Why Libraries are Awesome

So I'm a big advocate of utilizing your local public libraries. The best way to secure more funding for them is to use their services! So I thought real quick that I should write up a quick posts about the services that many libraries offer nowadays that you may not know about. Some of these points may be applicable mostly to...

Kamirose,

No problem! Of course what your library offers will be very specific to your library, but it's definitely worth having multiple library cards so you can use the different services at the different libraries near you. For example, my smaller, local library system doesn't have a makerspace or tool library, but they do have more video views per month on Kanopy than the larger library in the major city nearby, but the larger library does have a very well stocked makerspace.

Kamirose,

Discworld is one of those series that I always meant to try but never quite got around to it. I’ll definitely need to one of these days.

Kamirose,

Thanks! I added those to my TBR. I'm guessing these are all separate standalone stories contained within one world?

Kamirose,

I'm working on getting better at world geography so I play globle daily.

Kamirose,

Very happy to have found this community and to be a part of its growth. Hope it's able to reach its full potential without compromising your vision for it!

10 Books From My English Degree I Wish More People Knew About (Link) (medium.com)

Have you read any of the books listed in this article? How were they? I haven’t read any of these, or even heard of most of them. War With the Newts sounds like it would be an interesting and funny read, and I’ve been meaning to pick up Her Body and Other Parties.

Kamirose,

I've never heard of any of those! I'll definitely have to add a few of those to my TBR.

Kamirose,

I’ve been interested in this game for a while but I’m in a bit of a strange genre spot in that I love delivery games and simulators but lately I don’t want to play anything particularly stressful. I keep adding it to my cart and then removing it, lol.

Kamirose,

I’m an American who was introduced to Eurovision last year, any suggestions of fun songs to look into? I loved the UK’s entry last year, and also loved the goofier songs from Norway and Moldova. And of course Ukraine’s was fire.

And your dress looks amazing!

Kamirose,

When I get home from work I’ll check all these out. Thanks!

Kamirose,

Monday is the one day of the week that I have to go into the office so it starts off with me being exhausted (somehow my sleep schedule got messed up last weekend despite me trying to go to bed at a decent hour) but that improves somewhat over time.

A new roommate moved in last weekend and she’s definitely a lot more outgoing than I am but she seems nice so as long as she pays her rent on time I think we’ll get along fine.

Kamirose,

As awful as Disney is, I’m living for them outmaneuvering and trolling desantis at every turn.

Kamirose,

As an aside, the best way to support your local library is to utilize their services. A lot of them are adapting really well to the digital age too and offer some really cool services as well. I think later today I’ll write something up for the !literature community.

And fuck any politician that screws with libraries for political points. They’re doing huge damage that will last generations.

Kamirose,

I love Libby and Kanopy so much! Also Hoopla but my local libraries don’t have as much on there that interests me. Some libraries also have seed libraries for gardeners, tools to borrow, 3d printers to rent, free passes to local museums, etc! I love them so much. I can’t afford to buy nearly as many books as I want to read every year so they enable my hobby to be affordable and accessible.

Kamirose,

I tend to read ebooks from the library, but when I purchase a book I’ll usually grab it in physical format. Thanks for the tip though, I’ll look into that site!

Kamirose,

In addition to what @Barbarian mentioned about changing the filter and searching, you can link it from your own instance like so:

https://lemmy.ml/c/gaming@beehaw.org

You can also grab the URL to any community or post on another instance, return to your own instance, and paste the URL into the search bar. If you're the first person to ever search for that server it might not find anything at first, but it'll fetch the data and probably work in a couple minutes.

Kamirose,

I still get that stupid “You broke Reddit!” screen all the time.

Kamirose,

Randomizing would cause lots of issues since each instance has different rules and philosophies. It’s a difficult problem to solve.

Kamirose,

On Mastodon I follow hashtags more than individual people.

Kamirose,

Yeah, simpler YA or middle-grade books are great for getting out of a reading slump. Great, easily digestible storylines.

The community in the lemmygrad instance (which apparently used to resolve to the same IP as the flagship lemmy instance) are uyghur-genocide-denialists and pro-russian-invasion.

Kamirose,

Wow, you do all the crafts! Lol

I’ve been replaying The Talos Principle lately. I also recently dug out my Switch again and am playing Spiritfarer and Cozy Grove on there.

Kamirose,

They’re like, the perfect craft for keeping your hands occupied while listening to podcasts.
