I used to really suggest Tidal frequently because they were better for artists than Spotify, if you were into the streaming thing.

Unfortunately, as of today they've retired their Roku app, adding that to their graveyard of supported platforms (along with my digital audio player, my living room hifi streamer, and my tablet)

So I'm left with just my phone (since if I could use the web client, I'd already have access to my media).

Guess I'm done with them.

This just underscores the point people like @pluralistic are constantly making - enshittification is an active process.

Even paying a platform every month isn't enough.

Own your media. There's literally no other choice.

@jackwilliambell Same, I love buying physical and digital releases from artists, because having been an artist much of my life, I know how much those little emails mean.

I remember when the only way you could fill a tank to get to the next show was to move enough CDs and cassettes and stickers at the current show.

@andycarolan IMO, a computer has 1 purpose: making things easier.
When Apple chose to make basic media interop harder to the point that I couldn't view photos from my camera on their tablet, but could on a cheaper Android tablet... I was like "Ok, time to leave"

When compared to the absolute focus Apple used to be known for, it's really a bit sad. Jobs had really just 2 talents - laser-like focus and the ability to convince people he was right :D

@andycarolan The first gens of iPod, IMO, stand as some of the best things to ever come from apple.

It's like someone said "What if we made the very best portable music experience currently possible. Full stop."

Tech has changed, times have changed, but that device was always so perfectly suited to do one thing better than anything else at the time.

@andycarolan Sorta off-topic, but I used my ipod classic (the huge black one) as a portable linux desktop (for consulting) and a music player.
It literally spanned my professional and home life for ages.

Beautiful piece of kit. Dang shame they decided to wander off in favor of "do everything meh" tech instead.

@andycarolan I couldn't say, since I own a dedicated player (an AK70), and consider it fairly indispensible.
For one thing, the output level is high enough that I don't have to turn my car stereo up to nearly max, for another, it has lovely physical next/play/prev buttons that I can touch while driving with out looking.

This right here is why I consider Ubuntu the "microsoft of Linux"
Ubuntu is a terrible excuse for a server OS, and ads have no place in tools like apt. Literally taking an upstream tool from Debian and adding ads to it.

In light of the Creative Commons deciding that AI scraping/training is "fair use" I think I'm going to just repost @Jess_Alter's post on this:

Especially when you look at the fields of writing and art being clearcut right now by AI-wielding corps.

Rather than having our back, Creative Commons is siding with the likes of Disney, Meta, and Google.

@RL_Dane @phf I was thinking more "BBS to BBS network" myself. Basically only allowing trusted systems to talk to other trusted systems and deliberately excluding the vast majority of people with minimal barriers.
