One year ago, I started a bi-weekly nerdy podcast with a few friends called Linux Matters. The goal was to make a show for our wider circle of Linux nerds who like to hear what we've been up to every couple of weeks. We just released episode 27, where we read and discussed feedback we've received since we last looked in the 'mailbag'. 🧵
It's a hobby for myself, Mark, and Martin - the three presenters, and a job for Joe - the producer. We (the presenters) never had any illusions of making a career out of the podcast. We fully expect to stay in our very niche and nerdy lane. Joe Rogan’s, we are not, thankfully.
It’s a Linux show with no celebrities, products to shill (ads aside), or strong affiliations with big media companies. We don’t talk about the (depressing, often tribal and negative) tech news like other shows. We do our best to stay positive, upbeat and friendly. We’re not adversarial and don’t click-bait our audience.
We’re very picky about the sponsors we work with, perhaps to our financial detriment. We avoid affiliation with cryptocurrency, Web3, health pills, potions, and other nonsense. We respect our audience too much for that.
We're doing okay, numbers-wise, comfortably within the top 1% of shows if conventional wisdom is to be believed. While having high listener numbers isn’t our primary objective, it makes conversations with prospective sponsors easier. Being able to pay for a domain, episode hosting, bandwidth, and the odd Mexican meal is appealing, too.

@popey If the ad market here in the US is any indication I frankly wouldn’t mess with trying to get ads. When even the largest ad company in the US is slashing jobs and offshoring jobs there is something wrong.
