Interesting, the place I work at still has runway (apparently), but we’re not close to being profitable, have no clearly defined market fit, and we’re rapidly bleeding long term hires that are getting fed up and quitting. I’m sensing from the unusual silence from the founder that discussions of some sort are happening higher up that we’re not privy to. I’m trying to figure out what the signals match up to.

Lennnny,
@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, as a regular employee. And we do lack transparency, and had layoffs last year. It’s also hard to read the signs as I’m in a totally different timezone and only see them in person a handful of times a year.

Oh, it’s sparkling, and I’ve backed up all my proof of awesomeness to show the next job. I’m finally in a place after 25 years of constant employment where I don’t fear unemployment. We’ve been diligent about building a buffer, and I have solid generalist skills and experience in a very popular tech movement.

We went through an intern phase, and the remaining ones (that are now employees) don’t have the same experience moving between jobs, so my focus is on prepping and guiding them.

Can you elaborate on your stink comment? Do you mean just being someone who was laid off (which I personally don’t have an issue with) or something else?

Lennnny,
@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

I’m pretty direct with him, but I think he’s quite bad at awkward discussions and good at bluffing, so I don’t think I’d get a useful answer if things were going badly.

He’s going after the beryllium agitator, someone stop him.

Squirt is amazing. Not only does it have a humorous name, but it’s delicious ice ice cold. They also now have Squirt Zero, which not only is extra humorous as a name, but also very delicious. We use it as a mixer for cocktails.

This isn’t going to help you now, but get a job where you’re the only US employee and everyone else’s EOD is 11am.

Congratulations! As someone who moved countries and started at the bottom ($6 per hour and 15 hours days) I know the feeling of looking back with disbelief. Sounds like you really earned it!

Also, can people add a quick blurb about these communities so we know what they’re about?

One thing I’ve learned from 25 years of work experience is to never get paid in promises. Sure, they maybe backed up the offer in writing, but six months is a long time for you to make good on a commitment for them to have a ‘restructure’ that somehow prevents them from making good on theirs.

I hope you found something else more awesome since then!

I decided to only work at overseas startups so there’s no chance of a “oopsie we retracted WFH”. I’ll be selling my car this year, I already have the electric bike to replace it.

Lennnny,
@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

I found my job on Reddit somehow, but there are plenty of overseas jobs on LinkedIn and the other major job exchanges. I work in a customer facing role so I look for jobs that need someone to handle customers in X timezones. For example, my company is based in Berlin but they wanted someone to manage the US customers.

NGL the timezone stuff is HARD at first. I am six hours behind almost all of my coworkers so I sometimes get completely excluded from discussions and meetings. I occasionally have to wake up early for things (4am product launch…) and there isn’t the technical help available after noon my time, so I have had to develop my own troubleshooting and coding skills. And of course it can get lonely when there’s no one else about.

But they fly me out to HQ every year and also offsites in Rome, Spain, and Portugal. So it’s an alright tradeoff.

Holy shit I’ve never considered this until now. Survival skills intensify…

So about two hours ago, and this is true, two people came onto my property, uninvited, which is unbelievable, and they tried to take my very powerful, very beautiful gas-powered vehicle. And I said to myself, I said, ‘We’re not going to let that happen.’ My incredible mate, very smart, sees them and calls out to me. I’m where I keep my shoes, very good shoes, by the way, and I see this golf cart, this crazy golf cart, speeding away from the beautiful homes that I, by the way, have done an amazing job in building. I ran, I got my keys – very important, the keys – and I started my vehicle. I chased them, folks, I really did, like nobody has ever chased anyone before.

And they were driving through the neighborhood – which is a fantastic neighborhood, by the way, lots of good people there – and they crashed into the mailbox, which is a disaster, a total disaster. But they ran into the woods, and people couldn’t believe it. They asked me, ‘Did you call the police?’ And I said, ‘No, why would I call the police?’ Because there’s no trade happening, no commerce, it was just about respect, respect for property.

And you know, I don’t need to rely on anyone for security. I’ve got a Second Amendment right, and I’ve got a gun – a very big, very powerful gun that’s loaded and ready, because that’s how you keep safe. And I’m telling you, I’m very smart, very mentally strong, and we’re living in tough times, folks, tough times with desperate people. And I live in Virginia, a beautiful place, Reston, Virginia, with lots of houses, not like the places I used to live, not at all. So we’ve got to be smart, we’ve got to be vigilant, and we’ve got to travel light. That’s what I do, and that’s what we all should do. Thank you.

Yes! We use mission low carb wraps (they seem to crisp up better) and spread tomato puree on top, then season it with garlic salt and Italian herbs, add clumps of grated cheese, and then toppings.

The trick is to preheat the oven to 400 with a cast iron in, and then spray with oil when you take it out ready to cook on (use gloves, it’ll be hot). Carefully transfer the pizza to the hot pan, return to oven, and cook for 10 mins. Depending on the toppings, and if you like it a little more top crispy, switch the oven to broil at the 8 min mark for the last two mins.

My new obsession is a little smidge of grated brussel sprouts (don’t knock it til you try it) with an oil spritz.

Lennnny,
@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah most pizzas run 300-400 cals a slice. If I really try to go easy on the cheese I can make a tortilla pizza for 500 cals.

I also make a wicked delicious lasagna without pasta sheets (sub for zucchini and kale layers). We designed it to fit our keto macros and I’ve kept it on rotation even though we’re only moderate low carb now.

I absolutely love feeling sleepy. There’s nothing better than the dark quiet night in my cosy warm bed, with my brain feeling light and my eyelids feeling heavy. I edge that shit for as long as I can.

So sorry, I forgot to reply.

Pho

Ingredients
MEAT:
  • 1 packet of oxtail
  • 1/2 packet of tendon
  • 1 packet of flank (add this when plating up)
  • 1 packet of vietnamese meatballs (these cook separately to the other meat)
    CHARRED VEG
  • 1 root of ginger (around 3 inches long), unpeeled, cut in half lengthways
  • 1 onion, skinned and cut in half
    FLAVORS
  • 10 pieces of star anise (aniseed)
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 clump of rock sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of fish sauce
  • MSG (? amount)
    TOPPINGS
  • Fresh Cilatro
  • Culantro (sawtooth, big leafy shit)
  • Basil
  • Green onion
  • Lime
  • Sliced onions
  • Bean sprouts
  • Hoisin Sauce
  • Sriracha
    OTHER
  • Rice Noodles

Bring a big pot of water to the boil and drop the meat (except the meatballs and flank) into the boiling water. Furiously boil for 10 minutes. Drain and wash the meat under the tap.

Turn on the broiler, put the ginger and onion in, cut side up, until nicely charred.

Fill the instant pot to 1 inch below full line (12 cups/3 quarts or a little more). Add the washed meat (not the meatballs, not the flank) to the water and adjust water if overfilled. Then add the charred veg and the flavor ingredients.

Lid on, pressure cook button and set to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Prep toppings. Add the noodles to cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes. Let the pressure cooker depressurize naturally when done. During this time, prepare a pot of boiling water for the meatballs and noodles.

Once the Instant Pot beeps finished, boil the meatballs in water for 10 minutes. When these are done, remove, and leave the water boiling ready for the noodles. When ready to serve, dip the noodles in the boiling water for 1-2 minutes and remove immediately.

Open Instant Pot and remove meat to cut and plate. Strain the broth. If you have time, strain it a second time through a piece of kitchen towel to remove extra impurities. Return broth pot to Instant Pot and turn to low saute - taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Plate up the food, starting with noodles, then meat, flank, broth, then toppings and sauce. Get slurpy.
