It's so here's my favourite photo of my beloved @TimTamCorgi (yes he has his own Mastodon account), being fluffy and adorable.

He is currently shorn like a sheep, and well outliving his life expectancy. He's diabetic and blind, and over 10 years old (which we weren't expecting).

Colour me unsurprised: “Several said that they actively didn’t respond to emails, or acted in an exaggerated disorganised manner. This meant they were assigned fewer tasks, but were also less frequently asked, and thus got away without doing service.”

Today at work, with Hansard as my witness, I referred to the Labor and Liberal parties as the Colesworth of Australian politics.

I also got the word Hammerbarn into Hansard.

My Google Pixel 4a 5G died this afternoon and it won't turn on - I am trying all the rebooting / forced restarting options, but nothing is working so far.

The key lesson I am learning is how dependent I am on everything on my phone - my music is on my phone, audio books are on my phone, is on my phone, entertainment in the form of games are on my phone.

I knew I was dependent, but not just how dependent I was.

The @thoughtworks for April 2024 is worth a read - covers the movement away from licenses (the @osi gets a mention for their stewardship of licenses to date, and flags challenges), the rise of code generation and the impacts on and workflows (AI code generators change workflow patterns), and for creation - we're seeing distinct patterns emerge through .

I've always enjoyed the Tech Radar format - it simplifies the complexity of a fast-changing landscape and makes it tractable for decision makers.

Just found out that if you buy a flat in Scotland it closes in weeks, like a real country, instead of whatever the hell England is doing with my last bit of patience.

@jessie huge congratulations 🎉🎉

@jessie yeah I was very lucky to buy (something very modest) 22 years go. Up north might be cheaper (Geordie blood, biased)

"exchanged emails three times a week for four full months with the tech support of <big tech company> to convince them that there is a bug in their system that they have to fix so that the thing we built that depends on their system works as intended" is not the kind of thing you can announce in product releases, and yet

KathyReid,
@KathyReid@aus.social avatar

@phire I'm so sorry

KathyReid,
@KathyReid@aus.social avatar

@phire it's so hard to get people to understand there's a bug sometimes isn't it - it's like text isn't a rich enough modality to express it. I wonder if we'll be able to do like "metaverse" recording at some point where we can also record our level of frustration - so the person tracking or recording the bug can better empathise.

LAST CHANCE: ONLINE ONLY TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

is large financial outlay, even if our tickets are reasonably priced due to our generous and dedicated organisers.

We now have an Online Only ticket option for just $79, reflecting the additional costs of providing a hybrid , but we hope it makes Everything Open more affordable for more people.

Regular reminder that if your or organisation in or is looking for a home, I run the https://fediverse.au instance for this purpose.

I also wrote this about why universities don't want to run their own :

@shlee See also "we don't have adequate controls and testing on electronic products available in Australia, so we're not actually going to use testing and quality control standards to solve this problem, but we're going to demonise the tool that a small group of people use - just like banning crowbars because they're used by a small number of burglars"

Excellent piece from Grégory Miras on why new tools that change in real time are harmful and problematic - they erase diversity - and make us less able to appreciate and listen to that diversity.

@woowoowoo As an Austraaaaaaaaaaaaalian I must laugh, nah yeah :D

KathyReid,
@KathyReid@aus.social avatar

@jakob @grvsmth strong agree. There's also an implicit Anglo- or US-centrism in this technology - positioning some accents as "distal" and the favoured accent as "proximate" - reinforcing accent privilege.
