting down my impressions....

FiddlersViridian,
@FiddlersViridian@sh.itjust.works avatar

This looks interesting, thanks for sharing! I’ve played around a bit in Tinkercad (too limited) and Fusion 360 (complicated) but haven’t found something that feels right yet. I bookmarked this to follow what you find!

This looks really interesting, thanks for sharing. Can the “live” aspect be dialed back or paused? I always worry about live wallpaper eating up the battery.

FiddlersViridian,
@FiddlersViridian@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve never seen these before and I like them a lot! Thank you for sharing.

This sounds super cool! Is this a romhack of the 32x cart, that would need to be run from something like an Everdrive, or is it somehow running from the Sega CD, off of a burned disk? It sounds like the former, but I’ve never heard of a 32x cart accessing the Sega CD, just the other way around.

Thank you! I have the full Tower of Power, but don’t have a Genesis Everdrive… this may be the push I need to get one!

Bomb Jack: A Home Port Comparison (lemmy.world)

I feel as if I’ve been hanging out at the arse-end of the 80s a lot recently, comparing ports on computers that had no business running them. I’ve long suspected that if you want to see 8-bit micros at their best, you’re better served hanging around in 1986 rather than 1989. Things were so much more achievable back then…...

FiddlersViridian,
@FiddlersViridian@sh.itjust.works avatar

Thank you for continuing to write these reviews! As a relatively new 8-bit computer fan (I was team IBM PC back in the day) I adore the seeing the pros and cons of each port in each platform. I’ll be firing this up on my C64 later to experience it, and might try to get it going on emulators for the others.

That’s always been my feeling too. I think Mario can run faster, and Luigi can jump a little higher, but Peach just controls better. Who knows what kind of maniac would choose Toad.

Earbud recommendations

I have a pair of Bose Sound sport that I have been using for a few years, and while the audio quality is fine there is an absolute insane amount of wind-noise when using them outside. If there’s anything more that a light breeze, I have to crank the volume to hear my podcasts or music…and forget about using them on the bike!...

Shockz are the best I’ve used, by far. I had a couple different kinds of non bone conducting in the past and the wind noise was always such a problem that I couldn’t use them on windy days, similar to what you mentioned.

If you haven’t tried Shockz lately, you might want to find a running store that carries them and give it another shot. I recently got the OpenRun, and was surprised that they sounded better than the 3 year old “Air by Aftershockz” they replaced. (My dog chewed up the old ones 🫠) The OpenRun Pro are supposed to sound even better, but are not cheap.

I wear glasses too, and it’s mixed. The headphones work better when they are next to your head, so the arms of the glasses are on top. My current glasses slip when I do this and it drives me crazy, but I have an old pair that doesn’t have this problem so I just wear those when I run (the arms bend between my ears a little.) YMMV.

Not sure about the Pro being a Best buy exclusive… Shockz sells them from their site directly. Seems like I’ve seen them at my local running store too, but it’s possible those were just the non-pro.

Linux does exactly what you tell it to, not exactly what you want. There’s a big difference.

13 year user. Reddit communities helped me get through some tough times. I haven’t visited in ages, but R/stopdrinking is one of the reasons I’m able to cosplay as a functional human. Many hobbies and passions were found and expanded there. I mod a small subreddit. I didn’t delete my account, but it went from visiting multiple times a day to now about once a week.

TBH it makes me pretty sad, and feels like a ‘small death’ of something I cared about more than I fully realized. I’m still mourning it in some ways, but am also excited about the ‘old internet’ feel of Lemmy and the fediverse and being part of that ride.

TPU is tricky. Did you tune All The Things for it, separate things PLU settings? Off the top of my head I use 230 nozzle, 40 bed temperature (instead of ~200/60) and the retraction settings are different. I think the base speed had to be tuned too. Even then, my prints don’t turn out as smooth as id prefer. The balance of walls and infill numbers can be a dance.

For me, exercise is critical, specifically running. The combination of physical exertion, repetitive motion, “me time” and getting outside is one of the most helpful things for both ADHD and depression. When I’m not able to run for a few days I feel the difference. There are times I don’t enjoy running, but I almost never regret having gone for a run. This can be hard because depression will tell you it’s so much easier to sit and watch TV or play a game.

I know that not everyone likes running or has the ability or space to do it safely, but long walks, swimming, biking, etc, might be alternatives.

@FiddlersViridian@sh.itjust.works avatar

I sometimes tell myself that I don’t have to go very far, or maybe I just have to walk, but put on my shoes (and headphones and whatever else) and walk out the door. Once I’m out, I usually do want to go. Sometimes I can convince myself that future me will appreciate it if I go, which can be motivation, but that depends on the day. I also find that signing up for a race helps. If I don’t train leading up to it, that day is going to suck much more, and I don’t want that to happen!

I also have dogs and once they get a hint that I might go for one they are very persistent about making sure I take them. 😆

Same. I really want to like 3D VR gaming, but I get nauseous after a few minutes every time.

Is this what the internet felt like? (lemmy.world)

I've been exploring the fediverse and subbing and posting all over the damn place. Realizing lemmy can federate with kbin blew my mind. Not to mention the possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the 90s?

Thank you for articulating what I've been trying to. I had the same knee jerk reaction to the fediverse, but you're exactly right. Yes, it's easier to find things to doomscroll in the corporate "web 2.0" glossy version of the internet, but it's also designed to make us forget that comes with a cost. I'm realizing that so much has become like the blow molded plastic Step 2 brand Cozy Coupe version of what things used to be. There are fewer sharp corners, but the trade off is that it's a simplified, AI curated version of the whole.

I don't exactly know what this is yet, I'm not sure how it's going to evolve, and a lot of it feels very raw... but that's also part of what makes it exciting. It's going to be fun.
