Go easy on Mystery Science Theater if you start with the earliest season (the KTMA episodes). They were riffing live, and while there are a few good jokes and a solid proof of concept, the show got WAY better with a writing team.

We make up stories about ghosts and cryptids specifically because they’re interesting, and even if they’re not true, the stories are fun and engaging. For me, the fact that all of it is made up doesn’t matter. Ghosts aren’t real, but I’m a sucker for a good ghost story.

The fun of fiction is in the telling. We can create entire new worlds with nothing but words and imagination, and invite others to play in (and expand!) those worlds. Nothing uninteresting about that!

For pay-once apps, the Affinity suite is solid. It’s not cheap, but it goes on sale for half off a couple times a year. Their Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign competitors are well thought out, but there is a definite learning curve coming from Adobe. Luckily, they have a series of educational videos to get you going.

One of my tasks at work is creating content - blogs, social media posts, internal communication emails, etc. We are instructed to write everything at a 5th-grade level because that’s where the average American reads. Not the lowest-level American, the average.

I also get to do customer support for people who would not have to contact me if they had actually read the information I wrote for them.

It’s excellent. Return of the Joker is a highlight, but honestly the whole series is consistently good. You can see the whole creative team confident enough to flex a bit and be free to take chances and experiment a bit with great results. Even the not-as-good episodes were better than most of their contemporary TV.

The issue is that any third parties are so weak as to be non-existent. Limited voting helps the right wing more than it does the left, so voting third party only hurts the Dems. There’s a reason the GOP is trying to make it harder to vote.

Sadly, the Republicans are the strongest party - they are unified and fixated on one goal: dismantle the US government and privatise everything for maximum profit. They are all on one message and move as a powerful group. Their organisation (and lack of consistent values) is what keeps them in power.

The Democrats love status quo so when they are in power they don’t want to make sweeping change, however needed. They are also quick to gatekeep within their ranks (ousting Franken, for example, who was exceptionally good against the GOP). There’s a much more varied pool of ideas and goals, so they are unfocussed and weaker because of it. They also have yet to realise the political playing field has changed in the past 50 years.

Independents like the Green Party fail to raise any numbers because they are even more wildly disparate in their goals and ideologies and never show an interest in local politics, where you actually build supporters and show you can be an effective leader. They only turn up for presidential elections and nobody knows who they are. After they lose, they disappear for four years. You can’t build a credible party by starting at the very top.

Ranked choice voting would solve some of this, but that’ll never happen.

TL;DR: the US is boned.

I will say, I frame based on the subject & purpose of the video. Leaving aside platform requirements (TikTok’s vertical-only format), I don’t mind shooting vertical if it’s a 1-person eye-level video, especially if I need to get their whole figure in the shot. More than 1 person and it’s horizontal.

What I seethe with rage at are the idiots who shoot historical events (tsunamis, daring rescues, sporting events or any fast action) vertically and then firehouse the camera back & forth trying to capture the action. Those people should be smacked and their phones taken away.

I started with stick comics. XKCD still draws stick comics. If the story is compelling, people can get invested in your creation. If you want to do action sequences, etc. do 'em with a sense of humour (and stick people) and the right audience will be on board.

In print, you can use all-caps to produce a large, attention-grabbimg headline and reduce the leading (line space) without worrying about font ascenders or descenders interfering.

Democrats have zero passion. They always stuck with status quo, so the only reason to vote for them is because they’re still susceptible to shame and are willing to eat their own to keep a veneer of respectability. Remember in the US there’s a far-right party and a center-right party. The US is dying a very slow, painful death while its population bickers about beer and Barbie.

A “celebration of community” would have lyrics about helping each other, attending local events and supporting local businesses. It would reference knowing people’s names, watching families grow up together, pitching in to help neighbours and being able to relax & feel content.

It shouldn’t contain combative themes, othering, divisive language and threats of violence.

Have to agree. I’m gen X and most of my gen loves 'em. I’ve always personally loved fantasy & science fiction. But both times I tried struggling my way through LotR it was like reading a dry, bland history textbook written my an academic in love with his own navel.

I also love Peter Jackson, but give me Brain Dead over any of the LotR films. They’re pretty, but BORING.
