Lemmy’s security has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese
This has very little to do with security. There’s inherently “insecure” about posting CSAM, since the accounts and images were likely posted just like any other.
What really needs to happen, is some sort of detection of that kind of content (which would likely require a large change to code) or additional moderation tools.
If your local instance is just you, and you never post on your local instance, you could likely just wipe the local images nightly without any issue. Unless I am mistaken, any missing images would simply be downloaded again, since they all originated from another instance.
Lemmy.world is temporarily disabling open signups and moving to an application-required signup process, due to ongoing issues with malicious bot accounts....
If it’s temporary, likely not. The concern from most of the instances is that open subs mean literally anyone and anything can join, including bots which create account after account, just moving on when the original is banned. “We are closing open signups for now” is non committal, I’m betting the only way things get refederated is if World commits to this change for the long term.
Yeah, the term CP (Child Porn) has always been a terrible name for it. It sounds weird, but “Child Porn” sounds much less dramatic than it is, like some sort of fringe porn. Meanwhile CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) make it a lot more clear that there is a child being abused.
Those were examples, but as pointed out they absolutely do have an effect on climate change.
However, I can provide a couple more direct examples if you like:
No public transit available, and neighborhoods built in such a way that the majority of residents need to travel miles to reach their place of business.
Products being grown, packaged and sold in completely different countries. Driven by profit, meaning many companies make the same ridiculous decisions. Consumers are often given no alternatives for certain products.
I’m usually the one managing merge conflicts, and honestly that’s how I’d prefer it. I’ve had so many instances where my code was bungled because someone didn’t take the time to actually check the conflicts.
Open source inherently means you can compile the code locally, for free. You can’t necessarily redistribute it, depending on the license, but I’m not aware of a “you can compile this source for testing and code changes only but if you use it as your actual copy you are infringing” license.
so today i sat and played warframe and suddenly i get banned from the game, trying to find a reason. the only thing i had done in the game was farming levels and helping another player understand the trading system. I then look in my taskbar and overwolf is running here, so even if overwolf does nothing, that is the only reason...
The vast majority of games out there are fully aware of overwolf, and do not ban for its use. It’s just an overlay, similar to Steam or nvidia overlays.
Though tools within it explicitly meant to give you an advantage absolutely could get you banned.
No offense, but 99.9% of the time someone claims “I wasn’t cheating it was [well known non cheating tool] that’s the only thing it could be” it’s because they cheated.
Are we including things like Epic game freebies, that were paid, went to free, then went back to paid?
And are we including video and audio? Because there is very little out there that is truly free, unless you’re including any services like YouTube and Hulu where you can access their content with the support of ads?
Even if it’s not fake… this is kinda how it is. You’re required to jump through so many hoops to get a transplant. One of the steps is to suppress your immune system, and not taking one of the required vaccines increases the chances of not only your death, but the waste of the organ.
Donald Trump reportedly used a bail bondsman after being arrested at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, paying $20,000 of his bond set at $200,000 and taking out a loan for the rest of it. The fact that the former president resorted to such a measure has sparked questions on social media about the state of his...
Bail is essentially the court saying “give us this money, and when you show up for court you will get that money back.”
A bail bondsmen takes 10% as payment, giving the court the bail money. They will go so far as to hire bounty hunters to hunt you down, making sure you show up to court. When the court gives back the bail, they get to keep both the bail money (obviously) but also the 10% payment.
There’s no loan involved, the bail is more of a hold, and the bond is more of a payment. Trump isn’t paying less, he is literally paying a 10% bond to not have the full bail held. (Though it could be argued that the $180k could be used to make back the $20k but that’s a different discussion.) The bondsman has already received payment, there’s no concern of non payment by Trump.
In a major update towards cross-browser compatibility, Firefox users are set to enjoy the benefits of importing Chrome extensions (note this is really part of the data import/migration from an existing Chrome browser installed, just for extensions that are already supported, and not installing from the Chrome web store), thanks...
I think you’re misunderstanding what this is. This is simply grabbing data from an extension installed on chrome, and putting into the firefox version of the extension. This doesn’t allow chrome extensions to run within Firefox.

If I smashed an egg on my sons head, he would be laughing his ass off. That’s the dynamic we have, it’s all in good fun.
The point a lot of people miss, is that when pranks go too far you need to stop and apologize, and make amends. And for god sakes don’t post the video. 🤦🏻♂️
Lemmy needs proper NSFW tags, I agree. But normally checking the community it’s posted in helps. That said, I‘ve been reporting NSFW content that isn’t marked, and 99% of the time it’s handled right quick.
