Attempting to write a message about "the changes I have checked in".

But instead I wrote "the chances I have checked in".

I will not accept your bets on whether my unconscious is convinced that the code runs as it is supposed to.

Tried to send a message to the IETF's mailing list with some feedback from @feditest. Tried three different sender e-mail addresses. None of them went through. Not sure what else to try.

@jimfenton I'm supposedly joined ... maybe there is a manual approval process beyond the automatic e-mail confirm?

@jimfenton I know, which is why I had some feedback!!

@jimfenton I sent e-mail to support, let's see what they have to say.

The comments system on @theverge_com wants to follow, unfollow, mute and block accounts for me, change my profile, create and delete Tweets and a gazillion other things? If I were to authenticate with Twitter there?

Ahem, no thank you.

Making glazed citron from this recipe and the lemons in the front yard. I’m on the last day, trying to get it to 235deg F. Somehow (heh!) the temperature doesn’t want to rise above 212. I think I made some kind of scientific discovery /s

Duuhhhh … turns out the silly Bluetooth thermometer also has a 212F limit, and doesn’t indicate it!! So I’ve been burning my citron while waiting for it to get hotter!!

We need a better framework for how to think about online relationships between people, and between people and organizations/websites. Logged on/off from a authentication perspective and follow/block from a social media perspective are really not quite right and not at all complete.

We did a bit of work on this when I was on the board of what was still called the Me2B Alliance, and of course there is seminal work by Doc Searls in ProjectVRM, but much remains to be done. The social web needs it!

Compliments to The Guardian for polling scientists recently and publishing their predictions that are so much scarier than the official ones.

But in spite of their coverage, the Guardian has a hard time accepting it themselves. At +2.7°C, they say, 2 billion people will be pushed out of the conditions that allow humanity to live. And at above +3°C, they say we will have “millions of refugees”. Ahem.

Hey @mikedev, because something related came up recently, checking in what exactly you are working on with respect to nomadic identity and Mastodon? Patches? Protocol? ...? Any place I can see something?

A perfect Northern California day today. Sun, quite warm, but not too warm yet, still mostly lush vegetation, and if you could see the mountains, there would still be snow. If you ever think of traveling to , I recommend May.

@Fediverse Test Suite This is looking very promising! In about an hour of work, my WebFinger endpoint is now almost fully "FediTest compliant", with just two wrinkles: percent encoding and an unexpected keyword argument.

I'm not comfortable with rejecting requests just because they fail to percent-encode the @ so my vote is for that test to be relaxed a bit.

Overall I'm impressed with how easy it was to get this running. Switching from the quickstart instructions to testing my own instance just involved copying the "gargron" example test plan and changing a few parameters. It couldn't have been simpler.

I haven't looked at the UBOS stuff yet. That will have to wait for another day.

@fentiger You are the first one to accuse us we are making simple :-) Rest assured, testing bidirectional interactions won't be as simple as WebFinger tests... but then, we sure try!

@J12t@social.coop avatar

Finally I'm getting around to listen to @mike 's Dot.Social episode with @rklambo and @pcottle from #meta, talking about #threads.

Mike asks the most important question first: "why are you [Meta] doing this [Fediverse integration]?"

[cont]

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike: What are the main concerns?

Rachel: fair share of criticism. Trying to approach this as a good citizen.

Pulling the rug out of it now would also impact very negatively the overall story Meta has been trying to build about open source and how they engage with the community.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Shout-out to @mike: he's asking all the good questions about federation and beyond on his dot.social podcast.

Now: do you see federation more broadly as it relates to (other parts of) Meta, like Instagram and other social products you have?

Nor surprisingly, he gets a bit of a non-answer: it's early days, we have a lot to learn, how are people reacting etc.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@pcottle adds that in his view, the fediverse makes more sense for public conversations, as opposed to his example of his own Instagram profile that he has set to private.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Both Rachel and Peter suggest that some moderation functionality could/should become part of the protocol stack. does composable moderation and that is really cool. Peter hopes that may learn from it and evolve in this direction.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Rachel: one of the challenges with the fediverse is: how do you figure out where your content went, and how can I follow that conversation that now exists on multiple different servers?

Wants all replies in the same spot. That helps feel people in control.

This is actually a really good point imho. It's not just confusing that reply trees aren't eventually consistent across the fediverse, but it creates uncertainty because I don't even know what people say in response.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Peter: one of the advantages of is that you can limit exposure to other servers.

is all public, and that's another reason why is a better match for Meta.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Rachel: re monitization, so far we are only focused on giving people a great experience on Threads

Going forward, they want to hear from lots of people and communities and regulators before they figure out what is acceptable and what not.

Peter: quotes a session from @fediforum where business models were discussed.

Mike: there will be many business models.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike: "one of the original sins of the internet is that the relationship between the person and a website was not done at the protocol level. I see the fediverse with the ability to have a direct relationship as a core answer to them treating people with respect."

This is as close as a pitch as I have heard from somebody who hasn't been part of the VRM community! https://cyber.harvard.edu/projectvrm/Main_Page

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Peter is thanking the community working so well together and help debug bugs live!

"We are all on team fediverse!"
