There's been some drama around the Mac Iterm2 terminal app. The author released a "major release" with AI features - and strangely got a pile of negativity. Now he's making it a plugin but I don't think he's happy:

https://gitlab.com/gnachman/iterm2/-/issues/11470#note_1917647951

Anyone got suggestions of good alternative mac terminal apps? For folks in "technically incompetent" organisations or who "hate AI"?

A few weeks ago I installed the Glendale aurora alerts app, and naturally it's now going a bit berserk.

Trouble is, I have no idea of any of the scales so it's hard to tell if these alerts are "pretty lights in the sky" or "day of the Triffids prelude" or "imminent apocalypse"...

I've wondered for a while now - is there any research on map routing algorithms that allow for significantly longer routes, which meet other criteria like "more peaceful" or "simpler" or "less pollution"?

The excellent app (based on data) allows for quiet/balanced/fast routes, but "quiet" isn't quite what I want.

For example part of my route from work to Euston could go via the canal around Regent's Park, but that option is never suggested as it is 10min longer:

Suggested 21 minute cycle route from near Paddington to Euston Station mostly along busy roads

Without checking - who actually said "delved too greedily and too deep"?

Is anyone else finding that they are using the word 'delve' more these days?

Relating to a few recent discussions - which of these do you prefer:

CreateMap<Widget, Sprocket>()
 .ForMember(dest => dest.Active,
 opt => opt.MapFrom(src => src.Status == ApplicationConstants.StatusOpen))
 .ForMember(dest => dest.Status, opt => opt.MapFrom(src => src.Status))
// etc

or:

const widgetToSprocket = (widget: Widget): Sprocket => {
 return {
 active: widget.status === applicationConstants.statusOpen,
 status: widget.status,
// etc

Thanks to @RickiTarr for reminding me that it's high time I re-read "Tinker tailor soldier spy"

But I'm fascinated that my brain still pictures Smiley as Alec Guinness - but all the rest of the cast are from the excellent 2011 movie. (That'd be a fun deep fake project - rework the 1979 BBC adaptation with the 2011 actors)

Ok folks - help me with my "it's a pity" list for as my kids grow older:

  • it's a pity they only ever made 3 Indiana Jones movies
  • it's a pity there were only 3 star wars films (plus Rogue One)
  • it's a pity there were only 5 Narnia books (from Lion to Silver Chair + Horse and Boy)
  • it's a pity Game of Thrones only had 6 seasons
  • it's a pity Dune had no sequel
  • it's a pity Peter Jackson never made a Hobbit film
  • it's a pity there were only 2 Alien films

I'm sure there are more.

gah - randomly generated password phrase was rejected because it had the word "villager" in it - and some dumb rule said "no consecutive letters in password".

Despite some unhappiness with the state of Labour, it's so good to see the Tories getting wiped out in the by-elections.

But - it feels like these charts miss a huge factor, the actual voter turnout. It'd be nice to have something like a sankey diagram or something for this?

I guess there's no way to be sure who are new voters and who changed their vote, so it wouldn't be straightforward. But there has to be a better option than this:

Mid Bedfordshire election result chart showing Con dropping from 60% to 23%, Labour going from 21.7 to 34.1, Lib Dem going from 12.6 to 23.1

Random food discovery - "Gentleman's Relish", basically salty anchovy paste. Spread in Vegemite-like quantities on toast, it's very yum. For salt and fish lovers, of course.

Rebuilding my laptop - why on earth does OSX sleep a running laptop even when it is plugged in and running? I know it saves power, but it should be a lot easier to say "no, I'm downloading a huge pile of stuff, don't sleep!"

(I did find the setting to change this but it's quite hidden)

Sometimes, I want to talk about something with other people who are interested in the same thing. Like, I was making some homemade kefir and thought this might be of interest to people who don't see my initial post. Adding enables a broader conversation.

It only works at some scales - if millions of people talk about , in the absence of better client-side filtering it's of low value. If nobody searches for it, it's valueless. But there is a useful area in between.
