๐Ÿšจ The Board of Supervisors resolution formalizing San Franciscoโ€™s Vision Zero goal โ€” of zero roadway fatalities โ€œby 2024โ€ โ€” used only โ€œby 2024โ€ and โ€œin the next 10 years,โ€ when adopted in March 2014.

As such, as of January 1, 2024, San Francisco will have failed on Vision Zero.

A week after a family of four was killed by a person crashing their car into a bus stop, another person crashed their car into a bus stop.

Mayor Breed must take immediate action to transform our streets โ€” using physical infrastructure โ€” to help more people shift trips away from cars.

Two people were killed in West Portal near the intersection of West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street โ€” an intersection with multiple Muni bus and train stops โ€” and SFMTA should close the intersection to car traffic while it studies improvements.

โ€œโ€˜It comes across as well-intentioned, but this is a classic delay tactic by people who oppose improvements,โ€™ said Luke Bornheimer, an advocate who pushed for the [improvements]. He now fears the idea will be shipwrecked on the rocks of committee meetings and community feedback.โ€

Protected bike lanes, transit-only lanes, and car-free streets help people shift trips away from cars, reducing car traffic and demand for parking, among other benefits (e.g. roadway safety, climate action).

We need leaders who prioritize data-proven solutions to these problems.

Yesterday, SFMTA gave an update on the Cityโ€™s goal for zero roadway deaths by 2024 (Vision Zero).

SFMTA, the City, and Mayor Breed are failing to reduce roadway deaths because they arenโ€™t doing enough to get people to shift trips from cars to active transpiration (e.g. bikes) ๐Ÿงต

On Tuesday, a 4-year-old was killed on the streets on San Francisco. Tragic and preventable deaths like this happen across our city due to dangerous street design.

Today, Iโ€™m calling for immediate improvements to made and citywide policies to be approved๐Ÿงตhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vTJvXNKUNvAKIMjbEDPWCzaAH8BuRz5WXqkkyITROg0N4goRzjBmmRQNgLZEtjV6lzx6QUv0ZFjA_KJ/pub

The current mayor of San Francisco is driven 1 mile downhill in a 3-ton, 7-passenger, $100,000+ SUV during a roadway safety crisis and climate crisis.

We need a mayor who leads by walking, biking, or taking public transit.

Will the next mayor walk, bike, or take public transit?

A person walking was killed in a car crash at Ellis and Jones Streets on Thursday.

Ellis and Jones are both four-lane, one-way streets with relatively narrow sidewalks and without protected bikeways.

SFMTA should install protected bikeways on both of these streets immediately.

On Wednesday, a man was killed on Valencia Street, with the center bikeway being a contributing factor.

Today, SFMTA installed a piece of plastic and a โ€˜yield to people walkingโ€™ sign as a solution.
