List of circumstances under which you might be able to give a reliable estimate of how long something will take:

  1. You've done exactly that thing before.
gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@xahteiwi and with software that would mean that the code has already been written, therefore there's no work to estimate.

Here's Desire FM, our 40k OCS Amiga intro that was released (and won!) at Gerp last weekend:

@aldroid Thanks! Yeah I love that aspect of this stuff too. Looking at something like Dread and realising that this was technically possible on the A1000 in 1985. Obviously modern tooling is one aspect, but it's cool to think that it's mostly just ideas that hadn't been thought of yet, and new stuff is still being unlocked to this day.

Iโ€™m thinking of installing WinUAE on my windoze mini pc so that I can test the IPF files I made with the weazelโ€ฆ

gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@didier @h0ffman @nivrig You can look into running WinUAE with Wine. It works on my Intel Mac with wine-crossover, but I don't know what the deal is with Apple Silicon.

How do you recognize Atari ST coders wrote something for an Amiga 500? It's full of constant b*tching about not having 8 Mhz... ๐Ÿ˜

Point of No Return, a 40K intro by DHS, Ephidrena and SMFX, Released @ Gerp 2024. Great stuff, btw!

https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=95886

Screenshot from the demo, it says: "Motorola powered engine supports 8 Mhz overdrive", next to a single bitplane textured rotating 3D object.

gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@chainq I found it funny that it still complains when you run it on a 50mhz 060! I mean obviously it would, but it just tickled me ๐Ÿ™‚
This is a truly amazing intro, and it was awesome to meet some of the team at Gerp.

Was there a demo this year that really stood out to you? We'd love to know!
Reply below with your favourites and they could end up in our "Best of 2023" demoshow at Tillage-FX on the 29th!

@Powersaurus Thanks! Each building is just four triangles drawn using painterโ€™s algorithm. There's no perspective on the vertical lines so I only need the four corners and the height. The flat shading values are based on the z distance and the index of the face. I'll put the source code on Github in a bit.

I'm trying to find a word that describes my goal for 2024.
My goal for 2024 is to do the things I need to do to feel happier in myself. Fight against the anxiety I feel about wearing the clothes I like. Work to be more comfortable in myself. Finally get a fucking haircut.

I'd like to find a word for this primarily so I can call 2024, neatly, a "_ year" the same way people talk about a "depth year" or other year theme type ideas

any thoughts?

I've just finished an initial version of a neovim plugin for my 68kcounter tool:
https://github.com/grahambates/68kcounter-nvim

This analyses Motorola 68000 assembly code and annotates it with CPU/DMA cycle and byte counts.

I'd previously released this as a VS Code extension and a standalone tool, and @shi has been working on port to Sublime Text. As part of this I've made some improvements to the core npm package, including stdin support that should make integrations easier.

I'm so fucking tired of the electron = lazy developers or web app = lazy developers take.

Devs don't use electron because they're lazy. devs use electron because it's a pragmatic choice. Maintaining seperate native applications for every different platform is a pain in the ass, working with a framework like QT is hell for maintainence, dealing with weird platform specific bugs, etc (especially if you are dealing with anything media related, ESPECIALLY on mobile)

but also, practically every computer (at least that a piece of commercial software targets) these days has a web browser. Which is going to work the same across platforms, provides every feature you could possibly need, and (for the most part) just works, as long as you know how to use it

Electron isn't laziness. It's pragmatism. If you want it to go away, build better cross platform tooling. You can't just swear at developers until they stop making the choice that makes the most sense given the constraints they work under.

gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@nihilazo 100% agree, but also laziness is one of the three virtues for programmers according to Larry Wall: https://wiki.c2.com/?LazinessImpatienceHubris

There's a five minute love letter of a Megademo delivered to the Assembly Party in the Fantasy Console competition this weekend, featuring work from a bunch of us folks (under TPOLuaM).
There are some really lovely bits in it. Folks excelled!
Showcased: Saturday (12:15- BST, I'm told!)
https://assembly.org/en/events/summer23/program/demoscene-competitions

Featuring: @psenough, @evilpaul_atebit, Jaska, @marqueedesign, Suule, Jobe, Mantratronic, @gasman, @gigabates, (me), Dave84, @ToBach, Jeenio, Decca, @ne7, @ToBach

Almost got FS-UAE compiling as a Universal Binary, which apparently feels like recompiling the entire OS ๐Ÿฅต

If only I could easily hijack homebrewโ€™s recipes and inject extra arch-es in thereโ€ฆ

gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@didier sounds like it's going well then!

gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@didier Sadly not... One option is to have it download additional files on install, but it's more moving parts and Bartman wasn't too keen on this. For smaller cli stuff you can compile to wasm too, but that's obviously not viable here! I did this for vasm and ctools on another extension.

it's commonly shared as a piece of trivia that the welsh word for microwave is a "popty ping" based on the sound it makes

but this makes no sense to me
surely if you named a microwave after the sound it makes it'd be called a BEEP BEEP mmmmmmmmmmmMMmmmmmmmmmMMMMmmmmmmmMMMMMMmmmmmm BEEP BEEP BEEP

aldroid, to random
@aldroid@mastodon.social avatar

okay, so the 600 posts a day thing was a stupendously trash idea, but how about a social network that only updated once a day? you could create a new post at any time, but people wouldn't see it till the network refreshed. that way you could read it in the morning, compose some replies, and wouldn't get sucked in to the doomscroll

wait, that's the postal service. i've invented the postal service

gigabates,
@gigabates@mas.to avatar

@aldroid Yeah that would be pretty ridiculous! What I'm getting at though is that this cooling-off period would be a real positive in avoiding toxicity on the service.
