GrymEdm,

Trump’s followers don’t worry about remembering things factually. They immediately either ignore or romanticize the past as it fits their preformed ideology. That’s why it’s called a “cult” of personality.

GrymEdm,

Americans are faced with arguably the worst choice in their nation’s history this election. Biden is old and willing to make his nation complicit in war crimes. Trump is deranged, xenophobic, and a convicted criminal. It’s insane that those are the two people who have been deemed the best choices for office by American electoral processes. Given how unpopular they are, it’s really hard to call them American “democratic” processes.

In March 2023, the UN Human Rights Council received a report about the over 700,000 Israeli settlers living in illegal settlements on Palestinian land. In the last 10 years covered (2012-2022) Israeli settlers increased by over 1/3rd from 520k to over 700k. The UN investigators were able to confirm 3,372 acts of violence by Israeli settlers during that same period, which averages out to almost daily violence for 10 years.

Displacing and killing/injuring Palestinians is long-term Israeli policy pursued systematically for decades now. Oct. 7th just gave Zionists the excuse to speed up the process.

GrymEdm,

You make sense, and I sort of agree so I won’t downvote and just add my bit. The “prisoners” are definitely being used as negotiation leverage in every discussion with Hamas.

GrymEdm, (edited )

Agreed. Israel is going to the meetings but their proposals amount to “give us back the Israeli hostages, we’ll give you a few hundred of the thousands of Palestinians we’re imprisoning, and then we’ll go back to killing you mmkay?” Even their ceasefire proposals are a) temporary and b) don’t stop the terrible conditions of apartheid/hostile occupation the Palestinians were living in for decades before Oct. 7th.

Netanyahu has made it clear he will keep on killing Palestinians until Hamas is eliminated aka for as long as it serves his purposes. Don’t forget Netanyahu’s administrations are the whole reason Hamas was put in and kept power in the first place.

The revamped Republican Party turns Trump’s lies into a loyalty test (www.washingtonpost.com)

By checking for fealty to the false “stolen” narrative at the outset, Trump’s allies aren’t simply weeding out people who disagree, they’re weeding out people who won’t acquiesce to the Trumpian approach to reality. They’re not just getting rid of people who won’t go along on this one subject; they’re getting...

Dumb and desperate enough to believe the lies, meek enough to go with the flow, or corrupt enough to perpetuate the lies in hopes of wealth and power - 2024’s Republican Party. The conservatives who don’t fit one of those three templates either left long ago or are in the process of leaving following the primaries.

This is anecdotal and local weather does not equal climate, but where I am in Canada (over 600km north of the US border) we had green grass and no snow on the ground all through the Christmas/New Year holiday season. It wasn’t until January that we got nailed with cold and snow and it’s already almost gone again. Unless there’s another prolonged fall in temperatures we will have had like 8-10 weeks of typical continuous winter weather way up here in freaking Canada.

Conservative Christian women in red states are rising up to defend IVF (www.washingtonpost.com)

“They were attacking my faith. It bothered me to the core,” said Sara, a Southern Baptist who identifies as pro-life. “Because I had never viewed [IVF] as wrong, as anything other than beautiful and bringing another life into the world. … I’ve actually had a lot of friends pray for me and encourage me and help me along...

GrymEdm, (edited )

“Because I had never viewed [IVF] as wrong…” is not a justification. I rarely swear, but from the bottom of my heart fuck the people of any religion or political ideology who believe they have some special pipeline to absolute truth. And an extra helping if they believe that gives them the right to legislate their beliefs onto everyone else.

It gets better - the real estate event the protestors were almost certainly there to oppose is said to involve selling West Bank settlement homes (which are illegal under international law). The source for this allegation is this 2-minute video of a Jewish man outing his community at a town meeting for illegal sales of property. For transparency’s sake, I have not been able to independently verify that man’s claims. You can see the events listed here on Home In Israel’s site, both in Teaneck, New Jersey (which the video is about), and another event scheduled for the 7th in Thornhill, Toronto, Ont (where OP’s story comes from). I wonder if we’ll hear about more protests in the other cities.

