The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

Theres also the problem that, even if I suspected it was a scam, I really struggle to do the sensible thing and call my bank - because all my experience with calling large institutions on the phone is long annoying call queues and difficulty getting any help.
My bank is probably better, but I've just been trained to avoid calling any businesses because so many are so bad.

Thanks to @RickiTarr for reminding me that it's high time I re-read "Tinker tailor soldier spy"

But I'm fascinated that my brain still pictures Smiley as Alec Guinness - but all the rest of the cast are from the excellent 2011 movie. (That'd be a fun deep fake project - rework the 1979 BBC adaptation with the 2011 actors)

We have an env.example, a bit in the README - but also we parse the environment with Zod so you get error messages if something doesn't fit the schema.

So the Tory candidate for Mayor of London (a lacklustre Poundshop Theresa May knockoff, the latest in a line of bellowing ignorami CCHQ had sent for the role) may have won, not on any merit of her own, but because the progressive voters who made up Khan’s 20% margin stayed home due to Gaza/TERFism/Starmer’s rightward tilt? I've seen zero actual evidence of a risk to Khan - there are rumours but they seem to be based on the flimsiest of data.

I guess we'll know in the next few hours, but it seems to me his majority might shrink but actually losing is pretty unlikely.

I'm always a bit amused by registration pages for free wifi portals. Nobody is ever going to make every person go through a validation workflow to connect (how would they?) so fake email addresses will always work.

Overall a good day at the conference, but:

  • some fintechs seem to define "autonomous teams" as "only within extremely tight technical constraints"

  • diversity was extremely low (apart from the welcome presence of Fran Bennett as a speaker)

  • when asked what we'll be talking about in 2030, not one panellist mentioned the climate crisis

(Not blaming the organisers for the lack of diversity - it's a problem across fintech especially)

Seems Khan has in the bag, despite lots of rumours of it being at risk.
This seems to be such a common social media thing - lots of people saying he's probably safe, but the handful of people saying he's in danger get a lot more airtime as it's just more interesting.

I'm not sure if it's doomsayers, or misguided hope from people desperate trying to boost hatred.

  • it's the duty of IT folks is to point out the fallibility of complex systems, not just in AI - scandal is a good example.

Since it’s a thing right now:
I am a senior career Linux sysadmin. I’ve been immersed in Linux since 1994, and a nerdy IT nerd longer than that.
I currently run Windows on both my personal and work PCs, by choice.
It’s not a simple choice and it’s definitely not a political choice. I could afford Mac hardware if I chose, and I have been All The Way down the Linux Desktop wormhole on multiple occasions.

It's funny, on joining my new job I chose a Mac over Windows for precisely the same reasons.

Not because either is "better" but because for me, OSX involves less tinkering than Windows; almost all the things I want just work.

Which I suspect is a mostly familiarity - all my windows knowledge is now so dated I have no idea how to do basic things the "right" way any more.

A few weeks ago I installed the Glendale aurora alerts app, and naturally it's now going a bit berserk.

Trouble is, I have no idea of any of the scales so it's hard to tell if these alerts are "pretty lights in the sky" or "day of the Triffids prelude" or "imminent apocalypse"...

There's been some drama around the Mac Iterm2 terminal app. The author released a "major release" with AI features - and strangely got a pile of negativity. Now he's making it a plugin but I don't think he's happy:

I should note that normally I have a lot of sympathy for open source maintainers dealing with grumpy users.
If it has been "I've listened to feedback, I don't agree that this is a huge thing but I can see how opinions differ" that'd be fine.
But insulting users with legitimate concerns? That's a huge nope for me
