GnomeBrunold,

@kura @mia I prefer mush, and all over the place. Perhaps it transcended brain form, even.

I just learned about the whole "Nixon watergate scandal" since it happened a little before my time but wow..

Does it all remind me of someone.. :donaldtrump:

It feels like something like that is unfolding right now on the other side of the pond :amaze:

    GnomeBrunold,

@stux Among other things, our desperation to keep Capitalism working plays a role. That's very directly what caused Watergate but it's also the specific way in which Republicans want America to be great again. As opposed to a USA of great einvironmental protection, great education, or great health.

I know that unions are the in vogue solution to everything nowadays but I'm extremely confused how a union for indie gamedevs would help with anything given that a large proportion of indie gamedevs are in fact small business owners. I think I need someone to walk me through this because if I threaten to strike I'm only really hurting myself and also potentially the people who work for/with me

EDIT: For clarity people are proposing unionizing to help with the Unity situation and uhhh?

    GnomeBrunold,

@eniko I genuinely don't know: Are screen actors and screen writers employees? My impression was they're not or not in a strict sense but more like sub-contractors.

In any case, you'd identify the people in power and the people oppressed, and the people who're being oppressed would unionise. Hyphinett was going a bit in that direction.

But I don't know why AAA game studios would need indie devs.

Do Bethesda style open world games really even need a main plot and an ending of sorts? I gotta admit, even though I've played Oblivion, Skyrim, and more times than I can even count Morrowind, I've only finished a main quest in any of them once, and it was in Morrowind with a character so fully tricked out that it was trivial to stomp through the main quest to finally see what all the fuss with Dagoth Ur was about

Like. Would it actually detract from the experience at all if they just said "hey, here's a cool sandbox full of quests and places to explore, go nuts" and there wasn't a main quest?

    GnomeBrunold,

@eniko I don't think, they need a main quest, either. But they themselves seem to think it's a core ingredient to their success.

And what the main quest undeniably currently does is set the (new) player on their initial quest. Something like that they would need to keep.

Me: "Starfield is my perfect game"

    The replies:
    "It isn't good"
    "Boring game"
"It is just more Bethesda jank"
    "The writing sucks"
    "Should be on PlayStation too"
    "BG3 is better"

Nothing about what I said about my experience has anything to do with you.

This is the problem with social media now. Sharing excitement about something attracts negative interaction.

    GnomeBrunold,

@broximar Yeah, there are people who - without evidence - hold BG3 up as a beacon for ethical design within the gaming industry.

I haven't played Starfield, yet. But I could see how BG3 is better in terms of perhaps graphics, story, or city design. Even if that's the case they're two very different games. A horse cart doesn't replace a spaceship.

    GnomeBrunold,

@broximar Oh, I haven't played BG3, either. But I was waiting for reviews on that anyways.

    GnomeBrunold,

@broximar My second toot was a supplement to my first toot. I'm not sure you caught both.

Anyways, I tried to agree with you on grounds of people having diverse taste. I'd like to take part in your enthusiasm but can't, yet. And most people who could seem to be busy playing.

As you just want a stupid people to rule over, I'm out. I know dictatorial fantasies.

    GnomeBrunold,

@Radical_EgoCom @flawed Promoting uneducatedness and limiting access to education is a major factor of dictatorships. I don't know about you specifically but I've seen you surround yourself with a couple of them. Talk of "real", "pure" etc. anarchism are signs of that. Just like talk about "true", "pure" etc. humans. Everyone else then isn't "valid", "intelligent". Much of Chomsky's work actually is about this.

Democrats When They Want Your Vote:
    •"Healthcare is a right!"
    •"Climate change is real!"
•"We need to end all wars!"

    Democrats when they have power:
    •Block Medicare for All
    •Expand fossil fuel subsidies
    •Increase the Military budget

VOTING BLUE DOESN'T CHANGE A THING

    GnomeBrunold,

@Radical_EgoCom @benda @SocialistStan @condalmo @moondog548 I know a couple of anarchists who not only vote but also encourage people to vote. They justify it with people having to live somewhere during the transformative period. Some are not against voting at all but chiefly understand anarchism in terms of accountability. They don't understand public vote in fundamental opposition to accountability.

    GnomeBrunold,

@Radical_EgoCom @TomSwirly @SocialistStan @benda @condalmo @moondog548 People want to go back to the feudal system in the UK. How's that "faith in the electoral system"? Who says that? And what anarchists?

"Of all parties I now see only one party- The Anarchist- which respects human life, and loudly insists upon the abolition of capital punishment, prison torture and punishment of man by man altogether." – Peter Kropotkin

    GnomeBrunold,

@SocialistStan @justabit @CatDragon @Radical_EgoCom At this point you're flat out defending the prison system because its criticism usually rests on its ineffectiveness in rehabilitating everyone while it's maintained in all nations. People who go to prison usually don't get rehabilitated, period. Not just if they're serial killers.

The (tragically under-watched) show "Halt and Catch Fire" did a terrific job of conveying that sense of wonder people felt about video games from the mid-80s to the mid-90s.

From text adventures to the single-dev games at Atari, from Mario Bros to DOOM.

Why don't I feel that anymore?

Last night, as I was playing the newest Ratchet & Clank, seeing the world's rich detail and astounding graphics, I wondered: Is it because our imaginations did most of the work back then?

    GnomeBrunold,

@killyourfm A couple of major changes happened inbetween now and then. First is that many games went on and became more and more of a collaborative project in the same way tv series, films, and comics are. Anti-capitalist as well as anti-egalitarian circles lean towards seeing that negatively. But I think there was merit to embracing film as a democratic form of art.
Second, the internet. We're subject to much more criticism as well as information.
