ImplyingImplications, (edited )

This was tried in court. The response from the judge was “If the man is dead, then he cannot petition the court. If the man is not dead, then his life sentence has not been served.” An excellent exchange of sophistry!

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying “woke”, “critical race theory”, ““grooming””, and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

ImplyingImplications,

It’s really difficult to want everyone to be able to access food, shelter, education, and healthcare and also be hateful.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

ImplyingImplications,

I’ve been a vegetarian for 15 years. People IRL often do get offended if you tell them you don’t eat meat. I try my best to avoid saying it because it often leads to being lectured about proteins. Everyone suddenly becomes a nutritionist when you explain why you don’t eat meat.

80s: corporations send hundreds of tonnes of trash to landfills while people are told to reduce the trash they generate

90s: corporations make everything plastic and disposable while people are told to recycle

00s: corporations cover the atmosphere in greenhouse gasses while people are told to reduce their carbon footprint.

10s: corporations buy politicians while people are told to vote.

ImplyingImplications,

I like how these are always new hip trends.

Gen Z is super into living with lots of roommates!
Gen Z absolutely loves not having children!
Gen Z new craze is having sleep for dinner!

Québec has language laws that prevent businesses from using English in their advertising among other things, and some controversial rulings have come from it. One such ruling was the use of “le week-end”. Québec was punishing businesses who used this term instead of “la fin de semaine”. There was an interview done with an official from the language police where the interviewer had a dictionary from France which showed “le week-end” is proper French. The Québec official said “France doesn’t decide what words are French. We do.”

ImplyingImplications,

Lemmy.ml is a tankie instance that loves China and hates western countries. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the biggest Lemmy instances because it’s run by the main devs of Lemmy (who created Lemmy because they were frequently banned on other sites for bootlicking for China). Thankfully, Lemmy is open source and the nature of how it runs allows everyone to ignore the weird ideologies of the devs.

ImplyingImplications,

The centrists has their basic needs met and isn’t part of a social group that is threatened so they see both as a waste of tax spending.

“No one has any idea” is code for “we know exactly what happened but we don’t want to be sued for malpractice by admiting it”

ImplyingImplications,

In their defence, it is a difficult concept to grasp. My dad started his career shovelling gravel for a few dollars an hour. Now he’s a vice president making very good money. In his mind, anyone can replicate what he did by working hard instead of being lazy and asking for handouts.

I eventually got through to him one day when he was talking about hiring for a senior management position. He was interviewing all these people with fancy degrees and credentials. I asked why not promote one of his hard workers? He laughed and said the person needs to be more than a hard worker to manage multi-million dollar projects. But where would he be now if his old boss had thought the same thing? My dad has none of the credentials of the people he was interviewing. He’d still be shovelling gravel 60 hours a week for minimum wage if nobody gave him the opportunity to advance. How could he think hard work will be rewarded when he doesn’t even reward it himself? That’s when he admitted the world works differently now.

Missing Posts and Comments - Lemmy Issue? (lemmy.ca)

I’ve recently started using the Boost for Lemmy app on my phone and it’s amazing. I was using Liftoff before but I’m switching over. However, I’ve noticed an issue. When I browse through communities using Liftoff I see a lot more posts and comments than when I use Boost....

Why are Black rappers aligning themselves with the right? | Tayo Bero (www.theguardian.com)

Several prominent Black rappers have recently aligned themselves with conservative politicians and media figures, which the author finds concerning. Rappers like Ice Cube, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne have sat down with Tucker Carlson and supported Donald Trump. However, the author argues that right-wing populism threatens Black...

They’re rich. Dave Chapelle said it best. He’s rich first, black second.

ImplyingImplications,

I know I’ve seen some articles on this but I can’t seem to find them again. There were studies done where they asked self identified right wing people to agree or disagree with political statements.

People were very likely to disagree with a statement like “I support universal healthcare”, but very likely to agree with statements like “I support laws which would ensure no taxpayer would enter into medical debt for obtaining necessary medical care”. Essentially, if you just described socialist ideology, without using the common words for it, a large amount of right wing people completely agreed with it.
