Did a Micro Center. Did not buy anything.

This is representative of 9/10 of my Micro Center visits.

@lupomancer You might want to try again. Early on, the PHP memory limit was too low which was causing some uploads to fail. Might work better now since I gave it 10x the RAM.

A big thanks to @mithmeoi for our new banner! A few Tiggi.es users may have made their way onto it... :)

Please boost - Love sharing amazing art by folks in our community. Maybe even more because my friends/users are in it. ;)

Had a client tell my boss yesterday that I need to dress “more professionally” when in their office. It reignited how much I hate being told to “dress different” because that’s almost always a poor mask for saying “dress more normal” => “dress less queer”.

I was dressed well in clean, well kept clothes. This person, who is our main contact at the company, gave me the up-and-down look when I showed up wearing a nice hoodie and shorts and my bomber jacket.

When someone has issues with clothes that just don’t look the way they want, I can and will assume it’s always rooted in classism or not wanting queer looking people in their office space. What makes what I’m wearing inherently less professional than what you’re wearing? Old dress standards rooted in generations’ old desire to not look like the blue collar professionals that you employ? Fuck you, take a hike. I dress how I dress and you’re not gonna change that.

Pretty pissed at my manager for not standing up for me too.

@lupomancer I had a fox who worked on my team ask me if it was okay to dye a purple stripe in his hair.

I told him if it makes him happy, it’s none of my business. He said he wanted to make sure, because some might think it’s “unprofessional.”

No, unprofessional is treating someone poorly because their appearance doesn’t suit someone. It’s one thing if their behavior is off/they’re disrespectful or have really bad hygiene. But entirely another if they’re comfortable in their skin and someone is uncomfortable with that.

It’s IT. It’s not a 3 star Michelin Restaurant or the Supreme Court.

@lupomancer I'm a big fan of being called the oppressor because I'm telling people that they're supporting a fascist by remaining on his platform.

"You want us to leave our communities of support! We're going to stay there and fight Musk!"

Oh, fight him in his own living room, huh?

"Yeah! We're going to outlast him!"

Uh, there will be nothing to outlast when he's done.

"Stop oppressing me! I'm going to post this to Xitter!"

And so it goes.

It's kinda mesmerizing watching the core speeds on one of the i7-12700Ts in the Cluster (the one that runs Tiggi.es presently) dynamically shift cores anywhere from 1400Mhz to 4.62GHz quickly, and on an as-needed basis. The low base speed saves energy, but it'll instantly pop cores up to speeds within its thermal/power limit envelope, so for lightly-threaded workloads, it can perform as well as beefier chips.

Screen grab of "watch -n0 "grep Hz /proc/cpuinfo" off of a Proxmox node. 20 logical CPU cores with a base of 1400MHz flickering up to as high as 4.62GHz per core as processes require it.

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@stooovie Not really seeing that...the GIF is from my Proxmox system dynamically controlling per-core CPU frequencies.

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@stooovie BIOS settings can override this as well. Lots of consumer motherboards specifically ignore Intel's power management/limits if you select their "optimized" or "auto" modes for clock speeds/voltage, etc. These are HP Workstations that don't have those options, though you can bypass some of them/change them at runtime by using powercap-utils.

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@stooovie I didn't do anything special with my install...it defaulted to this behavior. Strange.

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@mario @stooovie I've looked at this setting and have tried changing it.

On Comet Lake and later, I'm seeing powersave disabling turbo boost and limiting cores to the base frequency while allowing cores to go even lower than base frequency before returning to it. Performance mode runs the cores at base frequency and permits them to turbo boost before returning to base frequency.

Given this behavior, and the low power nature of these systems (and the fact I've got solar panels generating an average of 50-60kW daily), I'll be leaving the systems on Performance Mode.

If I wanted to control turbo boosting, I'd just use powercap-utils and set the short-term power limit down, so the CPU uses less power when demand is there, but this will also impact performance negatively in high utilization bursty scenarios.

Instead of doing that, since I value performance over saving a few watts, I'm going to set my long-term power limits (thus TDP) up from 65w to 85w as the CPU cooler can handle it based on XTU testing, and short term will actually be lowered from 135w to 125w, but the window extended to ~57 seconds to enable larger workloads to complete more rapidly.

I can see Powersave making sense where Proxmox is being used locally with sipping power taking precedence over performance...but I bought these CPUs to perform, so I'm gonna help them do just that. ;)

Successfully migrated home network to tagged vlan with only minor inconvenience when I forgot that my dns had the old gateway hardcoded. 10gb between cluster NAS & desktop. ready If Comcast ever offers docs is 4.0 (which I am not expecting in my natural lifespan).

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@CmdrTaco What’re you running for your cluster config?

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@CmdrTaco Big servers? Xeons? Desktops? :)

Here’s the Proxmox cluster Tiggi.es resides in. I7-12700ts with 64GB and Intel Enterprise SSDs in a replica cluster with 2.5Gbit back end network. It’s cute. :)

Then there’s the ProLiant ML110Gen10 with SAS array and LTO6 Autoloader.

I used to work in HP’s enterprise storage division and I’m still a bit of a server/cluster/homelab geek. Would love to see your setup. :)

@CmdrTaco Those N100s are getting popular. How do you like it?

I started out with one HP Elite 800 Mini Gen9 for a little proxmox learning. Then I virtualized other bare metal systems I had. Then I built a cluster. Then I went crazy. :P

I have a proxmox cluster in my basement with 40 or so cores and it has enough compute to probably host all of slashdot at its peak.. not enough bandwidth of course…

LeoBurr,
@LeoBurr@tiggi.es avatar

@CmdrTaco How much bandwidth did it use in its prime? I’ve got 5gbit symmetrical with a /25… you have me curious. :)

Don’t say “unemployed.”

Say “temporarily retired.”

Unemployed: Connotes slavery to capitalism, that you are lesser because you’re not working. That “employment” is a key defining value of you as a person.

Temporarily Retired: You’ve had enough shit for a while. You now have some control. Taking time for self care by going to sleep at 3 and waking up at noon. You’re looking for work, but your last stint made you realize that, while yes, money necessary, you are worth more than your job or your title. And you deserve to try to find ways to enjoy your newly found down time, as stressful as it may be. You’ve shrugged off the chains of capitalism, if just for a fleeting moment. And you’re off to do better things. Later.

The new Masto exploit is pretty bad. Please be sure to get your admin to update ASAP. In a nutshell, it allows remote impersonation/account takeover of any user not on a patched system.

No reports of it that I've seen in the wild, but it won't likely be long.
