Harry’s running a 40C degrees fever 🥵 But a new colander is a new colander, and spacemen aren’t really bothered by fever, are they?

anderseknert, to Bash
@anderseknert@hachyderm.io avatar

The only time I reach for scripts these days is when I need to call a few external commands in sequence, often with a few pipes in between them. IMHO there aren’t really that many other use cases left where some more competent scripting language isn’t a better choice. OTOH, why is that (evidently very common) use case still such a chore to do in basically any other language?

@anderseknert Ah! I think we could do this one over beer when you are next in London?

Ianbattersby,
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@anderseknert My position is that without a good reason not to use bash, I don’t know why folks insist on using other (certainly dynamic) languages. I see this the most in a python circles where there are turtles all the way down and mass of accidental complexity. So the python picture was more the illustrate my problem with people unnecessarily not using bash. If you have complexity to be tackled (including testing) use go or rust and capture that in a cli utility 🤷

anderseknert, to typescript
@anderseknert@hachyderm.io avatar

Writing some for a project and… meh. It feels like JavaScript turned Java without the stdlib. I’m sure I’d get better / used to it given some time, but the vibe isn’t there for me. Fast feedback loop > strict typing any day IMHO, but to each their own.

Ianbattersby,
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@anderseknert it’s a sad irony that TypeScript is likely the closest thing to dependently typed and refinement type system that is actually is in production at scale anywhere 😭

kellogh, (edited ) to Minecraft
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

what’s an appropriate age to start letting play ?

Ianbattersby,
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh I don’t think it’s such a binary choice. Would this be Minecraft on their own devices without friends. On their devices with friends you approve. On their devices with anybody they friend. On other servers with/out chat. Cross-network play on other servers. Etc. It’s a minefield 🙈

Ianbattersby,
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh Well, we decided it was the minefield least likely to result in injury. We keep them away from Roblox for sure, and only now experimenting with Lego Fortnite.

My advice would be that Bedrock with a fully locked down Microsoft based account, where you allow them to “friend” those they know IRL.

Ianbattersby,
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh At one point we ran a server that allowed bedrock and Java clients in the same world for family and school friends, but it required enabling cross-network play and the temptation of things like catcraft became too strong for them.

When I see our 11yo make educational videos of how to do things in Minecraft to help their school friends, I’m amazed and happy we get them play under a tightened regime :-)

Ianbattersby,
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh Hmm. Maybe 8/9ish?! The youngest was 6/7 at the time and we allowed them to play together or on their own (local device).

Was brilliant to see their creatively flourish and see how they learnt to build things. That said, it’s a constant battle to judge where the lines should be drawn and when to let it move as they’ve grown older.

Ianbattersby, (edited )
@Ianbattersby@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh Might be wise. The oldest was mad on drawing until Minecraft took over, and now only revisits it occasionally 🙃

After 3 days spent with 2 kids in 58 square meters, I was given a chance to leave the confinement of our home for 2 hours and go shopping for New Year’s Eve. Assuming of course that the kids have recovered by then. If not, we’ll just have a ton of champagne to enjoy at some other occasion. Now to enjoy some spicy duck with pineapple before heading back. Local Thai restaurant is a gem.

Well, I ran Mastodon for 15 days on GCP to see what the costs might entail. Based on a resilient and strong security posture, it's going to be £120-150 per month. That's just absurd. I'm going to try and optimise, but this experiment is going on ice now!