GrymEdm,

Hey, he wouldn’t be the only Edit: former Republican (found out he’d be forced to run as an independent) seeking re-election while facing criminal charges and looming court dates. And he’s only got 23 charges so it’s not like he’s the worst for number of charges pending this election cycle either.

Well now I’m confused, because there’s a post from today about how Israel is not sending a delegation to Egypt for ceasefire/hostage talks according to CNN. Here’s the direct link to the article, which states:

  • “Israel is not sending a delegation to Cairo for talks on a deal for a ceasefire and release of hostages from Gaza, an Israeli official told CNN Sunday.”
  • “Another diplomatic source played down the prospects of an imminent deal, saying progress was slow and it was unlikely there would be a breakthrough within the next 48 hours.”

A flood of fools and foreign money trying and failing to make an nonviable stock look appealing would be my wager.

GrymEdm,

This is pure speculation, but perhaps it’s not bigger news because it’s economically unpopular to announce how viable clean energy can be? I mean, California is as populated as entire countries. If it’s well known that California can meet most of it’s needs via clean energy, it may raise uncomfortable questions about why it’s not happening in other areas. Questions with economic consequences.

GrymEdm,

Some people want a return to a feudal state of uneducated peasants laboring for pennies from puberty to death. The US already has forced prison labor (aka slave labor) earning 450 million/year in Alabama that mirrors indentured servitude from the Middle Ages. It’s good this got vetoed, but the folks who are trying to eliminate protections for young workers should have to answer some hard questions. Society is supposed to move forward to happier, healthier people.

GrymEdm,

The brain continues developing until around 25, especially the prefrontal cortex. "The development of the prefrontal cortex of the frontal lobe allows us to process the pros and cons of a decision before it is made. “It lets us to do things most animals cannot,” explains Dr. Stanislaus. “Decision making, logical thinking, reasoning — all of those things happen because of the frontal lobe.”

Perhaps Anon also became able to afford/figured out how to sleep, eat, drink alcohol, etc responsibly and small successes built on themselves to better general health.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is an embarrassing wreck of insanity, drama, and poor education and she’s not alone in her club of like-minded fans of chaos and governmental sabotage. I’d be surprised if Republicans implode before the election, but less so than at the start of the year given that Republicans Ken Buck and Mike Gallagher have already resigned in protest. If the legitimately extremist Republicans prove to be more serious than usual about their political brinkmanship then I don’t know what to expect honestly.

Dammit, I don’t even particularly like reality show-style forced drama on TV much less in nation-defining government. “Will government agencies completely shut down because of blocked funding?” “Is a President allowed to do whatever he wants even if it’s criminal for the rest of us? Tune in next week to find out!”

This is just government-enabled witch hunting prompted by political and religious outrage/fear and backed by shoddy verification. It’s also not free - tax money is being spent on what, given the obvious lack of safeguards, is little more than mob justice.

White did not hold back in his reply to Youngs: “It is beyond concerning that the highest legal office in the state of Indiana… vetted nothing, gave me no chance prior to publication to respond, and now you have published your website and we have to ‘prove’ what I submitted to you is true. This is sad and I have no respect for it,” he wrote. Sounds like a reasonable take on this hot mess.

Trump wasn’t “arrested” in the way Navalny was - i.e. poisoned and tossed in a cell to die. Trump is getting trials, and frankly getting a lot more leeway during those trials than the average citizen would. To date every court is erring on the side of leniency when dealing with his behavior. Punishments are only given after he is found guilty of things he actually did, and they are within the previously established guidelines.

The nation is not going to apologize to the MAGA crowd for demanding their cult leader not commit crimes like fraud, sexual assault, and trying to dodge US democracy with an insurrection.
