It's interesting how people are reacting to the OpenAI and Gemini demos on a purely technical achievement level without realizing it.

The audience ooh'd and aah'd when Gemini identified the speaker on the table when asked "what makes sound?"

Indeed, that's very impressive as a technical accomplishment. It's amazing for an AI.

The problem is that Google immediately took the leap to "this will help you in your day-to-day life!" & put it on all our phones.

Bruh I know what a speaker looks like.

GreatBigTable,
@GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

@rodhilton This is what I keep running into... and now I see it on about a third of the websites that I click through to find answers to questions.

In those instances, I skim about a quarter of the way through and then identify that it was definitely written by AI and then have to piece out.

I wish there was some way to certify stuff written by humans. At least them dumb stuff can be attributed to authors I can avoid. AI is everywhere now.

Alright you can add "children" to software on the list of things I know enough about to know that Elon Musk is saying the stupidest shit anyone has ever said on the topic.

GreatBigTable,
@GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

@rodhilton how is this guy taken seriously in any venue?

rodhilton, to random
@rodhilton@mastodon.social avatar

If your children's book doesn't have a prominently featured "illustrated by" credit your book isn't getting bought in this house.

Stop stealing people's labor by obfuscating it through an algorithm designed to break the copyright process. Also, it just absolutely looks like total fucking shit, every time. What is this hot garbo?

Zoom, to me, feels like a relatively simple product. The core functionality of it has gone unchanged for years, and it still seems to provide the exact same level of responsiveness and capability as it always has.

So I'm going to need someone to explain to me exactly why the hell it needs to update itself every few days, usually when I'm late to a meeting. What is in all of these updates?

GreatBigTable,
@GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

@rodhilton I don't know, but I know that skipping them only works for so long before it becomes impossible to connect to meetings with others on different versions. It's annoying.

Good morning 🌅
I added some items of flare to my laptop bag. Need more pins I think. As I am unlikely to put stickers on my new work laptop.

GreatBigTable,
@GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

@popey At a Microsoft conference I went to a few years ago, I sat next to someone whose company encouraged them to put stickers on them. They were an open design office space and non-stickered laptops all looked alike and it was too easy for people to accidentally walk off with them if they weren't visually different.

I sticker my work laptop, but I have to return them completely clean when their time is up. Rubbing alcohol and q-tips usually handle the task just fine.

Literally 2 straight weeks of thinking I must not be sleeping well because I'm so tired during the day that I nod off at my desk.

Realized this morning that the Zrytec I've been taking every morning for spring allergies isn't non-drowsy. I used to take Allegra in the mornings and forgot why.

One year ago, I started a bi-weekly nerdy podcast with a few friends called Linux Matters. The goal was to make a show for our wider circle of Linux nerds who like to hear what we've been up to every couple of weeks. We just released episode 27, where we read and discussed feedback we've received since we last looked in the 'mailbag'. 🧵

@popey This is MUCH appreciated.

GreatBigTable,
@GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

@popey I have dropped listening to most Linux shows out there and was sad to see the Ubuntu Podcast shutter its doors.

Many of the others that I had listened to had turned into long form commercials and didn't have heart in them that I enjoyed before.

Linux Matters is currently the ONLY Linux podcast that I listen to.

@lumpley In bog standard PbtA, is there (or would you put) an upper limit on the maximum number a modifier could be on a roll?

I see that The Warren puts a maximum number on an ability score's modifier (-2 to +2). While Dungeon World puts a max on an ability score from (-3 to +3). Neither says anything about a maximum from rolls however (that I can see).

I did read your blog post PbtA, Part 7, QA Round 1, but the question of additional modifiers to rolls didn't seem to come up.

    [POLL] How do you typically manage multiple application windows on your primary laptop or desktop computer? 💻

    Do you do things differently now, than you used to, or is this always the way you did it? 🤔

    GreatBigTable,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    @popey Many overlapping windows spread across multiple virtual desktops. Multiple monitors make my neck hurt or make my eyes so tired that I get double vision by the end of the workday.

    I prefer to look straight and use keyboard commands (and sometimes the mouse) to switch applications and/or desktops.

    I'm having a problem lately where, when I see a reply in my Home feed, then click on it to see the context, the thread sometimes doesn't include any previous messages. This is intermittent, but it includes cases where I am following the original poster.

    Is anyone else experiencing this?

    GreatBigTable,

    What's the protocol when someone emails you asking you to "give up" the domain you've owned for 25 years because "You're only using it for a blog", and they want to use it for a community they want to build, and they don't want to have "JoinFoo" dot com.

    Do nothing? Explain that other TLDs are available? Tell them to "Jog on?"

    GreatBigTable,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    @popey I had this happen a couple of years ago and I told them that I got the TLD fair and square and I intended to keep it. They were annoyed, but that was the end of it.

    I watch YouTube videos at the lower 360p resolution out of some weird environmental conservation sense. It uses (roughly) 10x less bandwidth and (I assume) 10x less computing power for the server. Most videos I'm just watching at 2x to get some general ideas or info out of, and I don't really need the extra resolution.

    Anyone else?

    GreatBigTable,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    @AlSweigart That's me to a tee. I definitely put them at 360 especially if I am mostly just listening. I only bump it up if they are showing something onscreen that I can't read.

    Also, I've wondered if watching at 2x speed takes less bandwidth as well. Not sure why I think it would, it just seems like it should.

    I honestly can't remember the last time I saw the proletariat as mad about something as they/we are about this Wendy's surge pricing shit.

    Folks are fired up, how hilarious would it be if this is what the textbooks had to write about as the Ferdinand Assassination of the revolution?

    The backlash to this is genuinely so bad that I kinda bet Wendy's will backpedal on the whole thing and eat the $22m they spent developing it.
