How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying “woke”, “critical race theory”, ““grooming””, and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

JoBo,

Because there is no mirror image.

@pjwestin has given you a good description of fascist methods. They’re not available to the opponents of fascism because they are not fascists.

Fascism appeals to the worst parts of our nature. It gives permission to those feeling fear, humiliation or shame to lash out in anger and destroy the people that make them feel that way.

You can’t deploy the same tactics to make those people want to be on your side instead. If you try to shame them, they will just hate harder.

You should, of course, expose and ridicule the grifters who lead fascist movements and punching fascists is encouraged. But you need to distinguish between authoritarian leaders and the people they seek to lead.

You should not pander to the billionaire-funded leaderships (take note NYT), but you must not sneer at the people they are trying to lead (take note centrist Dems).

JoBo,

The legal system didn’t deal with it, as per fucking usual. He decided that he would use that fact to prove he was innocent, giving the court an opportunity to explain very carefully why he is quite clearly guilty.

This was a huge political scandal. It’s not reasonable to declare that the media should not have reported it.

JoBo,

for bringing themselves in a situation where this was very likely

The kinds of scenario you are hinting at is very rare.

What you’re saying, in effect, is that women should not go out and get drunk. Which is ridiculous. I’ve probably been out and got drunk over 5,000 times. My lifetime risk of getting raped is around 1 in 4. And you’re telling me that the only way I can reasonably expect not to get blamed for my own rape is spend those many thousands of nights at home alone instead?

Or are youu saying that I should be getting walked home thousands and thousands of times by a man who is 10x more likely to rape me than the stranger you’re imagining /able to distance yourself from.

Or are you saying that unless we’re all teetotal virgins, you’re going to sit on the fucking fence.

You know who is loving your work? The rapists who are hearing you tell them they’re normal. Because the only people who think that all men are rapists are rapists.

STFU

JoBo,

But how does setting his clock back 24 hours mean that 2pm becomes 2am? 12 hours, yes. 24 hours, no?

JoBo,

It’s a click-baity headline. They previously required surgical transition, which results in sterilisation. You couldn’t ‘just’ get a vasectomy or hysterectomy to get legal recognition, you needed new genitals too.

JoBo,

Increases in life expectancy accrue primarily to the better off. Whose longer retirements are being paid for by robbing the poorest of any retirement at all.

Tax the fucking rich.

JoBo,

This is nonsense. The tax-free allowance is massive and they’re only required to pay tax on all the free money, nothing they actually earned.

If there was 100% capital gains tax on all domestic property, we wouldn’t have all that free money pushing up the cost of housing for everyone.

Most homeowners don’t have to pay capital gains on their home when they sell. Thanks to tax legislation from the ’90s, a gain of up to $250,000 for a single tax filer or $500,000 for a couple filing jointly is exempt from tax. That’s providing the sale is of the homeowner’s primary residence and that they meet other requirements such as living in the property for two of the past five years.

JoBo,

Trans women who are using gender-affirming hormones are not “biologically male”. It takes about two years on hormones for their performance to equalise with cis women. The only advantage that remains is greater speed, due to the greater height gained from undergoing a male puberty. There are plenty of tall cis women, especially in sport, so this doesn’t really count as an unfair advantage. And, of course, trans kids who were lucky enough to get puberty blockers in time will fall in the same height range as their chosen gender.

I’m not going to pretend that it’s an easy question. It isn’t, and it’s not unreasonable for cis women athletes to be concerned. But the proportion of athletes who are trans is tiny and the proportion who are champions in their sport is even tinier. I do think that hormonal transition is a pre-requisite (because otherwise they would be “biologically male” with respect to the physical characteristics which matter in sport) but I don’t think anyone should be getting their knickers in a twist beyond that, and they should definitely not be using it as an opportunity to be cruel.

Most of the ‘discourse’ is pure transmisogyny, based on lies and fantasy demons. Most top professional athletes are biologically extraordinary, that’s why they are at the top.

I don’t have much time to hunt out sources but this is a decent thread from my bookmarks.

JoBo,

Reminiscent of the Twitter joke trial. Except this obvious joke was made in private, so there’s even less excuse for the over-reaction. Useless timewasters.

JoBo, (edited )

It’s a community an instance with a rule that if you log in to the website, you have to make a post before you leave (ie log out). The “rule” bit is people indicating that the post is because of the rule, and it caught on. Irritatingly enough.

How would you go about making a rubber dog toy?

I’ve got a bit of a conundrum. I’ve got a 10 pound chihuahua whose entire world is a very specific 1.75 inch diameter rubber ball. (And when I say “entire world”, I’m understating.) She’s gone through a handful of this specific brand and model of rubber ball as old ones have gotten to the point of being too damaged...

JoBo,

This is an awful lot of work for a ball she will most likely reject.

Contact the manufacturer of the good balls and ask them if they know of any retailers who might still have some in stock. Buy up remaining stock.

JoBo,

It’s an interesting question.

Musk was forced to buy Twitter after accidentally promising to do so in legally binding terms. So, to a very great extent, there is no endgame, just the endless flailing of a rich kid who can’t comprehend just how much luck (rather than genius) got him where he is.

But, his supporters are primarily far right authoritarians, and his partners in Twitter include some extremely authoritarian regimes which have an interest in being able to suppress speech (and have had more help to do so with X compared to old Twitter). And his idea of free speech is being able to say whatever he likes without criticism, which means silencing any ideas that could possibly be construed as criticism, whether directed at him or not. The standard far right nonsense. If you point out the existence of racism you’re attacking white people. If you point out the existence of sexism you’re attacking men. If you choose not to advertise on a website promoting far right ideas, you’re attacking him personally.

Is he trying to turn Twitter into a more successful version of Gab or Truth Social, or is that just a by-product of his peculiar psyche? Is it with the intention of influencing elections, or is it just that his particular type of narcissism happens to be very useful to authoritarians? Are the ideas of the far right anything other than extreme narcissism anyway?

He’s not an evil genius but evil clowns can do a lot of damage too.

JoBo,

There was a mini scandal at the Atlanta Olympics because they made the track surface very hard, to suit sprinters and long-jumpers (in the hope of new records, in sports where the US is strong) and it meant that some of the runners who usually do the 5k and the 10k (track) struggled to compete in both events. (The sprinters, of course, were not covering enough distance to care.)

I managed to track down a decent reference for it, which also addresses your question in some detail: The Hard and Soft of It

The Atlanta Olympic Track was built as hard and fast as rules would allow. I know because I circled the thing 49 times in the 1996 Trials before I dropped out of the 10,000-meter finals with one lap to go. Those Games weren’t for me, and the concrete-hard track aggravated a case of plantar fasciitis that kept me from running more than a block for about a month after that.

On the surface, others had better luck: Michael Johnson and his golden slippers set world records later that summer in the 200 and 400; the former endures nearly a decade later. However, after Haile Gebrselassie won the 10,000 meters, he withdrew from the 5,000 meters, complaining of severe blisters on the bottom of his feet caused in part by the hard track.

But comparing trail to road is a bit more complicated. Trails can be pretty hard and also, not as smooth and even as (some) roads, and asphalt is different from concrete. The linked article has some good discussion of different surfaces.

JoBo,

They did identify him. They just didn’t contact her.

Police had known Dexter’s name, and hers, but failed to contact her, instead letting his body go unclaimed for months in the county morgue.

Disgusting behaviour.

JoBo,

This bit does not ring true:

Such a scenario would be to Toyota’s benefit however, as an unrepairable car will still need replacement—potentially with a new car. Repairability is something the automotive industry has directly combated in recent years, with a Toyota-backed industry group sponsoring a scare campaign to (unsuccessfully) undermine a right-to-repair bill. Car companies make their money from selling new cars, not keeping old ones on the road. If cast bodies serve that end better than those stitched together, it’d be no surprise to see them become the industry standard.

Car companies need their cars to hold their value secondhand so that the people who buy their new cars can afford to replace them more often. The right to repair stuff is about forcing people to use their dealerships for repairs.

No idea what Toyota’s plan is for body repairs but destroying their second-hand market is probably not a part of it.

JoBo,

Good move. It’s ridiculous (but entirely inevitable under capitalism) that labour rights aren’t on the school curriculum already. Let’s hope this sticks, and spreads.

Unions could do a lot of good providing syllabus and material support for schools to do this. And it would repay them many times over. The sorts of jobs young people do are typically hard to unionise, because of low wages and transience. Get them young, get them forever.

JoBo,

Because one of the very few people providing content likes those comics?

Post what you want to see.

JoBo,

BNF listing

It doesn’t specifically list pancreatitis (it does list GI discomfort).

Talk to your GP asap. You don’t need a neurologist in the first instance.

JoBo,

His lawyers filed a counterclaim earlier this year, saying his accusers were taking advantage of the movement

Uh, the fuck do they think is about? He’s a serial rapist who has never been charged despite multiple complaints.

Archive link for Europeans who cannot access the article without a VPN.

JoBo,

So the fuck what? You’re dangerous. You need help. But that help comes with measures to protect other people from you. Whatever anyone might think of their tactics, they can’t just do nothing. You’re doing this to yourself. Accept whatever help is on offer to climb out of that miserable, bitter, little hole.

JoBo,

Furthermore, one organization that had ads placed on this content claimed that it wasn’t an X advertiser at all. In a statement provided to CNN, University of Maryland’s associate athletic director told the outlet that Maryland Football hasn’t run a paid ad campaign on X since 2021.

Interesting snippet. It would be very interesting to know how and why that happened.

JoBo,

And possibly also some police obstruction of justice:

Moore [the complainant’s lawyer] said he would ask the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to investigate the police department’s conduct in the case for potential obstruction of justice.

“We are hopeful that the Department of Justice’s involvement will help shed light on this serious matter and ensure that justice is served,” he said.

Moore has previously said he believes police were not thorough in the investigation and questioned why it took almost 10 months for Gregory and Brandon Case to be indicted.

JoBo,

Being bullshit does not mean unprofitable. Most of the financial sector is socially useless, a complete waste of talent as well as effort. But it pays well.

JoBo,

They’re billion dollar products, they absolutely could be made to test them if anyone cared enough to make them produce accurate labelling. If we can do it with food, we can do it with sanitary products. The NHS could do it, if it wanted to. It does plenty of independent trials to check up on how badly Pharma is lying to them this time.

JoBo,

Not just corporations.

There is no reason for a large private rental market to exist. You don’t even have to ban private landlords, just make them compete with the most cost-effective provider: the state. Governments can borrow cheaper than any landlord and rent out indefinitely, turning a surplus (aka profit) at a fraction of private rents.
